working with AVCHD on my mac

Hello
This might be a very simple doubt for many, but i hope you can help me!

I just got the HDR SR1 sony, that records in AVCHD and sound in 5.1

I have a Mac Intel Core 2 Duo
got the Final Cut 6.0

I dont know how to import the videos to my hard disk and play them or edit them on the Mac.
the sound is in 5.1, i havnt got succes in playing it in Final Cut or quicktime player..

Can anybody help me telling me how can i convert the videos so i can play and Edit them in Final Cut 6.0 without loosing their quality?!?!?!

Thank you very very much

atte,
Carlos A.

1) Run software update to bring Final Cut up to 6.05.

2) Go to "File" / "Log & Transfer" menu and you'll be able to see thumbnails of your clips and choose what to ingest.
