I just ran across an article stating that avid does not handle HDCAM footage at this point. How does one go about editing HDCAM video?

Every Avid product but Xpress DV will handle HD.

The cheapest Avid HD option is Xpress (not XpressDV) and the meridian board.

You can however have the HD footage transfered to mini-DV and offline in XpressDV. Then of course you must take the EDL and original footage to an HD finishing/online suite.

Final Cut Pro will handle HD footage natively.

But you'll still need the $4,000 dollar Meridian board.

Aren't Meridians locked to Avid software? I don't think you can use them with FCP. I might be wrong... I'd go with the upcoming AJA HD board for FCP. They have a smashing 10-bit codec.

Yeah, I might be off on the Meridian board. I could of sworn I had read that some where, though. My point was...you'll still need a pricey HD board to play with native HD in FCP.

How much will the AJA board retail for? Will these things ever come down in price?

The Aurora is probably the least expensive on the market right now and if I remember right they have an HD upgrade http://www.auroravideosys.com/Pages/products.html The other board to look at is the Digital Voodoo boards http://www.digitalvoodoo.net/ They have various options and upgrades also.

We are discussing HD here right? 1080p and 720p? Not uncompressed SD D1. I think the AJA board is something like $8 000. Aurora has not yet presented a HD board (only SD uncompressed). I have one myself. They're excellent.

I don't know if the Meridian boards are what drives Avid DS HD (the only Avid HD system). The Avid DS HD is something like $300 000 so I don't think the Aja board is very expensive in comparison.
