XA10 vs XF100

Anyone have thoughts on the subject for Wedding work?
It would be replacing a HV40 and used used with a XH-A1.
(The HV40 would be relegated to use as a back-up and for HDV capture.)

Re: XA10 vs XF100

since I use sound from one camera only, I use HF G10 on the crane along with EX1 and 1D/5D as a A, B and C cams, with some very light sharpening it holds up OK,
I was having the same question and this video Canon XA10 & XF105 - YouTube helped me to make a decision;
both cameras have the same sensor, and 422 that XF has will be successfully converted to 420 even before you will be burning your DVDs/BDs,
but there are different opinions:

hi Buba
are you able to intercut footage shot with the XA10 and the 5D in the same timeline?

Re: XA10 vs XF100

Just quickly dropping in to give my thoughts on these 2 cameras.

I own the xa10 and I am happy with it.

I was interested in the xf100 but I found out that you must have adobe 5.5 to edit MXF files.

In this video you can clearly see that the xa10 has a sharper image compared to the xf100 Canon XA10 & XF105 - YouTube

The xa10 lacks external controls, but the touch screen is a very useful tool and makes up for it. The tracking touch focus is a big plus.

you cant use auto audio gain if you have a external mic with the xa10.

The dynamic and powered IS is no good, it distorts the image, the standard OIS is very good.

I didn't care for the Dynamic IS either, at least in the situations I was using it in.

Re: XA10 vs XF100

Regarding the XF100 Don, MFX codec is a trouble free codec, at least in Vegas, but the real issue for me was the file sizes, with very little advantage with 4:2:2 over 4:2:0 considering the substantially larger files it creates.

In addition, due to file size limits, you get your clips broken up in 5 minute segments, a real pain.

Don, I looked at the XF100 closely, was minute away from pulling the trigger until I found out about the file issue, so glad I didn't get it.

On the other hand the new Panasonoc AG160 ad AG130 shoot in all the professional modes, is AVCHD and is said by the staff at one camera store to beat the XF100 out in image quality. It's the one I would go with if it were me.

It is now shipping and available in a few locations. A tape store in Columbus Ohio has them in stock, and how I would love to have one.
