Peter Manojlovic February 8th, 2009, 05:46 PM If you still have problems, i've got an Aiwa MX100 digital system converter.... Playback and output to any variety possible.....At the $400 i paid for it, i'm easily looking at around 2050 to break even on this unit...>_< If you run into any snags, PM me... On a side note, if you've got a larger Indian/Pakistani community in your area, chances are that there's a movie section in one of the local shops, that does these transfers dirt cheap... Good luck!!! Ryan Kincaid February 8th, 2009, 08:13 PM I'm in the process of putting together a team for an independent film that I wrote and currently producing and directing. This is all straight out of pocket (my own pocket) and will be low budget but hoping on getting a great DP to work with and make this project look like Hollywood quality. I'm also hoping that this will turn into a longer relationship post film because I have another project I'd like to work on afterwords. Notes about the project: Prefer someone that knows how to use Panasonic DVX-100, a/b, and also has their own (not mandatory but would help) This is looking like it will be a 20-25 day shoot so will have to coordinate with those that can take time off from day job. I can't afford a professional or someone that has tons of credit and requires $1000 a day. I can only do a flat rate for the entire project. Willing to neg. fee and a possiblity to up-credit/give multiple credits. Would like samples of work. Please contact for further information. ryanmkincaid@hotmail.com Alex Brown February 9th, 2009, 04:03 PM Alex Brown - demo reel (http://basementvision.com/demoreel.html) First link didnt work. Must have own rig or access to one. Work will begin immediately. Colorists must have access to and be able to work in Apple ‘Color’ on our existing FCP project. Thanks Nicole www.myspace.com/misscc803 Jim Montgomery February 16th, 2009, 10:18 AM James As the title suggests I would love to be considered for this position if we could arrange for me to perform the work required at my own studio. I would need to see some footage and what your requirements would be. If you had a look you are going after that would also be useful to know. What is your current plan for this movie, Festivals, DVD release, or theatrical and your budget and time frame as well. Thanks Jim Montgomery Charles Papert February 16th, 2009, 12:01 PM Hi: We've just had someone drop out of a shoot in LA tonight (Monday) and Tuesday. We are shooting 4:30 pm to midnight at a house in the Hollywood Hills. It's a labor-of-love short film that some friends of mine are making and I offered to DP this portion for them, it should be a nice shoot without any drama (not the wrong kind, anyway). We have the gear already--two wireless, a 416 and pole and intend to record straight to two EX3's although if someone came with a mixer, all the better. Simple dialogue scene for the most part. If it helps at all, the couple making the film are established actors--Ashley Jensen is best known for playing Maggie, the female lead in the HBO series "Extras" as well as being on "Ugly Betty". thanks... Nicole Hankerson February 16th, 2009, 02:27 PM If I were close by I would help you out man. Good luck with everything. Josh Mellicker February 16th, 2009, 04:35 PM We need several top-notch shooters to shoot some HD1080i footage for an instructional video project. We don't need much, but this is not a low-budget project, and we need excellent looking footage of very specific content. Most of the footage involves shooting scenes with family and kids, including: - a school play or recital - birthday party - soccer or other kids' sporting event - fun at the beach - fun in the snow (skiing or snowboarding) - other similar family events Since our timeline is a little tight (we need the footage by the week of March 2 - 6), the shooters we're seeking need to either: 1. have kids (or nieces, nephews or neighbors) that will be participating in events similar to the above in the next few weeks or 2. be able to help find us a location where one of the above events will be taking place. We can pay a $100 - $200 location fee on top of the shooter's fee. We need footage that looks great, but shot with camera and tripod only (no professional lights or gear- natural light and practicals only). So the locations need to be naturally photogenic (as well as the kids themselves :-) Once you respond, we will provide you with a detailed shotlist. We will only need a few minutes of usable footage, so if you shoot 10 - 15 minutes we'll have plenty to choose from. We will need model releases from all people (or parents of kids) whose face is recognizable in the video. If