Ef 500/4 IS
First post here...
As a still photographer and new to the XL H1 i just wanted to share my joy over the EF adapter and my L-telephotolenses. Way over my expectations to get acceptable footage at first try with 3600mm. http://www.jerrygladh.se/film/hager500mm.mov Best regards Jerry |
Jerry,
Welcome to the H1 forum! Thanks for posting. I have not seen any footage with that lens until now. I'll bet Chris Hurd (the boss at DVinfo) would love to do some astrphotography with that setup. I can imagine the full moon through that lens. Wow! I'm kind of surprised that you are maintaining a fairly deep depth of field in that shot, with that focal length. The footage looks like the stock settings from the camera. If you haven't done so, check out the custom preset library for the H1. The default settings render colors far less vividly than after tweaking the settings. Several of us are using the settings by Steven Dempsey called "Panalook". There are several others in the library that you can download and try. I look forward to seeing more footage from your H1 with that lens. I'm waiting for delivery of my new 70-200 L f/2.8. |
Jerry, bra med nye fra skandinavia her på forumet (sorry englishspeakers!)
It's nice to view your footage of the Grey Heron (I suppose?) And I'm also surprised of your depht of field in the shoot. Do you remember your aperture settings? I'm doing some shoots myself with the XLH1 and the exact same lense as you do. As Ken says there are som nice presets you can try out here at the XLH1 forum. Look at the sticky thread. Until now I have tried several of the presets, my impression so far is that for the most natural outdoor colors (at least here in Scandianvia this time of year) is the Outsiden presets by Lauri Kettunen. The Panalook gives a very rich and colorful picture but a little bit to colorful for my taste! I might be able to put some of my footage online later tonight. Nice to compare different settings. By the way, many of us wildlifephotographer are discussing different topics over at the Under Water Over Land (UWOL). There is also a UWOL-Challenge starting january 1st. Many of us are attending this challenge. |
Footage Request - Motorsport
Hi guys,
I'm just wondering if anybody has any footage taken with the H1 of motorsport events? In particular Motocross racing or Mountain bike/BMX riding. Im planning to upgrade my arsenal from my 2 XL1s, 1 XL2, 1 XM1 (GL1) to 4 XLH1s, and want to see some footage before I make my decision. Merry Christmas to All. Martin |
Is there any chance I can get a look at this file somehow?
Sounds interesting, and I am needing to Shoot a documentary in February 2007 - so would like to see how it looks etc Thanks Martin |
Is there any chance that this footage could be re-uploaded or we could possibly arrange a file transfer sometime?
I would really like to view the possibilities of this camera and greenscreen for my intended purchase. Thanks, Martin |
Sorry Martin, those were taken down quite some time ago.
Raw SDI from the H1 is great for keying, depending on how you capture it. |
The view out my window right now

Here's a still from some shots I just took out my window:

Well, I'm jealous.
Very nice. |
can you run around the pond there and spraypaint the last roof
on the right a neutral gray? The highlight off the white snow is very distracting. Other than that...it's perfect. Send us an update when finished. :) |
That's really a painting, right?
|
Wow Steven! Beautiful shot! I see that it is snowing up there pretty good too! I am a bit farther down from you. But still, I should have thought to go somewhere scenic. oh well, maybe next time.
Nice photo! Loved it... ~Gabriel |
it was a work for hire situation so unfortunately I cannot share any clips but I shot a motocross event with an H1 awhile back and I was pretty happy with the results. we also had an HVX200 to do some slow-mo stuff but the P2 cards are completely impractical for the A camera in a situation like that.

Thanks Nathan.
Well, here is my first "real" video with my new XLH1 is the one below. I gather the new UWOL-challenge, "The Living Skies", and here is my contribution: Underneath |
Geir, as a nature lover, I really enjoyed your film...keep it up!!

