Re: Custom Eyecup for the C100

Some nice news from Andrew came into my email inbox today. Head on over to the Kickstarter link earlier in this thread to find out more.

EDIT: Might be easier if I just post the email contents here :-)

……………………..

First of all, thanks to everyone who has backed the project. This is really very cool. I'm super jazzed that we've been funded and that I will be enabled to provide us all with exquisite C-Cups. They're going to be a huge improvement over the existing eyecup, and I think you're all going to love them.

We reached our goal more than a week ago, and in the meantime I've been looking into ways I might sweeten the pot. I found one:

As the above video says, I'd like to send out a chamois with every C-Cup - and if we hit our $15,000 stretch goal I'll do it. So just as soon as you get this message, please post something. Give us a tweet, post it on facebook, or maybe pass it on to some camera ops you know.

C100 users are going to want to see it, and I'm looking forward to seeing what this Kickstarter does when we all make some noise at the same time!

…………………….

It's really true, I am not well. But the project is going as planned, no worries there.

That was the ugliest font that grabbed my eye when I opened the text tool - I just added a little purple. It is kind of Austin Powers, isn't it? And sorry I missed your earlier question here Darren about post-Kickstarter plans. I haven't thought that far ahead honestly. We're going to work on Kickstarter fulfillment immediately, but hopefully yes we will have some post KS sales plan in place by May.

Welcome aboard Edward! Thanks for sharing the post Andy!

Is it too late to order an eyecup?

No better time than now Glen! Still a few days left on the Kickstarter. I would add a link but my phone won't seem to allow me... its in this thread and I think you can just Google: Miller C100

Which is pretty cool!

How does the kickstarter work, does everyone who backs you get a c-cup?

John.

Hi John. Kickstarter works by offering incentives, which backers can choose depending on how much they donate. In this case I only have the one incentive (The C-Cup) and to choose that you have to donate at least $40 (add $8 if international shipping is required).

So in this case, everyone who backs the project for at least $40 will get a C-Cup.

Sounds like a good deal to me, i don't even have a c100 yet, just waiting till NAB starts before making a purchase :)

Woohoo, got my C100 earlier this week, loving it so far and actually was pleasantly surprised by the EVF, I've read so much bad press about it that I was expecting something much worse. Looking forward to getting my c-cup now :)

John.

Re: Custom Eyecup for the C100

That's just exactly how I felt John!

I just yesterday 3D printed the latest design, with some improvements. I requested one more change, and I expect we'll be placing an order with the manufacturer at the beginning of next week. I'll send out a detailed project update via KS once that is done, and hopefully we will have some hard dates for shipping by that time.

Thanks!

Excellent news! Can't wait to get mine - will need it as the sun is now shining in England so some outside shooting is called for ...when I get my C100 back (it's getting the Dual Pixel AF upgrade done this week).

If you're ever trying to follow people / things in unpredictable unrehearsed situations the AF can be a major benefit. I've only really had it screw up on me once, but to be fair that was user error, my fault, not that of the camera.

I've no regrets getting the upgrade done.

Re: Custom Eyecup for the C100

I received my C-Cup in the mail yesterday. Andrew did an amazing job with the design and engineering on this. It looks and feels like a high quality, polished product. It fits perfectly and securely. It's soft enough to be comfortable but still provides a solid third point of contact to help keep shots steady when shooting hand held. Overall I'm really impressed and think this is one of those must have accessories if you shoot on the C-100. Thanks Andrew for taking the time and effort to design and manufacture it and for getting it out on schedule!

Got mine in yesterday and was able to use it on a wedding shoot.... actually makes the C100 viable outdoors and works great as an additional point of contact!

Re: Custom Eyecup for the C100

Great to read these initial reports. Mine is en-route to the UK and I hope to have it very soon. Sounds like Andrew did a first class job - but I was always sure of that by the way he approached the whole project and how he kept us regularly updated/stayed focus on meeting his stated targets.

And then of course there was THAT video... See post #41...but that was the only time I got a little worried!!!

Only joking ;-)

It has completely replaced my Z-Finder. And, better still, it is always on the camera.

Mine is also enroute just in time to help in these sunnier days. How are you folk finding the EVF for focusing and exposure?

Tbh I've been depending in the LCD with a petrol sun shade on bright days but it's a struggle focusing. So I'm looking forward to trying Andrews C-cup. (That doesn't sound good!)

Andrew Alden Miller May 26th, 2014 09:29 AM

Re: Custom Eyecup for the C100

Very glad to hear that you guys are liking them and I can't wait for my overseas friends to join the party. Drew, I imagine you've heard enough from me on all this, but I'll just add that catching focus is really easy with the contrast cranked up a bit. I use the standard peaking settings on white, which I find much easier to use than red or blue or whatever. White peaking doesn't distract at all - it just looks like a contrasty image, and the plane of focus is ever-so-slightly highlighted. Give it a try!

As for exposure, I rely pretty heavily on zebras. As I said I've got my contrast cranked a bit, and depending on the scene and the profile, I can't always tell where things are landing. 100 IRE zebras outside is a great way to keep your bearings.

Thanks so much for seeing this through and delivering such a solid product!! Anyone want to buy my slightly used Z-Finder? Really!

Re: Custom Eyecup for the C100

just got and fitted mine. feels very solid, snug as heck. the ziptie is a nice addition though don't see myself using it.

it is a bit of a pain to get on though, even moreso for the chamois, but if you plan on having it live on your camera than it's not a big deal.

overall it's indeed an improvement for the c100, but i wish andrew would have went for the more traditional oval/recessed shape. i have to tilt my head a decent bit to get full contact. could just be my head shape though.YMMV. There's enough material i'll probably trim a bit of the left side to get a better face match.

Good work andrew. this is my first kickstarter delivery

Hi Bill. We haven't received a survey response from you with your address. Please complete the survey on Kickstarter and I'll get one to the post office tomorrow.

You should be receiving emails with project updates and survey requests and reminders from Kickstarter - have you not been getting these?

No :( I just went into Kickstarter and verified my address for you. You would think Kickstarter would send you an e-mail or something. I guess I'll have to tell Jennifer Lawrence, Al Pacino, Meryl Streep and my 200 extras to to find something to do until my C-cup arrives...

Looks like they're coming to the UK on a donkey! It made it from Austin TX to Chicago so far. Hope that donkey can fly :)

Re: Custom Eyecup for the C100

Hey Dave. The USPS international tracking isn't very good or detailed, but it looks like they are just now starting to land in the UK and Europe. Tracking often just moves from Chicago to "Delivered," and hopefully that will be the status of your package soon.

All the Kickstarter packages went out just before a holiday here, so the mail system was down for two days just after I shipped. We're sitting at just over one week right now, and as I said they are starting to reach people's doorsteps. That ain't bad. I just expedited a C-Cup to Italy, which is going to take about a week, and that cost $88. Since Kickstarter only allows one price for international shipping, I decided most folks would rather go for $8 than $88+ even if they have to sit tight another day or two.

Anyway, they should be arriving soon, my international friends. I hope you like them. Please let me know what you think.

Mine arrived this morning here in England!

I had to go to my local Royal Mail Post Office to pay £12.73 (£4.73 VAT and £8 Admin Charge) before they would release it - but no worries.

I'm very pleased with it. Can't wait to try it out in anger on a sunny day...sun is forecast round here tomorrow :-)
