There will almost certainly be provisions for redundant recording as this is generally required to obtain big-budget insurance. The dual recordings can be achieve in the camera, externally, or with a combination of the two.

On large productions they make back up copies that are checked for errors before the camera media itself is deleted for reuse, it's not usually done on the camera itself but by the data wrangler. Some cameras do allow the recording of a lower quality copy for the editing, this was one of the reasons given by Sony for the F3 having a non broadcast quality on board recorder and the up coming digital Aaton records editing proxies on board, but the master itself is uncompressed RAW.

I have to disagree with this one, Chris. While there are many of us at DVinfo who are not making money with our cameras, and don't consider ourselves in business, most of us don't acquire our gear as a luxury. Rather we are driven an insatiable desire to just make films. To us, gear is something we need to get jollies- to get our fix, so to speak. It becomes a necessity. We love the idea of shooting a prefect scene and hear our audience of one or two, ooh and ahh at a shot. And, I have always maintained that it is the hundreds of thousands of us out here doing this, that manage to keep prices down and develoment going on gear for the professionals who use it for their livelihood. I think nothing has made this clearer than the DSLR revolution.

This is consumerism at it's best! We 'need' to have an expensive
camera even though we aren't making money with it. More power
to all of you guys that can do this, good for you! There is
no way on the earth that I am spending several thousand dollars
on a hobby. I don't 'need' anything other than food and a place
to live.....but I'm the exception. I also refuse to have
credit cards and 'deficit' spend. This is all in the nicest
possible spirit, and I'm glad that you guys can live your
dreams making movies. Just to me, necessity is things like food,
water and shelter. All this other stuff is just marketing and
'convincing' us that we need all kinds of things, when they are
really, as Chris says....more of a luxury/want. But you are
all doing something right if you can afford to buy cameras in this
crappy economy, so good for you!

Yes I think you are right, since the dslr revolution, I think that non pro people have no excuse to search for more. The culmination of this is the hacked gh2. This camera is so good, If you can't do a good to very good movie, short or just filming your kids or cat with it, you won't be able to do it with any $ 5000 and above camera. It is your skill set the limiting factor and no matter what camera you want to use it won't make your films better. stop surfing gear site and just go on more creative and artistic ones to develop your skill.

Even for professional cameras you need to be aware of the market you're servicing. There's little point in paying a large amount for a higher spec camera if your clients can't or won't pay the difference and are happy to live with the lower quality cameras. Although, there will be people who will provide the cameras at uneconomic rates.

Speaking of FS100, the true beauty of all this that's about to go down is the ripple effects it'll have on cameras like the FS100 and the 5D Mark II. For those of us, like myself, who likely won't be able to afford the likes of the newly released cams at this time, we can take advantage of the inevitable flooding of used cam sells as people unload to put towards the new stuff. I can only imagine a 5D Mark II selling for as little as $1,500 or an FS100 selling in the $3,500 range. Yes, they'll be dated or inferior in many aspects to the new stuff, but we still know what they can do. They still produce beautiful, comparable imagery...and now at a fraction of the price.

We all win in the end. I'll se ya'll tonight....

Most of that seems right - I'd be very surprised if it was a 2K or higher cam. Most people will be happy as clams with "true" 1080 resolution, 10 bit 4:2:2 color space, XLRs, a ND wheel, and a clean SDI/HDMI out.

If the price is $15K, I think Canon would be making a mistake - you want to sell glass? Make a cheaper camera then your competition. Either it's going to be priced more along the lines of an AF100, or more expensive then the F3 (a truly "pro" camera).

I suppose it could be both as has been rumored, but the $10-15 K pricing model seems a bit out of wack if true. Of course, that price is a lot more justifiable if the camera's 2K or higher resolution-wise...

Don't know it it's 10 bit out of HD-SDI or not, but that sounds a lot like th XF305!

Exactly. Heck, even the XF 105 has 50mbp, 4:2:2 SDI genlock/time code - and that goes for $4,000 (and has a lens to boot).

Strap a 16mp S35 sensor in that camera for $4K and you're rocking like Don Dokken.

It's also missing that one feature that is absolutely critical to my filmmaking process. I can't believe Canon would release it that way! If they don't start listening to what the market is demanding they'll be out of business soon...

It's interesting to note how many of us are cruising here to await the announcement.

It's a new era for product launching for sure.

They tell us the date (but rarely the time) and leave it to the "market" to determine which portals we go to to keep informed.

No central "live streaming" place for breaking tech news as yet. (that's probably a market opportunity for someone, tho it would be a nightmare with bandwidth spikes that size!)

So we check in, again and again and again in multiple places to satisfy our curiosity.

It's also interesting that NONE of the places I check are directly associated with the one company that could manage everything - CANON. I went on their web site this morning, and left in seconds realizing that there is NOTHING agile or breaking news oriented about it. Even mighty Apple, has to essentially put their web site "on hold" during breaking announcements, and re-deploy it when the official "go" command is given. It is a brave new "news" world out there with so much fragmentation that we don't have a clue who to trust to both "get it first" AND "get it right." (The thing in my mind that makes what SHOULD be the "breaking news focus" channel - Twitter - nearly useless - way too much noise, not nearly enough signal.)

Well, if they're not true, then they're not details - just rumors. I'm not sure anything has truly been leaked from Canon. There has been a lot of speculation, that's for sure.
