Well, if we are focussing on series that were "groundbreaking"... then historically, you should go back to the early days of televison. How bout "Playhouse 90" and "The Sid Ceasar Show"?

As a side note, "My Favourite Year" is one of my favourite films about early television. Great film.

If I must choose from the list my pick is 24. But that show is
third to Scrubs (thanks Charles!) and Wonderfalls (if it wasn't
cancelled).

24 is the only show that had me sitting on the edge of my sofa
with my heart pumping and sweat in my hands during one of
the latest episodes (the one with Chapel). Damn!

I also like La Femme Nikita the series as well as Stargate SG1
and was a great fan of Star Trek Deep Space 9. Even futher
back TNG as well and I even enjoyed Voyager. But it's been a
while since I've seen those. I should get a Nikita DVD box if that
is out.

The Larry Sanders Show was epic! Good call Charles!

I'm really getting into the new mini series 'Deadwood' on HBO.
The woman who plays Calamity Jane should get an emmy. All the performances are strong. Though I've never heard the F word used so much since I left the Army.

Yes I've been following Deadwood. That actress really is great. I mean, I've started walking around swearing in the office too. Pretty soon I'm going to accidentally call a client a cocksucker. Her name is Robin Wiegert. I became an instant fan in that episode when she was scared and blustering when Swearingen (what a great name) walked right through her to see the Norwegian girl.

The X-files, Early miami vice (michael mann), The soon to be released series "Millenium" (not sure on spelling here) Comes out July 20th. If you never saw it, check it out. It is like a really dark X-Files.

My personal favorite is ER. Unrivaled pacing and fairly involving characters--though, I have to say, I was disappointed by the finale of the otherwise impeccable Season 10, which was so riddled with cliffhangers, it seemed only to serve as an "out" for the producers in case they needed to take any of the stars off salary. (Upsettingly, the one main character who had no cliffhanger was the one to be let go--British actress Alex Kingston--in her words, because she had gotten "too old." What?)

Didn't know Alex had been "let go". Too bad. She's a cool lady.

Yes, and the episode where he does a mercy killing of the pastor with brain cancer was exceptionally poigniant. You could tell he actually respected and liked him and at the same time was extremely angry at God. all that in one brief but incredebly intense scene. Great stuff.

What I like is that all the characters have good and evil in them is this show and it gets shown. Swearingen several times has shown he is capable of great kindness and vulnerability, at the same time the ex sheriff has shown his capacity for extreme uncontrolled violence.

I wish there was more TV like this, and I have to admit, the cussing does give it a comedic edge at times.

I don't think I've seen a weak performance by anyone yet, even the guest stars.
