Canon Elevates "Status" of 5D MKIV at DVinfo.net

My CPS news letter came a few days ago and in the body of the e-mail Canon referred to the 5D MK IV as their "Flagship DSLR". Yes it is just marketing terminology but it does speak to a change in the market.

One, I suspect sales of the true Flagship EOS 1D series must be very slow and only hard core pros that can afford the steep increase are going there and almost always will buy that line. I know because once upon a time I was one of them in still world.

This is how far the 5D has come. The original 5D was not a pro level camera. It was barely a prosumer camera. It was mostly shunned by professional still shooters of the day. If used at all it was kept in the kit for backup only purposes. At that time Canon marketed the 5D to very serious photo enthusiasts or those who had a lot of disposable income and always buy something in an expensive range.

Then came the addition of video acquisition by the DSLR. A new "feature" to increase sales of the 5D. Another unexpected revolution was accidentally started by Canon and the rest is history.

The 5D is a Flagship DSLR now? I wonder what my old contemporaries are saying about that? Some of them still shoot with EOS 1D bodys and never roll a frame of video. They have to pay for it because its there but it serves no purpose for them. One more price the dying bread of still only shooters are paying. All I can say is thank god I kept up with technology and transitioned to video a long time ago. I can say without ego that at one time I shot stills with the best in sports photography. My still cameras took me around the world a couple of times. The only reason I mention that is because today I rarely even mention my past still experience to clients. I quit pursuing it as a revenue source a long time ago. Why would I get that far and walk away from it? Short answer is no one is willing to pay for stills anymore at the rates that used support my family well. Bottom line.....always try to pay attention to what future markets may change into.
