Which adapted size gives best options...

I went to the local cord camera store today and purchased a 52mm step up ring and filter for my hv20, I then found a simple retractable hood for it that does pretty well at keeping the side light out. I am trying to find out what the best size adapter ring for this camera is. I see many things made in 52mm but after trying one of the telephoto lenses in that size found it didn't work to well. Do i need to make sure the lenses are the ones specifically made for this camera and just use only filters in that size? Any advice on this issue would be welcomed.
