XH-A1 record tapeless

I have been recording DV videos with XH-A1 to datavideo DN-60A recorder for several years. I now want to record in HDV and I need to record segments longer than 1 hour, which is as long as a tape will run. I can't find a way to record tapeless, a tape needs to be running or I can't record. Any suggestions?

Hi Bob, you chose the correct board to post in, however...

I just took a look through our DataVideo forum and there are several discussions there about using the DN-60 with an XH-A1. You may receive additional replies here, but in the meantime you might want to browse through our DataVideo section, located at https://www.dvinfo.net/forum/datavid...ies-recorders/

Hope this helps,

There were 80 minute DV/HDV cassettes available. They would give an extra 20 minutes of record time before end of tape if that helps. The tape was thinner and arguably not as durable as 60 minutes, but that might not be an issue if the money recording is to tapeless media.

Thanks Don, I bought several 80 minute tapes.

Also thanks to Roger Van Duyn, who answered my question on how to record tapeless or continue to record after the backup tape runs out. System Setup/DV Control/ON

Ah, yes... I had forgotten about that one.

Been a long time. Too long. Thanks for the follow-up, Bob!

Interesting! From the notes on page 74 of the manual

Quote:

While both this camcorder and a connected device are recording, if this camcorder stops recording
because of a condition other than pressing the start/stop button (e.g., if the tape has reached its
end), the connected device will continue recording.
I would test it to be sure it works with you device before counting on it.

Hi Bob:
I still used mine with the Sony HVR-MRC1 Memory Recording Unit.
You can find still on ebay. There are several. Some made in china.
Others used, take your pick.

Hi All,

I have a XH-A1 incoming. What choices are there that won't break the bank to record tapeless? Not sure what to 'google' so not sure if just any DVI recorder will work or there's something specific I need. HD obviously. :)

Thanks!

You could try ADS PYRO and an old computer that still has firewire. and google for "Scenalyzer"

Re: XH-A1 record tapeless

Hmm.. That could work. I don't have a PC with firewire so I'd have to get a firewire adapter.

How do the recorders work? Just capture the video signal and record to a SSD? SHould any digital video recorder work? Would prefer something like that :)

Thanks :)

I would capture then transfer with thumb drive onto your good computer for editing, colour correction etc.
The good thing about a second computer with windows 7 is it does not tie up your good computer.
I bought a cheap £60 laptop with Windows 7 (looked nearly new. Unfortunately no firewire.) last month so I could run a diagnostic tool for my car.

So trying to read up on it..

https://amzn.to/3jNryaJ

I'm looking at the manual (camera hasn't arrived yet) and it looks like the above won't work, correct? I need a firewire capture device, not just like an HDMI video in recorder?
Sounds like my real options are sony hvr-mrc1k or Focus FS-4?

Re: XH-A1 record tapeless

Looking back at the ADS Pyro A/V Link - I would do Firewire from camera to ADS, then composite from ADS to PC, is that correct?

Thanks :-D

Re: XH-A1 record tapeless

If the camera has firewire you only need to plug that into the firewire port in the computer. The ADS PYRO is used mainly for analogue capture.
I would still look into ScenalyzerLive Page for capturing.

Re: XH-A1 record tapeless

K, thanks, appreciate all the help. I THINK things may have gotten easier, LOL:

So initially I was looking at a local FB listing for a Sony HVR-HD1000U . Really good price. It appeared to have fallen through. Found a XHA1S on ebay for a pretty good price. Doing some looking, sample video appeared better on the XHA1S, so I went with it. Now I'm finding out the HVR is still available, AND has HDMI out. I can much easier get HDMI out to USB video on the PC, so it's almost worth it to get the HVR if only for a 'transfer' camera, but also a backup. Any reason not to?
