Low light HV20 footage
This is some stuff ive shot over the past three weeks..
The first is low light/indoor. My settings were kind of off on the camera, i should of been letting in more light. http://road82.com/MOV/BenZepplinCAT.wmv The second EYE shot was outside. http://blip.tv/file/get/Road82-highDefEyerBall135.mov I think this was all shot non 24p. |
Not bad, would like to see more examples of low/normal indoor lighting footage to get more of a feel for HV20's capabilities..
|
here's some lower light stuff at a comedy club

High quality 1280 x 720 will be up later tomorrow http://www.lousyheros.com/pics/hv101.jpg http://www.lousyheros.com/pics/hv102.jpg Couple screencaps :) |
Nice work Joe! You've done a brilliant job with the editing. Love the strobe style edits. What editing software are you using? The fast shutter speed works well too.
If anything, I think a few levels adjustments would make a huge difference to the overall look. Bring out more of the colours. I normally use a histogram for checking how much adjustment needs to be made. |
Vegas 7.0e
I did some slight saturation boosting but that's really it.. These are just practice vids, stuff I go and film, edit, and work on improving each time :) |
Cool, I figured it must have been Vegas due to the edits with the pans and crops.

Some footage with HV20 and Brevis
Here is a link to footage for short I'm working on at the moment. Shot with HV20, Brevis, and 28mm/50mm canon FD lens. Most of the shots are done in the evening with little to no lighting.
Im still learning a lot, but its coming together! http://www.cinevate.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=782 |
Looks quite nice. The hand held movement appears quite natural too.

Canon HV20 Sample Video at the Park
Here's my first quick test video I shot in 24p. didn't do a pull down to extract the 24p. I need to get Cineform to do that but I shot it in 24p so I could do it later. Edited it in PP2 and then exported in same aspect ratio as a compressed .wmv and uploaded to youtube. I'll try to get the higher res version up on the web so people can look at it. Even compressed on youtube it doesn't look too bad.

HV20 Circus footage.
Well, not really a circus...
This was filmed on Alberta St in Portland, Oregon. BOTH files are the same. One big one small. The smaller one has some artifacts and losses some richness in color due to low bit rate. BIG - 111mb 1280 x 720 http://blip.tv/file/get/Road82-ablertaStBIG565.wmv SMALL - 15.7mb 800x450 http://blip.tv/file/get/Road82-AlbertaSt666.wmv The Accordion player is part of www.autopilotisforlovers.com The circus people can be found at www.cirkuspandemonium.net This was all filmed on Alberta St except for the two birds. They were hanging out under the Fremont bridge. And the PGE park van was filmed downtown. I dont know those people. Well, i do now that i filmed them. Didnt mean to make this into an advertisment of sorts. Shot in Standard High Def. Shutter priority more 100fps? On a monopod mostly and i believe i had a "shade" setting. |
It seems it`s just me that are not able to download Ricardos`s files.
Caramba, mermão, não consigo downloudá seu material. E não tenho a menor idéia do porquê. Seria uma novíssima versão do QT? Eu definitivamente não tenho tido esse problema. Abraço Ron |

Baby Dove clip
Just a little fella I filmed who was sitting on the tree next door a couple of days ago. Shot in 25P, Cinemode, full zoom, hand held, OIS on, with a slight levels adjustment and some minor sharpening in Vegas 7. WMV9 (which leaves a lot to be desired), 17mb.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ZQJY7Q5E This is a native Australian dove by the way, not like the white peace doves. |
Great video!
wow, I really liked the way this looked. Beautiful shot. The colors were very nice. Amazing what this camera can do! Thanks for the post :)