you are interested, please email shooterswanted@gmail.com with the following info: - a little info about the event you have the opportunity to shoot - the date you would be able to get the footage to us - how much you would charge - link to a demo reel of your camerawork - it would be really great if you could take a couple photos of the location and attach them to the email Thanks! p.s. Even if you are not a professional camera operator, if you have a family event coming up in the next few weeks, and are willing to allow a professional cameraperson to videotape the event, we will offer a $100 - $200 location fee. (You will also receive a copy of the footage if you'd like.) Alan Certeza February 17th, 2009, 10:09 AM I'm posting this to see if anyone here from Seattle,Wa is looking for extra help even if it may be to carry around, load and unload and help set-up. I'm still learning and some field work would be really nice. So send me a PM if anyone here from Seattle,Wa needs a helping hand! Kevin Shahinian February 17th, 2009, 12:15 PM Short film/concept production shooting in Sweden (Uppsala) late March/early April '09 - need helping hands!! Preferrably HDV shooters (Canon) with DoF adapter knowledge, but anyone in the area who is interested in helping out, logistical support etc would be great. Could also use a behind-the-scenes shooter. Sweden shooters - Let me know! Would love your insight into shooting Uppsala (Cathedral, University, Slott, etc, rules, laws) - even if you can't help on site. Thanks!! Kevin kevin@pacificpictures.net Takashi Doscher February 17th, 2009, 04:04 PM Hey guys, I am not sure if this is appropriate for the forum, but I could really use your help. For the past 7 months, I have been shooting a documentary on an extraordinary young man named Kyle Maynard. He was born without arms or legs and grew up to become a champion highschool wrestler and is now fighting in his first Mixed Martial Arts Fight. He will be fighting the night of April 24th, in Auburn, Alabama and I really need more camera operators so we can get adequate coverage for the event. We are a very very low budget production, but we can work out any compensation and credit needed. The film has been shot with a Canon XHA1 in 24f (HDV), and for postproduction workflow I would love to try to stick with this family. So if you own or have access to a XLH1, XHG1, or XHA1, and live in Atlanta, Birmingham, Macon, Columbus, or Auburn and are willing to travel, I would love to hear from you. I hope that you feel, as I do, that this could be a unique and rewarding experience to contribute to a story about the unlikeliest of heroes living his dream. Here are two clips that we have put together: This is a password protected video on Vimeo (http://www.vimeo.com/1462466) password: lawrenceville This is a password protected video on Vimeo (http://www.vimeo.com/2605436) password: redpill Please contact me at dockyardllc@gmail.com Thank you very much! Takashi Kevin Shahinian February 17th, 2009, 05:05 PM Actually looks like it will be mid March... Kevin Lewis February 17th, 2009, 09:19 PM I am familer with Kyle's story. I am a MMA fan and have been so for over 10 years. Kyle seems to be an extraordinary individual. I've seen footage of him grappling but had no idea he was getting into mixed martial arts. Good luck with your documentary, i'm sure it will turn out great! David W. Jones February 18th, 2009, 07:57 AM I would recommend having a couple of the cameras shoot 60i so you can get a good clean slo-mo shot or two to interject into the 24f edit. Good Luck with your project! Joel Peregrine February 18th, 2009, 11:48 AM Send me a PM if you're available June 27, '09 and shoot in the Columbus area. Kevin Lewis February 19th, 2009, 11:28 AM Very professional looking, well done. Dana Salsbury February 19th, 2009, 11:28 PM We are a wedding videography company looking for a forth person with camera for occasional weekend work -- usually six hours. We will do the editing, we just want to find a shooter with a steady hand. We use HMC150s, so we need a Panasonic shooter compatible with the 150's SDHC setup. Please PM your name, shooting cam, experience, and what you would charge (either hourly or for the 6-8hr day, however you like to do it). Please also indicate if you have a tripod, shotgun mic, light (kind) and batteries. (We like to know what we would need to provide). Kevin Shahinian February 20th, 2009, 03:16 PM March 7 - March 14. Thanks guys!! Phil Gosselin February 21st, 2009, 02:30 PM Hi all, I just would like to touch base with production teams for these specific areas. I am developing a relationship with a client which is more base in Montreal and Toronto