I totally agree. Having said that, the low light comparison (the pic with the snooker table) was a lot clearer on the HV20. The HC7 was very noisy. I'd love to see the original video of those caps.

Leila Alkadi March 25th, 2007 09:03 PM

Although I returned both the HC7 and the HV20, my vote
would definitely go to the HV20.

The HV20's pictures(video or still photo) had a lot less noise
when compared side-by-side in low-light situations. The room
where I did the comparison only had one 100W bulb.

HV20 Clip (24p) FULL RES 1920x1080

http://447productions.com/HV20_24p_1920x1080.mov (115mb)

here it is.... before posting this link, I downloaded it from the above link onto my 13" Macbook, which is alot smaller then the "Actual" size of the QT movie. It looked alot more pixelated the the same QT file on my desktop, even at that size.

After 8 minutes or so it was downloaded, and I clicked on the screen which the movie on it and right clicked to get a small dropdown window which gave me a few options. I selected "SAVE AS QUICKTIME MOVIE" onto my desktop and when I double clicked the newly saved movie, everything was exactly as the original file that I uploaded. And of course for those with a smaller screen, the best option is under the Quicktime menu, View as "Half Size." From there, I suppose DVI out to a larger 1080 HDTV? Hope this helps.

Even better full res ...

Taylor,
...very good PF24 example. Thanks for posting. Alan

New HV10 footage - low light and digital zoom

Wow! Have you noticed how many people are viewing this corner of the DV Info right now, 47 at the time of posting!

I guess it must be all the interest in the HV20

Anyway, here is another sample from the HV10

Do you have a shot taken with fully open aperture? I'd really like to know how shallow a depth of field is possible with the HV20.
Best,

depth of field

haven't done any shots where i'm controlling aperture, but this clip i shot shows some pretty good DOF at least when zoomed in a bit

What are the best settings for low light situations? Thanks!

Barlow Elton March 28th, 2007 12:09 PM

Nice job, Taylor. I like how the cam is handling the hotspot on the house/duplex on the right side of the frame.

There's an interesting quality to the progressive look of this material. It's detailed, but very smooth. No edge enhancement that I can discern.

I can't believe this is possible now in a $1K cam.

Ridiculous. :)

HV10 footage, HDV v DVCPRO HD comparison

I made a short film (2min) and sequenced in both HDV and DVCPRO HD. Made in Compressor using H.264 LAN tweaked. The difs aren't noticeable to me colorwise.

One odd thing was having to change the aspect ratio of the photos to match the look after copying the HDV sequence into the DVCPRO HD sequence.

It was shot in crappy light, I believe shutter speed of 30. There's a bit of gain, but wonder what I can do to make colors more vibrant.

I just have to say...I love your work man!

Good stuff. To get that sun shot, did you dial back the exposure using the dial to get the black background?

Very neat.

Doug Thome March 28th, 2007 06:07 PM

I can't view it on my Vista w/qtpro...apple says its intermediate codec and looks like thats mac only? Help....

Justin Avery March 28th, 2007 06:37 PM

Great footage, yet again.

I'm counting down the days before I buy the HV10 for my Round the World adventure, need to buy it within 30 days of travel to get it duty and GST free!

I'm interested to hear what settings were used also, were you using any filters for this shot?

Great detail considering you were using digital zoom as well.

Canon HV20 Bird Movie Clip.

Here is a very short sample clip of a bird in a pine tree I shot the other day.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=998OGGI2

As you can tell, I am not even close to going pro. :)

The video was shot in 1440X1080i, captured and cut with PP2.0 then rendered.

I think the bird is a little overexposed, which I could have fixed in the camera settings.

Hmmm. I am not sure why not.

I am using firefox and I can download it.

Maybe I can try to host it up somewhere else.

Yes. That was shot in P mode, full auto.

Rich Dykmans March 29th, 2007 08:37 AM

You can't improve color by transcoding HDV to another codec but the color will hold up better when you do CC later. If you want your HDV colors to "pop" learn the 3 way color corrector in FCP (which I know you're using) or better yet invest in the colorista plugin from Magic Bullet. It works wonders on HDV. I rarely had to do much CC'ing on my HVX200 DVCPro footage but a 1 chip just doesn't capture color like a good 3 chip cam obviously. HV10 footage once tweaked intercuts fairly well with DVCPro.

HV20 - Tokyo Footage

4 Attachment(s)
I really wanted to get the Panny SD1.

I prefer SD cards to HDD and most certainly, tape. However, editing is still a problem and it seems that HDV is ahead of AVCHD in terms of picture quality.

So, yesterday morning I headed over to Yodobashi Camera in Shinjuku (Tokyo) and picked up the Canon HV20. It helped that my work place is practically next door.

Fortunately, I had some time in the afternoon so I charged up the battery and took it out into the streets of Nishi-Shinjuku and started shooting random stuff. I brought my monopod along and that helped reduce "the shakes."

I also shot some stuff later that night (around 10 p.m.).

I forgot to ask the guy at the store to see if he could get me a copy of the English manual (I have the English version on my computer) so, regretfully, all the footage was shot in full auto.

I'll let you be the judge. As I'm typing this it's uploading to RapidShare.com -- a one minute video at about 65 MB. My computer is a single core P4 2.8 gHz with a gig of ram. It plays the file fine in WMV. I had to dumb it down a little to get it to fit the RS 100 MB limit.

It does seem like it's 1440x1080 instead of 1920x1080. Must have made a wrong turn somewhere. Still, I have to say, I'm stoked. I love the high resolution. The colors seem a bit soft but not too bad. There's some blurring but I'm 99.9% sure this is pilot error.

