recording line-in to avchd?

Hi, I'm exploring several options for recording from a high-definition camera that does not itself have any recording options -- it just has video output. Is it possible to send a line-out from a video source to a line-in of an AVCHD device and record it? Does anyone know if this is done in practice, and which devices support it? Is there such a thing as an AVCHD recording deck, sans camera? (Or is that just called getting a computer with a capture card?)
