View Full Version : Packaging of final product

I've recently upgraded my product to square tin cases. I'm now looking for a better way to package them for post.

Up till now I just used bubbled envelopes. These just arn't good enough. One of the tin cases even had a dent coming from wholesaler to me.

I wondered if anyone could share where they source their packaging from? Ideally I was thinking a 'mailer' box' would be best, and I'd also like some material to 'cushion' the inside, I also was thinking of that really thin foam sheeting to put between my three cases so they don't scrape against each other?

Any thoughts / tips / recomendations?

Here is an example of a photographer friends packaged product:

Cheesy I know but I staple 2 cinema tickets and a small bag of popcorn to my 'Thank You' letter. My Bride and Groom copy of the DVD is in a presentation case (about £8 from here: GFSmithPhotomount Misc1 (http://www.gfsmithphotomount.co.uk/cutcfolds.htm)) and the other 2 copies are in white Amaray DVD cases with a printed insert. The whole thing is packed with white tissue packing paper

I recently bought some flatpack cardboard boxes only to find a few weeks after that Royal Mail resized their 'small package' size and it was going to cost me double to post them! so now I have to cut each one down to size so it's classed as a 'small package' - everything fits in nice and snug- never had any issues

Hi Pete

That's not cheesy at all ..it's all about presentation!! The covers look very neat ...They say the outside is "simulated leatherette" ....Does it have any writing on it ? It would be nice with embossed lettering saying "Our Wedding" ..Using those cases also saves making a sleeve.

Keep on with the tickets and popcorn ..it gives them something to remember you uniquely by!! It's a good sales technique ... they won't forget the tickets and popcorn guy when someone asks them whi shot your wedding!

We recently changed our packaging also to include popcorn, as well as movie candies. Since my husband and I are a team, we each pick our favorite candy and buy the movie-style boxes. Each box gets a bag of popcorn, and two candies, tied up with a ribbon that matches their wedding colors. And their stack of DVDs/Blurays gets tied up with the same ribbon.

We use white boxes, and put a company logo label on two sides, with their address label on top. The box is wide enough to put the two stacks in side by side so when they open the lid it should be nicely present for them.

I feel inadequate for providing my films in amaray cases now!

Can anyone recommend a good website based in the UK for presentation boxes for double disc (bluray/dvd) ???

Can anyone recommend a good website based in the UK for presentation boxes for double disc (bluray/dvd) ???We use the lovely soft padded image wrap CD/DVD Folios from Loxley Colour. https://www.loxleycolour.com/cddvdfolio.aspx They are pricey at nearly £30 including shipping & VAT but very classy. The engraved leatherette ones are a bit cheaper. Sim Imaging have a nice selection of linen covered cases in about 20 different colours & a matching case with an 8GB USB device but I prefer the Loxley ones. Here is what my tin cases with window look like. Cases are about £1.20 each on bulk order and stickers are £5 per 90 stickers from Moo.com.

That aside, what I'm really asking about is where you buy in bulk your mailer boxes and tissue paper and foam padding etc...
Is there any good cheap online sources with a good variety of sizes etc..?

P.S. I'm definitely stealing the popcorn idea! Thanks guys!

*P.S. Sorry for bad quality, Facebook compressed that image to the max.

We provide 3-5 copies of the DVDs for clients (b&G, and one for each parent) so $25 a piece is a bit much. We had been doing the typical DVD case.

I just found a bulk order of 150 linen covered boxes for about $500 but we'll have to do the wet embossing ourselves. That would last us 3-5 years instead of spending $500 in one year.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone is using anything fancy to package up these nice DVD cases. I'm looking to enhance my customer's entire unpacking experience - like when I buy an Apple product. So it starts with the standard USPS shipping box. Then they open this and find a nice shrink wrapped white box which when opened, reveals our beautiful DVD cases. I just started looking around on-line but haven't hit on anything yet.

I really have always liked the white and tissue paper idea. When I was a photog, back in the old days (yes, shooting on film) we used to make up the bride's album and that was usually leatherette and always white with "Our Wedding" in embossed silver lettering on the front. It came, of course, in a white cardboard box which was lined with tissue paper and after printing the enlargements and putting them in the album it was returned to the tissue paper and the box was presented to the bride.

When I went over to video I really expected to be able to easily find "off the shelf" solutions for weddings and yes, two white DVD cases with "Our Wedding" in Silver on the front and also in a white box....You can still buy the white albums and they are really easy to find but the DVD case????

