This is a common problem with the Sony and Canon cameras that is addressed with The J-Rod. I have made a product that helps solve this problem. It allows the mounting any sized mic, moves the mic back out of the shot, and allows a radio receiver to be mounted instead of a mic, which leaves the shoe on the camera available for a light :
