View Full Version : Who is going to NAB 2006?
Lorinda Norton February 12th, 2006, 10:32 PM But to get into the secret DV-INFO party, you'll have to complete some additional tasks such as a demonstrated ability to drink Shiner Bock (the national beer of Texas). :-)
Hope you can make it!
-gb-
Well, as I posted in the "beer forum" I did all right with Amber Bock a few days ago. How much more difficult can the pride of Texas be? ;) Sounds like fun tryin'!
Thanks for the help!
Greg Boston February 12th, 2006, 10:36 PM Sounds like fun tryin'!
I think you'll do just fine on the entrance exam! So, I wonder how much the airline would charge me to ship a keg of Shiner? Wouldn't that make for an interesting baggage claim.

Jerry Matese February 12th, 2006, 10:38 PM Michael, I'm so glad that the Rio came through. It's going to be a huge improvement over the Stardust from last year. My only concern is that we're no longer within walking distance from dvinfo.net secret headquarters.
The FCPUG event is most definitely a must-see. It seems like everybody, and I do mean everybody was there. It was the most fun I had all week at NAB.
And believe it or not, I still have that bottle of Raspberry Hangar One Vodka in my freezer, courtesy of AJA Video. Why do I still have half a bottle left from last April? Why, because that vodka's made for sippin', not for chuggin'....
http://www.dvinfo.net/gallery/showimage.php?i=166&c=11
(do I look tipsy?)
Hey Scott,
I don't know you, but my Hangar One is not just for sipping. It's for enjoying, so make sure it's all gone by before NAB 06. Perhaps I'll bump into you. I have my Hangar One shipped to me straight from the mfg to PA where there is none to be found.
Scott Anderson February 13th, 2006, 12:22 PM Jerry, I'm working the Hangar One, believe me.
It's just that ever since I lived downstairs from a pair of Russian immigrants in New York, Vodka and I have had a love/hate relationship. Long story.
Anyway, I finally got around to registering for my exhibits-only pass (thanks, Chris!). I'm trying to line up invitations to all the Sunday events, but no one seems to have announced anything yet. I've been to Apple the last two years, but I missed out on both Adobe and Sony.
I'll be there Sunday morning - any word yet on Sunday activities?
Hugh DiMauro February 14th, 2006, 11:28 AM Barring any emergencies, I'll be there. I gotta see this. I hear NAB is the Nirvana of video people, the Disney World of digital. I'm registered for the free VIP pass. Thanks, Chris. You're a good lad.
Plus, I'll get to see Chris Hurd's 1960's TV Detective haircut. To me, that will be worth the trip.
Joe Carney February 14th, 2006, 12:24 PM I just registered with the Graham Patten pass. I'll stop by their booth and thank them personally when I get there.
Got room reservations at the El Cortez for 50.00 a night located about 3 miles from the Convention Center. Not for everyone,
but you can take a taxi, catch the monorail or walk. Everything else close to the center seems to be starting at 150.00 a night.
Lorinda Norton February 14th, 2006, 05:21 PM Hugh DiMauro at NAB........Las Vegas will never be the same. ;)
Hey Joe, I know what you mean about the rooms. Now I've gotta get a job to help pay for all the fun!
About the passes, yes--thank you, Chris and Quantel!
Hugh DiMauro February 15th, 2006, 06:54 AM Las Vegas is not one bit jealous of Atlantic City.
Hell, they're just building an ocean for the hell of it!
East Coast, Yeah baby!
Mark Donnell February 23rd, 2006, 04:44 PM Using the information that you posted for free exhibits passes to the NAB I was able to obtain one. I've never been to a NAB event, and I can't stay for the whole thing, but I will be there Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th, and I am planning to attend a Sony Vegas seminar being taught by the VAAST group. I'm sure that it will be interesting.
Mark Bournes February 24th, 2006, 01:35 PM BTW...If you want to save $$$$ book your hotel thru NAB's site you will definitly save some money. I booked at the Monte Carlo and saved about
$75.00 a night compared to expedia prices. Just book fast the NAB rooms sell out fast, then your stuck paying high prices since it is NAB week.
Good Luck, See you all there.
Mark Bournes
Jeff DeMaagd March 8th, 2006, 11:26 AM I think I can go and would like to go but I can't quite justify it, so maybe next year. I would like to meet the folks at Beachtek but I got word that they aren't going to NAB '06.
I would like to see Sony's booth this year, but if I can request that someone take a few photos for me, that would be very appreciated.
Mike Teutsch March 21st, 2006, 12:40 PM Well, I decided to go to NAB! Couldn't pass up a trip to meet so many of the nice people on this forum. Besides, I haven't been to Vegas in many many years. Do they have a place at the Convention center where you can lock-up your credit cards before entering?!?!?!?!?
Many thanks to the folks at Quantel for the code.
We will have to figure a place to meet up while there. Did you set anything up yet Chris?
See you soon,
Mike
Lorinda Norton March 21st, 2006, 12:53 PM We will have to figure a place to meet up while there. Did you set anything up yet Chris?
There's that, and another matter of importance: Greg, how's it going with the airlines and that keg? Need help? ;)
Rob Lohman March 21st, 2006, 01:22 PM That's good news Mike, we'll see you there!
Zack Birlew March 21st, 2006, 02:17 PM I figured at some point we'd all be over at the RED booth! =D
I know I'll be there Monday morning first thing.
Robert Kirkpatrick March 21st, 2006, 03:31 PM I just convinced work to pay (well, reimburse me) for my hotel, ticket, and classes for the Post/Production Conference. I plan on being there the whole time. I'm actually looking forward to the classes. I can tell you that trying to find a place with 6 days of consecutive rooms is next to impossible right now -- unless you want to pay an arm and a leg. Even the non-conference hotels (and some of the motels!) are already $225+ a night. I lucked out with Harrah's -- the hotel casinos seem cheaper than the non-casino hotels. I need to start researching cheap eats. This will be my first time in Vegas, if you don't count the time I drove through on a Greyhound bus.
And yeah, I'll be hunting down the RED booth too. I have a feeling that's gonna be crowded.
Scott Anderson March 21st, 2006, 03:36 PM I'm also thinking of hitting the Red booth first thing Monday morning. I had earlier proposed the cafeteria near the North Hall as an impromptu morning meetup, perhaps in the hour before the show floor opens.
But Red has changed my mind. I think I may need to go there first, otherwise I won't be able to think about anything else. How about we all meet for breakfast at the South Hall cafeteria?
Joe Carney March 22nd, 2006, 10:48 AM I'm getting there the Friday before to see some of the Vegas sites. I buy a lot of home theater stuff from Tweeter and they said I should check out their concept store. I heard the Apple store was pretty good too.
I lucked out and got a room at the Frontier for 49.95 a nite through vegas.com, cost me 10 bucks in fees, but I'm saving enough I can take a cab to the convetion each day (3 miles away).
I actually got good air prices on Ted (United) booking through Yahoo travel online.
Ken Willinger March 24th, 2006, 04:43 PM I don't post here often but since I'm also going to NAB I thought I'd chime in. I'm arriving on Tuesday the 25th. If there are any get togethers please post here. I'd enjoy meeting some of you.
Michael Horton March 25th, 2006, 01:06 PM Make sure you hit the ProMax event Tuesday night at the Stardust and the FCPUG event at the Rio Wednesday night. Lots of folks from this forum will be there