but there will be a need to shoot in these two cities from time to time. Interested? Please contact me trough my website. http://www.production24fps.com/index.php?lang=en Thanks Philippe Martin Ahm February 21st, 2009, 03:51 PM Hi all, Pro composer / music producer looking for new cool projects. web site: Ahmatron - Music + Sound (http://www.ahmatron.com) I've been working on computergames, movies, commercials, foley, corporate movies...motion graphics etc... Also I have a rather large library (70+) with all kinds of genres. thanks, martin Alain Lumina February 21st, 2009, 08:24 PM Really fun songs!! How much do you want to use them in a no-budget feature? (Making it myself with friends, my HD camera.) If you've seen the content that Josh and DVCreators puts out, you'll know that they mean business. Plus, many productions that have the budget, prefer not to go the stock route so that they can get exactly what they want in terms of shots and locales. regards, -gb- Josh Mellicker February 23rd, 2009, 03:28 PM Stock footage is not an option for a lot of the shots because we have a very specific shotlist that would be extremely unlikely to find as stock. Aanarav Sareen February 23rd, 2009, 04:39 PM We need a DP in Las Vegas from March 18th to the 20th. The DP must have his/her own equipment. The event is the MIX conference. They have been around for a while, I just had never heard of them. There are just so many video companies around. Blake Cavett February 25th, 2009, 10:48 AM A close friend of my mother in law needs some footage on 16mm put to a DVD. Can anyone help? jck_dmc12@yahoo.com Philip Gioja February 25th, 2009, 12:04 PM You can try homemoviedepot.com. They do that type of thing. Lori Starfelt February 25th, 2009, 02:29 PM My grandfather was a professional photographer, and we have wonderful 16mm home movies. Some of them are just gloriously beautiful. Yale did a superb and speedy job for us. They are, however, "christian" and will not work on footage with any nudity to it. Assuming your mother-in-law's friend isn't shooting any pagan rituals, you should fine Video Transfers (http://www.yalefilmandvideo.com/Transfers.htm) The above link is to their pricing page. Blake Cavett February 25th, 2009, 03:21 PM Thanks for your help! I'll be sending her the links and tell her to not be sending off her wild party films! :) Tristan Howard February 26th, 2009, 12:52 AM Hi Everyone, I’ll be graduating from college this May and am searching for a possible part-time job or internship for this summer. I’m currently located in Arcata in northwestern California, but am embracing a “Have Camcorder – Will Travel” mentality for my post-graduation years. Nevertheless, I’d prefer to limit my travels to the western U.S. I have years of experience with wildlife documentary production and feel most confident with cinematography, video editing, and writing. One of my documentaries was broadcast on local PBS stations and I’ve had several public screenings. I want a wildlife filmmaking-related job that will allow me to learn new skills and strengthen my résumé. I recently decided not to go to film school and figured I should further educate myself by directly engaging with what I want to do. I attached my résumé to this post as a Word document. Portfolio samples and more information can be found here: Tristan Howard Productions (http://www.tristanhowardproductions.com). Most of my experience is with a Canon XL1S and Vegas 6.0. I’ll have a Canon XLH1A by March and I’ll be available to work in June. If any of you are offering a job or have any tips for how I could acquire one, feel free to comment. One of my main strategies for career acquisition is to e-mail people and organizations for whom I’d like to work. I plan on sending them a brief biography/inquiry statement, my résumé, and my web address. Still, I try to keep in mind something Piers Warren wrote in “Careers in Wildlife Film-making”: “Networking when you are young, unknown, and unsure of yourself is far from easy. It’s often a fine line between making a good impression and being a pain in the neck!” Like many videographers, I eventually want to do freelance work, but I know professionals don’t start at the top. Thus, I want some official work experience. Nonetheless, I’d welcome advice if anyone has suggestions for how to get started as a freelancer. I got books to cover some of the business basics, like equipment, grant writing, and funding. But, I know many forum readers have knowledge that’s not in books and that I haven’t learned yet. I also know some things can only be learned by personal experience. Thanks for reading. Regards, Tristan Howard Tristan Howard February 28th, 2009, 07:19 PM