G10 discontinued?
I called a specialist camera/video store last week to ask about availability of the G10. They're very reputable and have been in business a long time, servicing "consumers" "Prosumers" and "Pros" alike.
They didn't have any in stock and said they wouldn't be getting any as they'd received notice from Canon that they were discontinued as of 11 February. I checked on the net, as you do, and couldn't find anything to support that. Has anyone here heard anything? The reason I'm asking is that I'd hate to buy one now to find a new and improved version on sale in March (for the same price!). Cheers. |

Re: G10 discontinued?
Still on the Canon web page as a current product.
Still in stock on the B&H web page. No press releases announcing a new camcorder in the G10 class from Canon recently. The G10 was announced on January 2011 I would be surprised to see it discontinued after a year, but I have no insider info and stranger things have happened.. I would look for confirmation from other dealers. And given how fast technology changes, never buy a piece of hi-tech gear until you need it.

Re: G10 discontinued?
Might give B&H a call. They seem to be first in line when it comes to news and product. One of the guys there told me that B&H is the largest Canon reseller in the world (and I believe it). I called them with some questions about the XA10 last year and they were able to give me insight when they would be arriving and answer some other questions. Maybe it depends who you get on the phone too. See what they say.
Frankly, it wouldn't be a bad thing if they re-did the G10 (and XA10 too). The G10 would be a much better camera with just a few minor additions like installing the same cold shoe the XA10 uses onto the G10. That one feature alone would make the G10 a much more usable cam. A $1,500 camcorder should have a 'real' and sturdy cold shoe in my mind. A real rocker zoom on both cameras would be another item that would vastly improve the zoom control. Even a small but sensitive finger rocker like the HV30/40 had would be a great improvement IMO. And while they're at it, how about making them both record PROGRESSIVE video and add an automatic audio limiting feature on the XA10 XLR mic inputs to prevent blowing out unexpected loud audio. Many of the larger handhelds have had this for years. Then you'll have what might be the 'perfect' cam. Well, I don't want it to seem like I'm complaining. They are great camcorders already, but if they did do some updating, any of these few updates would would make them even more attractive camcorders.

Re: G10 discontinued?
Thanks for the replies. I checked with another "specialist" dealer and they hadn't heard anything.
