Can a Sony, Canon or Panasonic AVC Camera Record AVI or MOV files? at DVinfo.net

I'd like to know if there is a camera made by Sony, Canon or Panasonic that can either record AVI or MOV files, or includes a utility to convert the camera's output to an AVI or MOV, without re-compressing.

Not without re-compressing. You can use Cineform AVI though which is a visually lossless codec, so you don't lose any quality during re-encoding.

I have a client asking this same question. Is there no hard drive or SD based camera (HDV or not) that can record in a h.264 format or something else that is editable in Quicktime Pro w/o having to capture through an external editor like FCP etc. ?

They are wanting a cam to shoot case studies that can be edited very quickly for content and then posted on the web. Let me know if anyone has any ideas. They were looking at the Panasonic AG-HSC1U which says H.264 compression but I'm guessing the raw files aren't able to be opened in Quicktime Pro for editing?

I was talking with AVCHD support guru from Cineform at NAB about NEO with Vegas and the new Panasonic solid state cams including the HMC-150. His advice was the AVC decoder in Adobe CS3 is excellent but if you don't have that buy the CoreAVC.com decoder. Cost is a whopping $14.95 for the pro edition from Core.

I know it's not on your list but the new JVC GY-HD200 "B" will record to MOV on a card so you can slip the card in a reader or laptop and drop the MOV on the time line and edit. According to JVC at the NAB Super Meet. They claim it was the only cam that could do that.
