Any of you own (or have owed) a Canon GL-1?

I was wondering how the shooting quality compares in SD mode between the 2 models?

Are there any areas the HV-40 outshines the GL-2 specifically in the area of SD?

Can one get a similiar degree of "warmth" color and vibrancywise out of the HV-40 that pretty much comes automatically/standard out of the GL-2?

Optically how do the lens compare?

Thanks for participating in thos query.

I owned both the GL1 and GL2 and loved them. The quality is outstaning on them both, a little more with the GL2. I am now running HD cams...XH A1 and HV30. The HV30 / 40 is HD as you know, so that's better right there. I don't use my HV30 in SD. I never shoot in SD anymore. HV series is smaller, palm of your hand small. I like that. HD suffers more in low light, as HD relies on light to function. I have shot some footage in lower light in the house at night and it looks bad via HD...like bad VHS copy bad. SD cams don't rely on light "as much" as HD does.

Same here - I owned the GL1 and GL2, and I agree - I only video tape things in HDV now - looks amazing ( I own HV10's and HV30's ). The quality is so much better than SD, so I can't really anwser. But I'm guessing that based on previous Canon models I've mixed footage with that you could get close enough depending on what you are videotaping.

Steve,

Did you ever have the opportunity or need to color match a GL-2 and the XH-A1?

I need to do so because I'm using both of them Saturday in a shoot.

The A1 color looks flat compared to the GL-2 as the GL has a warm magenta pull which I like!
