I'm doing a project that includes upscaling, so the initial de-interlacing is critical.

So, why can I select the de-interlace method (off, blend, interpolate) in the project properties, but not in the render settings?

And why don't the project properties settings necessarily work in the render settings?

One of my sources (a tradeshow event) has three types of content: a 2-d animation that was 30p, a pre-edited video with lots of fast moves that was 60i, and the live 60i footage from the event.

I rendered the 30p (in 60i) to 30p with de-interlace as NONE, and it's perfect. (I still need to double the frames to get to 60p.)

I rendered the live stuff to 60p with de-interlace as BLEND, and it's great. The motion is small, so movement looks like motion blur. There is almost no comb-tooth tearing.

However, the fast motion 60i with de-interlace set as INTERPOLATE doesn't render properly. I set the project to 60p, and it looks great as I go frame by frame. Each field is self contained, so I get no motion ghosts. But when I render, I get a different result. I get motion ghosts at about 25% or 33%.

If the render dialog included the de-interlace selection, I would feel like I have more control. For what ever reason, the render and the project properties don't seem to agree.

Any suggestions?

Did you check the frame rate of the render? Perfect 30 or 60p causes motion ghosts from drop frame material. Set it to 59.94fps and that might resolve it.

I should have been clear: I'm using 29.97fps and 59.94fps.

I just wish there was a way to control the de-interlacing precisely during the render process - regardless of the project settings.

I ended up using After Effects to handle all of my conversions.