Looks great, you're happy with the camera?
|
I love it so far! I haven't got to shoot a whole lot with it but so far I'm blown away at the quality. I'm in the middle of editing the last project I shot with my GL2's. After I'm done with this project I'll have more time to start shooting in HD with they HV20. I'm selling both my Canon GL2's as we speak because it's time to upgrade to HD and this camera will suite my needs and best of all it's in my budget! Besides I want to get rid of the GL2's while there's still a demand for them. But IMO I'm happy to downgrade so to speak in the eyes of some people to the HV20 from the GL2's because I personally think the quality is far superior. I could care less that it only has one CCD sensor compared to the 3 in the GL2, the quality of video is undeniable. I haven't done much low light comparison, I think the GL2's do do better in low light but when the final video size is 1/3 the size of the HV20 and in almost all other situations the HV20 produces a Far superior picture, it's a no brainer switch for me. The only reason i would hesitate is if I was doing weddings or something and was going to be embarrassed by it's small size. luckily all my video projects are for DVDs and my clients don't care what I use as long as the final product looks good.
I did render that video in 24p which everyone is RAVING about on here but to be honest, I couldn't really tell any difference. I watched the video before pull down and after and they really looked so close I'm not sure I can see any difference. haha so yeah to answer your question, I love it so far. I've watched the high resolution copy of the video you just downloaded over and over and I still get blown away at the leaves blowing in the wind and the clarity of the white geese. pretty amazing! Scott |
Hi Martin
that was non24p. Standard High Defination And i didnnt have the settings on Cinema mode, it wasShutter priority (TV). t |
Yeah, the GL2 is a great camera. I had the PAL version XM2 myself. Probably the thing i miss the most would be the 20x zoom. Still I guess some HV20 footage could be cropped to emulate a 20x zoom at DV resolution! Or pay a lot extra and get an XHA1 which has the 20x zoom. A better camera for sure, but I've noticed purple fringing in a lot of XHA1 footage I've seen and the 24F just doesn't seem as sharp as 24P or 25P on the HV20.
By the way, I love your duck and geese shots. They are geese, right? |
Great looking footage. Did you just use one camera? If so, great work syncing up the vocals in the different shots there.

My 5 minute short - HV20/Brevis
This 5 minute edited piece is part of a larger 20min capstone project for my school. I shot with the HV20, Brevis35 HD imaging bundle, and Canon FD f2 28mm, f1.4 50mm lenses.
In terms of editing, there was only one shot with color correction, and it was the exterior shot outside that I put a warmish glow to it. Other than that it was all from the Brevis/HV20 Its about a student dealing with depression, girls, social anxiety, basically whatever you think would constitute a hard time in a persons life...its not exactly revealed. It was my first real project as a filmmaker/directer. As a crew of myself it was very difficult to light in the amount of time I had, but I think it worked out for the most part. I wanted to have a documentary/home movie feel to the project, and I think I was successful in that. It was a personal project as well, because a lot of the scenes are reflections of memories I had during that year. Scenes From the Worst Year of My Life 720x480 .WMV 155mb Scenes From the Worst Year of My Life 360x240 QT 17mb (Only watch this small one if you really have to, the other one looks much better!!) |
Matthew, not at all bad for a first effort. I like a lot of the angles you used to help tell the story.
|
This looks great. I really like it. Out of focus in parts and inconsistant colour, but still a lot better than I'm sure it would have looked without the Brevis. Seems like a decent short too. No idea what's troubling him the most, but seems authentic enough. Nice one.
Will you be posting the completed 20 minute version anytime? |
Squaw Valley video
Hi all,
here is an h.264 version (62 MB) of the video I shot at Squaw Valley in California with my HV20 at 1080/60i. DVD quality at 480p: http://www.gnomefiles.org/files/squaw-480p.mp4 (do a "save as") YouTube version in QVGA resolution here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esd1-R8_Mnc Sorry for some non-steady pans btw, our tripod needed greasing... I used the "JES DeInterlacer" free utility to de-interlace the 6 GB video (source was in Apple's Intermediate Codec .mov format) and Quicktime to re-encode it, but if you look closely at the first few minutes there is a slight "twitch" appearing every second in the screen. Any idea why is that? I tried encoding with and without de-interlacing, with automatic or at 24 or 29.976 keyframe interval, but Quicktime Pro will always produce this little "twitch" in the picture (sometimes more visibly than other times). I wonder if it's a bug of QT or my fault... |

peace n luv Martin |
this is regular 60i, in Tv mode @ 1/100. i shot with the cloudy WB, and custom presets contrast +1, bright -1, there is no color correction, nor did i deinterlace this particular clip. this is not using cine mode, personally i don't like the look of the cine mode, it's too soft for my liking. i edit using final cut pro.

thanx for the answer to all my questions appreciate the time given to answer them and thanx for showing your great footage with us again