Dean Sensui March 26th, 2006, 03:23 AM Well, I'll be there.
We have a few stories to shoot while out there but I'm setting aside as much time as possible to attend seminars and walk the floor.
Hope to meet some of you out there.
Richard Veil March 26th, 2006, 05:11 AM Should you need anything. and if I can help I will try my best
Have fun..

Joe Carney March 27th, 2006, 12:14 PM I was wrong, not the fremont hotel, the El Cortez near Fremont street.
No internet access in room, but I have Verizon Wireless Broadband for my Laptop, so I can connect anywhere. Las Vegas is covered.
Question...are any sort of camera or camcorders allowed in? I would love to get video of cool stuff and upload for people to see.
Scott Anderson March 30th, 2006, 07:22 AM IIRC, the "official" policy on the NAB show floor is no recording devices unless you have recieved press credentials, but that policy is widely ignored. I have seen hundreds and hundreds of people carrying little handycams around, taping every product in sight. I myself have often carried a small digital camera, and have never once been asked not to take a picture.
If you tried to walk in with a big ENG-style rig on your shoulder, you might get asked questions, but if it's small enough to fit in your shoulder bag, I would say don't worry about it.
Jacques Mersereau April 6th, 2006, 07:34 AM Hey DVINFOers,
I will be attending NAB again this year. The boss and I are
staying at the Bellagio. I hope to see you this time around Mr. Hurd.
Chris Hurd April 6th, 2006, 07:40 AM At one of the evening functions for sure, Mr. Mersereau!
Erik Rangel April 18th, 2006, 04:50 PM I'm giddy with anticipation! I finally decided to just bite the bullet and go. So I'm looking forward to meeting all of you out there.
Thanks Chris for the VIP code for the exhibit floor pass...funny how I didn't want to pay the twenty bucks to get in... and now that I don't have to I can justify spending hundreds on a impromtu trip to Vegas. :)
I'll be getting in Sunday and leaving tuesday afternoon, so I'll miss the FCP shindig unfortunaly....I use premiere so-*shrugs*
RED! BABY! RED!

