Optura pi carrier delay--repair? at DVinfo.net

The tape carrier on my Optura pi is not retracting in a "timely fashion." The problem, somewhat sporadic, has grown from an extra delay of 10 seconds to as long as a day or more, i.e., I close the tape carrier, with or without a tape, and wait for it to automatically retract. Yes, it actually closed on it's own after over a day on the shelf. The battery is fully charged.

My question is, is this mechanism controlled by something simple that won't require a major repair fee, or would it be part of a whole circuit board replacement or something?
Since I bought the camera for about $600 refurb, I would prefer not to spend too much more than $100; but an upgrade is not in the picture at this time. My principal camera is a GL-1, the Optura is for wide lockdowns, etc.

Any repair center recommendation info, including web links, would also be appreciated. I'm in Virginia, if it makes any difference.

You will need to talk to Canon to see if it can repaired economically. To get the process started go to Canon USA's consumer website and click on Support. But honestly, I think Canon will quote you at least US$250 - probably more. It might be more cost effective to buy another camcorder. But you never know.

I'm surprised you still have one that was still working! The Optura Pi's were introduced in 2000.

The tape carrier and load/threading mechanism is the only component which uses sliding parts in guides. Some use nylon buffer pieces which are sort of self-lubing. With time, any lube used on the sliding surfaces hardens and dries and parts no longer slide but bind. With nylon surfaces, dust and grit can become embedded and also bind.

Persevere without getting it fixed and you will likely burn out the motor or the circuit which supplies its power.

Yes. It will cost to have the mechanism serviced but if you decide for this and a professional head clean, you may be well glad you did.

For any interested, one of Canon's recommended servicers, in NJ, fixed the tape carrier as well as a color balance problem for about $110.