I wonder why .... weddings are still popular ??

Just a segway from the original question. We package our DVDs in the standard black DVD cases with the clear plastic sleeve...print custom covers that match the DVD menus.

Recently we got a bad batch of the black cases...we ordered them from the same place we previously had, and they were fine before, but this batch they seemed to have cheaped out on us, so looking for a good supplier of quality, standard DVD cases. Any suggestions?

It's interesting that the Adobe Creative Cloud versions of their suite was released yesterday, but Encore is no longer a part of the suite. Granted you can download Encore CS6, but both Apple and Adobe seem to think that physical media is on its way out.

Most of my weddings end up on Blu-Ray now, but I wonder if it will all start going to USB drives or something similar.

Is the Encore CS6 version the final release of this product?
Yes. The trend in the video and broadcast industry is moving away from physical media distribution. The
future is in cloud and streaming content. Therefore we are focusing more on products that deliver to
streaming services. For example, Adobe Media Encoder and Adobe Premiere Pro CC include a new
feature allowing users to create iPad-ready video with QuickTime chapter markers. The Encore CS6
version will be the final release of this product.

I'm not really sure where my cases are made..probably China but they seem to be good quality and I buy from the supplier in lots of 100. I did make the huge mistake once of buying local from the discount store..They looked OK from the outside but about 50% fell to pieces when I used them.

I can get Amray cases here in either clear or black but didn't like the fact that the 2nd DVD (mine are always sets of 2) is on a little swing out piece of plastic. Can you get Amray cases that just have one DVD that fits in each cover or not?? I think our ones reserve the left hand cover for a booklet as it has two clips on it

I think that even Amaray cases are horrible. Cheap plasticky & so easy to break. Just like the even more fragile cheap & plasticky CD cases. At least it's harder to shatter DVD cases. Blu-ray cases are no better. Why is it that they cannot create a nice standard disc case that doesn't break or split? I have seen the occasional commercial CD release in a decent heavy-duty cardboard. It wasn't until a couple of years ago that you could even buy decent quality disc cases for packaging while DVD discs have been on the market for over 10 years.

Chris,

Amazon UK has these, I'm sure you can find a dealer in Aus or nearby:

Amaray 2 Disc DVD case black 50 pack: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Amaray-Disc-case-black-pack/dp/B00C0W2OY6/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1371658158&sr=8-7&keywords=amaray+double+dvd+case)

They're not terribly romantic though!

I use a nice presentation boxed version for the bride and groom - they can buy extra if they want - I use Amaray cases with a nice printed insert for extra copies if they wish to keep the price down.

I find they are as good as any other plastic case - I've had much worse over the years

I use a basic white Amaray case with inlay sleeve for a standard delivery, with a face to face double case when we are supplying a stills disc as well. We also have a choice of about 12 different styles of padded or chromed cases if clients want something more stylish.

The Amaray cases come from these people DVD Case - Amaray Premium White Double 14mm Face to face | TotalBlankMedia.com (http://www.totalblankmedia.com/dvd-case-amaray-premium-white-double-14mm-face-to-face-p-4060.html). I have used them for several years as they are very reliable and always respond immediately to any rare problems. They also supply various other useful items such as blank discs, some padded cases, memory cards etc. probably only of interest to UK members though, although the cases should be available in other countries.

I followed up the rumour regarding the closure of jewel boxing and got this response:
After more than a decade supplying software templates and perforated paper for use with Super Jewel Box™ King and Standard cases, Jewelboxing™ has decided to shut down operations.

Our reasons (in no particular order): 1. Demand for optical media (CDs/DVDs) and packaging solutions has greatly declined in recent years thanks to cloud transfer/storage and other media. 2. Jewelboxing's resources (staff, space, time, money) are needed for other projects* here at Coudal Partners (JB's parent company) 3. At current costs and inventory levels, producing another print run of template paper just doesn't make financial sense.

To be clear, we will continue to sell Jewelboxing kits and paper UNTIL OUR CURRENT SUPPLY OF PAPER RUNS OUT. Currently, we have enough King paper to support a few month's worth of orders and more Standard paper than we know what to do with, if demand goes up after this announcement, we may sell out more quickly.

Furthermore, be aware that Super Jewel Box International, the manufacturer of SJB, and our case supplier, is going strong and will continue to manufacture the cases for the foreseeable future. Bulk orders (over 1200 cases) will still be available directly from them. Smaller quantities are available from other suppliers. There should be no shortage of cases, our Jewelboxing™ custom paper is the issue here. We've had some interest from others interested in producing more paper (if you're willing to make a large investment of time, money, and space, contact me!), but if that doesn't happen, we will make our templates and dielines public domain.