Richard Veil April 18th, 2006, 05:00 PM Say hello to Eileen... they might have some swag there.

Greg Boston April 18th, 2006, 05:51 PM Don't know why but I never got around to posting in this thread. I will be there from Saturday through Thursday and will be assisting Chris H. with reporting duties. Am working on a way to get video from the show back to our DVINFO folks in a timely manner. Stay tuned....

Erik Rangel April 18th, 2006, 06:55 PM Thanks for the head-up Richard.
I do love me some swag.
Where's everyone going to be partying on Sunday or Moday night?
Dylan Couper April 21st, 2006, 04:08 PM Ok, I'm (finally) offcially in for NAB. Monday to Thursday.

Well...Greg I have verizon wireless broadband on my laptop, and they have coverage in Vegas. It's only about 256kb uplink, 700kb downlink. Let me know if that will help. If the signal is not blocked that is. I also have a 60gig usb drive to hold things.
Also, how does the wireless cafe work there? Can anybody hook up?
Anyway, PM me and let me know. I'll be there tonight through next Friday.
I'm just sitting at concourse C at Dulles waiting for my flight as I write this.
Joe Carney April 22nd, 2006, 12:36 PM Wonder if anybody is around. I'm sitting on the floor using my laptop right next to the NAB store, it's 11:36 Vegas time.
Chris Hurd April 22nd, 2006, 12:41 PM I'm at the LVCC tomorrow just long enough to pick up my badge, then heading "off campus" for the rest of Sunday. Hope you brought some comfortable shoes! See you Monday,

Hi Joe,
My flight arrives at 7:39 this evening. The wireless cafe is open to all but at peak times it's difficult to acquire an IP address. There is also some company that offers wi-fi throughout the convention center for about $5/day. I have Sprint high speed on my phone and am going to be testing it out during the show.
-gb-
Joe Carney April 22nd, 2006, 07:39 PM Greg, I've got Verizon Broadband, and it's working great, fastest I've ever seen it go. So fortunately I don't need another wireless access system, just a convenient wall outlet everyonce in awhile to recharge the battery. Heck, my hotel room is so old it doesn't have three prong support. But it's cheap and clean.
The taxi drivers warned me it will be extremely hard to get a taxi on the mornings and evenings of the conferance. Someone told me to check out the city bus system.
I'm going over to Party Gras at the Fremont Street experience. Live music, beads and booze.

Sheesh...I would have to book a room at a hotel 3.5 miles from the LVCC. Good thing I'm sleeping in mornings...
Okay, Joe. Live music, the booze--understood. Beads? :)

Beads are a part of Mardi Gras. I won't go into how they are normally obtained.

Yeah, got my first set from Fitzgeralds Hotel/Casino. Great blues band playing on the main stage.
btw, a bus called the 'Duce' a double decker, picks up passengers right next to Jillians at the edge of Fremont Experience. I'm trying to find out what the connections are, it goes to places on the strip, don't know how close to the LVCC though. I'll try to post prices and such.
Getting back to my Scotch now.

I got about 12 pounds of beads from Mardi Gras 2000, but I just caught them, and did not have to show anything. In fact all I heard was "Put It Back On!" I did get a lot of pictures of those aquiring them the normal way! :)
Don't get in until Tuesday night, but look forward to seeing everyone.
Mike
Nick Hiltgen April 23rd, 2006, 01:40 AM Ok fellas (and ladies) I'm attending my first NAB I'll be there tuesday wednesday and thursday, (or should be) and I'll be there with my company so uh, plese no mentions of why I haven't written anything else in my "f900's for dummies" series (by the way look for another installment shortly) I'm looking forward to meeting the crew checking out a few booths and trying to find a "cheap" HD switcher for the company, if anyone knows where the snell and wilcox booth is or the evertz booth, that would be some awesome info.
Greg Boston April 23rd, 2006, 03:08 AM Don't worry, Nick. There will be plenty of maps of the show floor and who is where. Pick one up when you enter.
-gb-
Joe Carney April 23rd, 2006, 05:40 PM Here is a link to the Las Vegas bus routes for those of well off the strip.
It also talks about the new Duece double decker buses.