I finally got a showreel put together. Feel free to check it out:Tristan Howard Productions: Showreel Video (http://www.tristanhowardproductions.com/showreelvideo.html). As expected, there are a lot of quick wildlife shots with nice music. But, I have some rare material you might want to check out, regardless of whether you could employ me. My reel has intense Canada goose combat, a ferocious mule deer buck fight, an egret eating a fish, federally endangered Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep climbing rocks, desert bighorn lambs vigorously frolicking, and a fleeting glimpse of a California condor gliding over the Grand Canyon. Jonathan Ramsey March 2nd, 2009, 10:53 AM Triston, You have a great start on a career in this field. You clearly have a lot of drive and have spent some good, quality time working with wildlife shooting. Further, and even more important, you are wise enough to be looking to others to better your work and your chances of making it. Kudos to you! That said, I would encourage you to remember that there is no one path to success in wildlife filmmaking. And, there are many different levels and approaches to shooting nature that all come under the guise of wildlife filmmaking, but are markedly different in how you get there and what your product is at the end of the day. First and foremost, pursue this with a love of what you are doing and be open to constantly learn from the subjects you are shooting (yes, even from a sunset). Sounds romantic? Well, ask anyone in their waxing years and they will tell you that more romance and less pragmatism leads to a much more content life. And, I suggest this because the cliche is very true, it's a tough, tough field to make a living in. So, if your first goal is to love and learn and grow in doing this, you have already succeeded! Secondly, you DO want to make it and that can't be ignored. Equipment, in my opinion, is very important. Some people will disagree and I respect that. They will say that you can get great shots with less gear if you know what you are doing. To some extent, that is certainly true. I would argue, however, that you will get far more great shots and stand out far more by having a smart arsenal of very good equipment that you know INSIDE OUT. Yes, we would all agree, I think, that you have to know your tech stuff very well to be successful. When something happens in nature, you don't have time to sit in the camera menu. When you're being paid to edit something with wildlife footage, you generally have armloads of footage and don't have the time then either to be looking up the key commands for your NLE. So, before you get good, paying gigs, be glad to have this time to experiment, to practice, and to find processes that work for you. Then, when you land a good job you will more readily excel. There is a lot more to cover about equipment and financing/upgrading/etc. if you were to be an entrepreneur and create your own production company. I won't get into that now as I'm not sure that's the avenue your pursuing. Most cliches in this industry (see above) are pretty true. It's a lot of who you know and being in the right place... etc. That can be hard to swallow when you're starting off. But it's not as bad as you think. Knowing people and being in the right spot go hand-in-hand. Make yourself available to meet folks. Go to conferences, environmental film fests, schools, make cold calls and ask to swing by a studio, etc. Then, if you can, be ready to spend a few years working for established companies and individuals as an intern. Most of those positions are low or no pay. That can be very hard. But I strongly believe it is useful to essentially apprentice with people while you're getting established. What happens is you end up spending that time meeting the community, getting established, and using someone else's reputation and equipment to gain credibility yourself. In exchange, you're helping them out with your labor and, hopefully, glowing personality ;) Hope that is a good help to start. Keep posting and let us know how you're faring. - Ramsey Nicole Hankerson March 2nd, 2009, 11:23 PM I know this is old but I do audio/sound work. Mick Haensler March 3rd, 2009, 09:21 AM vigorously frolicking Is this even possible :) ... seriously though. I looked at your reel Tristan and from what I saw it's really good. However, the stream bogged down at the goose fight. Most people who would hire you (including me) would stop right there and move on. It doesn't matter how good your reel is if people have a hard time viewing it, and yours looks very good. Mick Haensler Higher Ground Media Sam Rosado March 3rd, 2009, 10:13 AM is it audio, video