Once we make the announcement on the site (Jewelboxing - Super Jewel Box Packaging System - CD and DVD Cases (http://www.jewelboxing.com)), we'll share some contacts, resources, and ideas to help you continue using Super Jewel Box cases without our paper.

We thank you very much for your support over the years, we regret having to make this difficult decision, and we remind you that we have quite a bit of Standard (CD) paper, so if you're able to convert to that format, we may be able to supply you for quite a while. We hope you'll continue to use the fantastic Super Jewel Box cases and continue to support SJB International, who have been great partners in this project.

Especially flash drives that are either white or silver and have "Our Wedding" printed on them!!!

I have looked around for years and you seem to be able to get thumbdrives in every shape and size EXCEPT a wedding one....I can get them printed here easily BUT do I really want to have 50 drives sitting in stock ...(that's the minimum order) and even if every single bride had one it would still take me over a year to clear 50 of the little suckers.

One would think that just someone would make a drive with some printing or a pic of a bride and groom on it where you could buy just a few at a time?

Chris

Nigel Barker
June 27th, 2013, 12:19 AM
These flash drives are being promoted to photographers to use to deliver their images instead of on disc. They are solid metal nice quality & feel quite weighty although to my mind look awfully cheesy with the fake jewels Jewelled Heart USB Digital Image Presentation Kit | USB Jewellery, USB Heart, Jewelled Heart USB Drives, USB Sticks for photographers | Photovalue.com (http://www.photovalue.com/USB-Jewelled-Heart.htm)

Chris Harding

Hi Nigel

I agree. They really do go over the top a bit and do look rather cheesy ... if a bride was carrying around her laptop and that drive was bumping around in her handbag I would expect one or two of the fake stones to soon fall out and then it would indeed look tacky!

I wonder why there isn't just one manufacturer than has a normal looking thumbdrive in an elegant white with the words "Our Wedding" silk screened on each side? That's really all you would need but sadly I have yet to ever find an off-the-shelf supplier.

It would probably be cheaper to have a silkscreen made and just zap your own as and when you need one or two during weddings where brides want a USB delivery of photos or video?

Chris

Not to hijack the thread, but is anyone here delivering USB flash drives, and if so, can you please recommend a good source.

Mine are leather and metal, with company logo embossed on the leather, and about $20 each when I buy in bulk. Made by an Australian company called "flashbay". (Chris, these guys don't require a minimum order of 50. And if you wanted ones that simply said "Our wedding", it would be easy to get them made up.)

I don't know of an equivalent US company, but they must be out there.

If you have a bigger budget, then there are beautiful handcrafted wooden ones made in Germany (Thalbach Design Manufaktur - USB-Sticks und exklusives Design aus edlem Holz (http://www.thalbach.de/designs/)), there's Swarovski ones (USB Keys - Fashion accessories - Swarovski Online Shop (http://www.swarovski.com/Web_US/en/0202/category/Fashion_accessories/USB_Keys.html)), and there's minimalist crystal ones (Logical Art ESHOP | Empty Memory (http://www.logical-art.co.uk/eshop_02.htm)).

I wish my budget allowed for these. But an additional drawback is that many of these tend to max out around 4gb, which for me cuts it pretty fine. I'd suggest you'd want at least 8gb, with 12gb or 16gb allowing room for Indian weddings and photos or other data the couple might want to store.

By the way, if anyone is looking for a luxury DVD case, check out this leather box handmade in Spain:

Zeppelin Dvd Case Brown-Old Leather (http://theleatheralbum.com/en/dvd-cases/153-zeppelin-dvd-case-brown-old-leather.html)

After ordering a couple as samples, I decided not to go with it -- too expensive for me, and also impractical, since they fit just one disc. But oh what a beautiful box.

I've sort of looked into getting some sort of box custom made on Etsy or locally, but not seriously -- off-the-shelf cases from Wedding DVD Cases - Blank DVDs - DVD Jewel Case - VHS Tape Packs – Warehouse Video, Middlesex, UK (http://www.warehouse-video.co.uk/) currently suit my needs and wallet better.

Here in the UK both Loxley Colour & SIM2000 are now producing cases that match their DVD/CD Folios but contain a USB device.

The Loxley credit card sized device looks pretty slick but I am not sure how robust the swivel plug will be.
