Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM / EX DC HSM

I bought one of these for my EOS 60D, since I had been using it with vintage lenses and the shortest focal length in the collection is 28mm (44.8mm equivalent with 1.6 crop factor), so not very wide. Also to give the convenience of not having to keep changing lenses in some circumstances.

I'm disappointed, it seems quite soft and infinity focus isn't, by that I mean if I manually set the focus to infinity, nothing at any distance is in focus. I expected it to be a little less good than my vintage primes, but it is no better than the also-rans that I can't bring myself to chuck out. Certainly not acceptable to me.

I was wondering if anyone else here has one of these and whether you find it any better than I do.