This is the first time I've shot, edited and encoded HDV. All in all, not bad for a first effort, I think. I use Vegas 7.0 and, keeping it simple, it's just about as easy to edit HDV as regular DV. Pleasantly surprised by that. No other software involved -- just Vegas right out of the box.

This cam cost me 107,300 yen out the door so I guess that's around a 1000 USD. With about 25,000 yen added to the "Points Card" I was able to get an extra battery and an HDV tape and still have points left over.

Now, this isn't the best example I've seen of what this little cam can do, but I'm a happy camper. I figure with a little more study I can start shooting in the 24p mode and I'm really looking forward to seeing how that looks. I think this camera has a lot of potential.

While I hope this is my last tape-based camera, I'm really glad I bought it.

I couldn't help but include some photos of the "unpacking" ritual complete with a camera girl :)

OK, here's the link to the vid:

Ken Ross March 29th, 2007 08:14 PM

Randall, looks very nice, but when I play it on WMP or MP Classic, it seems the footage is vertically squished a bit. Somehow the aspect ratio just looks a bit off. Any ideas?

Robert Hicks March 29th, 2007 08:32 PM

This is amazingly clear footage. Thank you very much for posting.

I do agree with Ken. It's just a tad squished when using windows media player.

Got any more? :)

Glen Kim March 29th, 2007 11:13 PM

It'd be great if you could get some clips of the cherry blossoms! Shinjuku Gyoen is beautiful this time of year!

Actually, I think Tokyo is a great city to shoot video. There are lots of things going on both during the day and at night.

I'm hoping to go to Tokyo Disneyland this month and get some HV20 clips. I'll try to post good ones. :)

Elmer Lang March 30th, 2007 10:20 AM

Thanks for the tip.

The HV10's fun, of course, now I want to sell my HV10 and get the HV20. Better lowlight, mic input, yadda yadda. I hope to find a buyer soon, it's only got ~10 hours on the heads. Maybe Ebay's the place.

Elmer Lang March 31st, 2007 02:44 PM

Actually, I think it's ~15 hours on the heads.

HV20 snow globe clip

I've included the source .m2t file as well as a 960x540 H264 movie which I compressed at 75% quality. On the .mov file, I removed the pull down in AE, used the Magic Bullet deartifactor, resized and adjusted the levels a little bit.

Shot it at either F1.8 or F2.0.

David Garvin March 31st, 2007 11:04 PM

Not a Pro shot just handheld...
Huge story behind it but you'll get the Jist...

Brad Vaughan April 1st, 2007 06:36 PM

For some reason the Quicktime movie isn't recognized by my Quicktime installation. Do I need a special codec to view it?

And the wmv version stops playing at about 33 secs into it.

Great story..

..very creative for 12X12. Really nice light and color on the flowers. I'm thinking of getting a bogen monopod and video head for my HV20 as though haven't used one much before, it is just so portable might try to ditch the tripod.

Regards, Alan

Brad Vaughan April 1st, 2007 11:06 PM

yep got it.

Maybe next time wait til they are uploaded b4 you post the links. That way we will know when they are ready on our end and we won't waste the time d/loading unfinished files.

Tokyo Footage - Part II

A couple of days ago I posted a link to some footage taken in Shinjuku (Tokyo). Glen Kim suggested I get over to Shinjuku Gyoen to get some footage of the cherry blossoms as they are now in full bloom (good idea, Glen!).

Well, someone told me that the place would be closed by the time I got off work but I heard about another place that, according to my source, was even better.

When I got there, I thought I'd made a wrong turn and ended up at Disneyland -- the line was looooong. But I persevered and finally got to the entrance. It was along a river and very narrow and people were packed in like sardines. I didn't think there would be enough space to set up my tripod.

Japanese people really take their cherry blossom viewing seriously!

Across the street was Yasukuni and it looked like something was going on over there so I decided to check it out. Turned out to be a mini-festival that one might compare to a county fair in the U.S.

I managed to get a little footage there before it started to rain. No matter, I can only upload about a minute's worth of HD video anyway, so here it is:

http://rapidshare.com/files/23992389...uku_2.wmv.html

This was taken with the HV20 and this time I encoded it a bit differently and it didn't come out "squished" like before.

I know I started out shooting in the "night" mode and I can't recall right now if I changed it. It does appear the shutter speed needs to be increased to avoid the blurring. That may sound elementary to most people but I've never shot before in anything other than full auto! This camera is going to make me change my ways.

Theoretically, you need a 3.0 gHz machine to view this video in WMV. Mine's 2.8 gHz and it plays just fine.

PS - I love this friggin' camera!

Eric Gorski April 2nd, 2007 11:59 PM

wow, wes. those clips are fantastic.

seeing this camera at work in a softly lit environment really shows off what its capable of. its nice to see that the transition between the bright window and the shadowy interior is smooth and without a harsh digital fringing.. plus the interior shadows still contain a nice amount of detail without everything else being too blown out. nice dynamic range i must say.

not to mention the detail is excellent. that cat's fur.. so soft..

Wes Vasher April 3rd, 2007 08:27 PM

Thanks Eric! The color, image detail, manual controls continue to impress me. The dynamic range is better than what I'm used to with my old Sony DV camera so I'm happy with that as well.

Daymon Hoffman April 4th, 2007 12:31 AM

ggrrr! I"m so jealous. Really sick of being the last at everything here down under. really wish companies would stop reaming us (both in price and release dates) when it comes to new releases. ARGH!

I... WANT ONE!

:)

Daymon Hoffman April 4th, 2007 12:55 AM

Thanks for the samples! Gosh i'm getting really angry at company's atm. Sick of getting shafted here in Australia. We're the last to get anything and we pay extreme dollar for that privelage! :(

Still not on Canon\'s AU website. *sigh*
