Looking for the Tokina 11-16 f2.8

I hear so much about this lens and I'm trying to get one but cant find it in stock anywhere. Anyone know where they have it??? Tried all the regular places with no success!!!

Brian Brown March 25th, 2010 03:06 PM

It's "unobtainium" for sure. Seems they can't make 'em fast enough for Canon shooters. Best chance is to get on an auto-notify list or pre-order.

I got tired of waiting myself for the 11-16 and ordered a Tamron 17-50/2.8 VC this morning. Hardly the same lens, but a good stop gap for me.

Kin Lau March 25th, 2010 03:27 PM

Tokina just can't keep up with the demand. I got mine used of Ebay.

Liam Hall March 25th, 2010 03:28 PM

It's definitely worth reserving one. The supplies come regularly, but sell out fast. Well worth the trouble though, the lens is super sharp.

Steve Witt March 25th, 2010 03:33 PM

I put myself on the BH notification list.....but I think half the 7D owners in the world have too....wish they would accept downpayment or something to assure I get one but I understand that they won't.

Jon Braeley March 25th, 2010 05:19 PM

B & H is still the best bet. Just keep checking in with them - thats what I did 3 months ago, and suddenly they are instock .... and then out of stock!! It's like waiting beside an ice hole trying to catch a fish!

Corey Benoit March 26th, 2010 07:10 PM

The Tamron 17-50mm is the sharpest of the three for a general purpose lens. The Tokina is nearly impossible to get. The 17-85mm Canon is a discontinued lens..replaced by the new 15-85mm.

Corey Benoit March 27th, 2010 12:52 AM

i found a new one on b&h and they have a used one for 329 in a 9 condition....

is the new 15-85mm a better buy than the other 2 wide lenses?

Stan Chase March 27th, 2010 12:13 PM

The Canon 15-85 has variable aperture but is wider and longer than the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. If you really need the ultra wide angle of the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 and have found one in stock, then that's what you should get. Canon makes a 10-22 variable aperture in the same price range. My personal favorite is the Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS.

Kin Lau March 27th, 2010 12:45 PM

Sigma also has a 10-20mm with a constant 3.5 aperture, it's an update of the 10-20/4-5.6. It seems to be more available, but it's more expensive than the Tokina.

Mike Dulay March 27th, 2010 05:37 PM

I took a chance and bought it from Ebay. Granted no warranty but the canon mount is just much harder to find. As I write this I see three international sellers, which is even more of a risk.

Paul Frederick March 28th, 2010 06:19 PM

I bought mine here a month ago:
Tokina AT-X AF 11-16mm 2.8 PRO DX Zoom Digital Camera Lens for Canon EOS - Canoga Camera
It was in stock at the time when NO ONE else had it! Looks like it is temporarily out now though. Plus the price is $599 and free shipping! VERY good experience ordering from them, complete with an associate calling me up (after online ordering) to verify everything. Highly recommend Canoga camera now!

Jon Braeley March 29th, 2010 06:36 AM

I have used many of the "chinese" ebay sellers for accessories - step down rings, filters, etc and it's been fine. They offer free shipping usually but this does take 3 weeks or so. Some are Hong Kong some are mainland.
A friend ordered a Canon lens and it arrived no problem - in Japanese packaging. Check with paypal to see of you are covered by them first.

Bruce Buttery April 1st, 2010 11:49 AM

bought mine from these guys
http://www.ogt-clan.com/ (ebay seller)

took less than 96 hours from japan to south africa

great lens dont know what i did without it

John Richard April 4th, 2010 07:00 AM

They are back in stock at Canoga Camera again. Pre-ordered on early in last week and it shipped out a few days later. Luck timing? Thanks to the prior poster on the Canoga Camera lead!!! Had been searching all over.

Steve Witt April 4th, 2010 04:08 PM

Well, I ordered on from Conoga Camera earlier today, after I saw John Richard's post. I felt good ordering but was a tiny bit suspicious about how they became avialable to them and not to other online camera store sites. I will keep everyone posted.

John Richard April 5th, 2010 08:35 AM

I wouldn't worry - Canoga Camera has been around a long time and they are a physical brick and mortar store with a good rep.

Just tracked my order and it will be delivered this morning some time.

I think the fact that they move a lot of volume for Tokina makes them a priority distributor?

The nice thing is that I almost gave up and fell for those guys holding their small stock and selling at premium prices. Canoga continues to sell at the manufacturer's suggested price.