Edgemere - amatuer on the H1
Well here it is. My first 'real' usage of the H1 at work. I had about an hour and a half outside the house (the one we`ll be restoring at work) to just play with the camera since it was all of 46 degrees! Any and all critique welcome, be it framing, motion, etc. My thoughts/comments
- the second clip is very shaky due to a bad tripod head, and most likely my shaky hand, but the head wiggles alot even with a slight touch and it was at close to full zoom. - these are random shots and not intended to be edited together, it was just practice but i thought to share and try and make something nice like I see in the sample clip section instead of just uploading a random clip. Thanks for the inspiration guys. - I think the white balance was off, and i dare not take more time on this doing color correction as i am on the clock and it was supposed to be a quick practice....hard to tell someone that "quick" and "editing" don`t usually go in the same sentence. those are all the excuses i have :D Hope you still enjoy it. http://www.kiukle.com/temp/edgemere.mov 50 megs |
just shows the canon is a beautiful camera, with nice images. A real pity about the shaking tripod, its really noticable apart from its good. Nice music too. The main advice i can give you is this. Your eyes dont zoom, so dont use it, watch any hollywood movie and you will see they never use zoom, unless its very intentional, bet you never thought about that beore have ya :) Thanks for posting and keep giving us more footage please!
cheers. Andy |
Norway Scenery #2
Here is some more footage shoot with Canon XLH1 + 20x HD L. The file is uncompressed Mpeg2 - 720p, file size 127MB, lenght 1:18
Link: http://media.dvinfo.net/xlh1/pj/muskox-winter.mpg The footage show the Muskoxen at the Dovrefjell Nationalpark in a beautiful winter scenery. Originally shoot in 1080/50i (PAL), shutter at 1/50, presets from Steven Dempsey's DISJECTA, whitebalance outdoor, gain -3. Aperture adjusted for proper exposure. I used a polarization filter and ND set to 1/6. Get the right DOF and focus is my main task for the moment, but I think I managed well in this footage? The camcorder is working very well under this cold conditions. I'm using the FU-1000 viewfinder which is much better than the original vf. I would like to know what you think about this footage, especially from a technical aspect? Enjoy |
Can you put them up again? been looking all over for greenscreen shots with the xl h1

Thanks |
i see what you mean, the one of the 'lantern' wasn`t supposed to last that long either...i just ran out of shots to fill the song out so I let it go. I`d have preferred more ECU shots but being the house is so old, there wasn`t much pleasant (even in its old form) to focus in on. Can`t wait until its restored.

Hi Nathan.
I've just watch your Edgemere house video, and I think it was nice. I agreed with Andy on the shaking comments, but next time i guess it wont shake at all :) It's a fine old house and the music was perfect together with the pictures you've captured. I liked your change of focus on details, I must admit, when I do this myself I get shaky pictures on tape. I hope you will enjoy your camera as much I do with mine, and in my opinion, it's a great working horse. I hope to see more of your videos on this site. PS I hope my Norwegian/English was understandable to you :) |
i am lost hd-sdi

The island "Runde"
In between rain, snow and windy weather I shot these scenes.
My wife and one of my daughters join me this time. It's from the island Runde on the west coast of Norway. It is famous for it's thousands of seabirds, but this is a little early in the season. Some clips are a bit shaky because of the wind, but I did use a tripod. Here's my video, 72 MB/wmv-file: Runde Runde is also a treasure island. In 1972 3 divers found a treasure, you can read about it here: Treasure island Runde |
Forget portable SDI for now, suffer through the chunky stuff for a little while longer until more options are developed and produced, then dig deep in those pockets as it's not going to start out affordable, but will get there in time.
Peace , |
Mr Otto, the sea otter
I'm not sure where to put my videoclips?
Under "Show your work" or "XL H1 Sample Clips" ? Heres a link to Mr Otto, the sea otter: http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=90364 |
Nice job Geir. It's great to get a Norwegian perspective on wildlife :)
|
Thanks Steven, nice of you to say.
I'm a bit comfused, where to put my movies in this forum. Under "Show your work", or in this tread. Well any how, here is a directly link to the sea otter: Mr Otto the sea otter |
I generally post my work in the XHA1 section and when I owned an XLH1, I would post it here but it's up to you.

Views in the Park and a short product video
I'm still learning about the camera at work. The other day I got to sneak out to the park with it to do some testing while my boss was out sick ;) I used the Panalook preset by my inspiration for this type of video Mr. Dempsey. As you can see the tripod we have is very inadequate (maybe this video will help sway him to get a decent one) as the camera is too heavy for it ,it sways in the wind, and its a $60 cheap-o from Sears anyway. Also included is a short product video I made the week prior, still learning what he wants and such. Enjoy!
http://www.kiukle.com/temp/rwp.zip 55 megs zipped because my ftp won't upload wmv right. http://www.curtain-wall.com/tapes/lo...king-tape.html |
You have a $9000 dollar camera mounted on a $60 tripod from sears? Yikes!
When I put mine on my lightweight Manfrotto tripod I get scared! And it's a $200 kit. I am downloading the clips now.....will comment soon. Peace! |
yikes is right, I never leave it alone on that thing. But theres not much I can do about it, bosses choice. I tried a shot looking at the ground, the weight pulled the release plate right off the tripod :(( I never let go of that handle!

XLH1 + Transam + M2 shot by Andy Lunn
Well I had the opportunity to shoot my mates transam only thing was I had 2 hours!!! there is so much more i wanted/needed to film, but this was a tester to see how the footage would turn out, and indeed how my camera m2 held up to HD and a 25f framerate. My poor imac really does struggle with the simplest of things in HD.
Anyway have a ganders :) http://media73.co.uk/Transam/ ps. Watch the end, its funny or should that be expensive.!! |
