Having problems getting my HV-10 to talk with my Sony DVD recorder

HDV noob here, also first post.

I recently purchased an HV-10 and so far love it, however, when I try to burn DVDs from the footage, I get junk.

I have a Sony RDR-GX315 (I know, its crap) and when I connect via the firewire to dub, I get stuttering/choppy un-usable DVDs. Connecting direct to my HDTV with component out, I get 1080i of pure smooth goodness (HD rocks).

I've tried recording in DV mode as well as sending in DV mode with the same result.

It's been suggested the codec in the Sony can't handle the HDV format. It's ALSO been suggested the Canons HDV output isn't quite to spec causing the Sony to not know what to do.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Tom