or both? If its audio, I can help. I live in bridgeport and had a recording studio for 15 years. let me know what I can assist you with. Philip Gioja March 4th, 2009, 07:33 AM David - I sent you an email. Kevin Lewis March 4th, 2009, 05:39 PM Looking for a videgrapher for 3/8/09 in Glenside PA. This is right outside the Philadelphia area. The shoot is from 6:00 to 8:00pm. You do not need to have your own camera but being familer with the Canon XHA1 would be helpful but not mandatory. Must have experience. Tristan Howard March 4th, 2009, 07:16 PM Jonathan, Thanks for your generously thorough and lengthy response. Yeah, there seem to be endless possibilities for success. Persistence and dedication are what can make the possibilities pay off, but I know it’s not easy. I don’t think someone can casually decide to be a wildlife filmmaker and then get an ideal job or production contract anytime soon. Luckily, I have years of experience and I’ve learned a lot from mistakes and successes. Now, I’m trying to meet people in the business, learn more, and hopefully get my foot in the door, hold it open, and jump in before it closes. Your comments about equipment make sense. I still need to learn more about manual settings like zebra stripes, exposure, etc. I’ve been running a largely one-man show with cinematography, still photography, sound recording, script writing, editing, web design, publicity, job hunting, etc. and I don’t always devote as much attention to certain things as I should. I’m pretty darn confident with many aspects of the production process, but I do think taking more time to learn my equipment and learn the business would be beneficial before I land a good job. About a month ago I was in a big hurry to get a job, but if I got a responsibility-laden job and made a big mistake because of lack of experience, that could sabotage some of my goals. Your points about apprenticing make plenty of sense. Currently, I’m learning more about certain individuals/companies for whom I’d want to work and I’m reading up on the business. Because of my parents’ generous support, I could afford to intern with little to no pay. I’m hoping to get some sort of work experience this summer and also want to attend the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival. One of my films will screen at a small-scale film festival in Redding, CA on March 15 and I’ll be there for a brief intro. I also entered my documentaries in the International Wildlife Film Festival, but won’t attend because it coincides with my last week of school. Anyway, I’m working on making myself available and getting my name out. I think I understand your points about romantic aspects of the business. I do love working on my projects and I have a thing for sunsets, as can be evidenced here: Tristan Howard Productions: Little Hot Springs Valley Sunset Photos (http://www.tristanhowardproductions.com/lhsvsunsets.html). In a lot of ways, I feel like I’ve already succeeded. My professional productions and TV broadcasts made me happy and I was pleased with the results (though I still recognize many deficiencies). A big current goal for me is to succeed on a financial as well as an emotional level. Eventually, I do want to pursue the entrepreneur route with my own production company. I’ve already done that on a small-scale, but I haven’t been in a position to negotiate paying jobs and I’ve yet to make a profit. First, I think it’s important for me to learn more and actually graduate from college. Thanks for your post, Jonathan. It was very helpful. Mick, Yeah, bighorn lambs can engage in vigorous frolicking, but the word “frolic” implies vigorous activity. So, I guess “vigorous” could be interpreted as an unnecessary qualifier. Thanks for checking out my reel. I don’t know why the stream bogged down during the goose fight. I use the Network Solutions web hosting package, so perhaps the problem is due to a glitch in their system. On my PC, the video played fine with Firefox, Safari, and Explorer. Nevertheless, Explorer took much longer to load the file than the other browsers. The file is pretty close (48.7 MB) to the 50 MB size restriction for my web hosting service. Perhaps that contributed to the problem. If anyone has trouble playing the video or knows why it won’t play, please let me know. Your point about hiring makes sense. It reminds me of what my English teachers say about the publishing world. If publishers see a serious grammar error on the first page of a submission, the paper quickly qualifies for recycling. Thanks for the input. Pat Celec March 5th, 2009, 08:57 AM Hi Kevin, I'm available for Sunday night. Have my own mini-dv gear, PD-150's - 20 years experience.