Paul Frederick April 5th, 2010 08:37 AM

Glad it worked out for you John. Hope it does for you too Steve. I'm not sure how they are getting them but I can say mine was brand new and works GREAT!

Steve Witt April 5th, 2010 12:17 PM

They are sold out again. I have a simple theory on how Canoga Camera got the Tokina 11-16's before others (like B&H and Adorama). Its because the US distribution center for Tokina lenses is located in California and so is Canoga. Maybe thats why and maybe not but I got my order in before they showed sold out again so maybe I'm in luck. Thanks again for the tip Paul Frederick and John Richard.

Steve Witt April 5th, 2010 07:44 PM

Conoga Camera updated my order status to "Shipped" with a UPS tracking number. If you think that I am happy....you are correct.

Chuck Spaulding April 7th, 2010 06:37 PM

Did you receive it yet? Are you still happy?

Steve Witt April 7th, 2010 07:01 PM

The UPS tracking info is saying it will be here on Friday the 9th. I'll post an updade when it arrives. So far so good.

John Mastrogiacomo April 7th, 2010 10:49 PM

Got mine today from Canoga. Nice lens.

Steve Witt April 9th, 2010 06:26 AM

Ok, my UPS tracking number says it has arrived to my town and is out for delivery. I'm excited!

On a side note....These lenses are currently showing IN Stock at B&H!!! (at the time of this writing)

Jerry Porter April 9th, 2010 06:57 AM

Thank you Steve mine should be here Tuesday from B&H $607.00 Shipped.

Steve Witt April 9th, 2010 09:21 PM

I have now received my Tokina 11-16 2.8 from CanogaCamera.com and I am very happy. Thanks all.

Jerry Porter April 9th, 2010 09:26 PM

Thank you STEVE!! They are already out of stock at B&H Mine shows it has shipped and will be here on Tuesday!!!!

Steve Witt April 9th, 2010 10:13 PM

Congratulations Jerry, Glad I was able to help you like others helped me. Enjoy it when you get it, it is supposed to be a superb lens!

Daniel Weber April 10th, 2010 09:57 PM

This is a nice lens. I was able to find one at my local dealer when no one else had them in stock. It was also $599. The dealer didn't know much about the lens, it seems they some how ended up with one and it was sitting in the display case when I came in to test out a 7D. I like the lens alot, though my favorite lens is the Canon 17-55 2.8 IS.

There's a Hong Kong seller on ebay right now that has 10 available. They're running about 710 USD. For people who have used this lens, at the 11mm end, does the picture have much distortion?

Alan Halfhill April 12th, 2010 08:17 PM

Tokina

I was really interested in that lens until I could not find one. I just ordered the EFS 10-22 instead. Both are really good lenses from what I have read.

I just received one that I ordered from a hong kong ebay seller. I was a little worried that I might end up getting scammed, but the lens arrived in 5 days in seemingly new condition (the box was slightly beat up, but the lens is flawless). I paid $695 US.. I realize its more than B&H but I couldn't wait as I need it for a trip I'm leaving on. I doubt it would be covered by any type of US warranty, but thats a chance I'm willing to take..

I can't comment on the distortion at 11mm, but theres lots of reviews of this lens available on the web.

Dan Penner April 14th, 2010 09:37 PM

I walked into my local independent shop galaxy camera in ottawa and they had 4-5 tokinas for canon mounts, came out to 860$ total taxes included.....could not be happier with the lens :)

Lucky Haskins April 17th, 2010 11:32 PM

Just Received Mine From B&H

I should have bought a lottery ticket on the same day. I had the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 on my wish list. I happened to be getting some other stuff, saw that it was apparently in stock and ordered it. A day after I ordered...out of stock again. Go figure. (Great glass by the way)

Steven Fokkinga April 19th, 2010 01:37 AM

There are also some used ones on ebay right now... (as well as some new ones)

Subbu Vedula April 22nd, 2010 01:39 PM

Below have it in stock:
www.photozoneonline.com $649
www.nelsonphotosupplies.com $629
have them when I looked today.

Also the Backscatter had it for $609 when I ordered this afternoon

Subbu

Craig Terott April 22nd, 2010 09:26 PM

I got my lens (11-16mm) 2 days ago (I overpaid). One thing I like about it, is that it's real easy to get flares with it. I want an occasional flare or two in my videos, so I consider it a bonus.

Neither had in stock when I called. Tempted, but still wary, to order from overseas through eBay.

P.S. Just ordered on eBay through Taiwanese dealer Shuheido, who seemed to have good feedback. $614 + $59 shipping. Hope I don't live to regret this ;)
