Well, new stuff is *always* in the works, but consider that the XL1 had a production run of about 44 months, and the XL1S has been out for only 15 months. I think it'll be awhile yet.

Not to tread on the Watchdog's territory, but Panasonic has a new 3 CCD camera that shoots 24 fps as well as 29.97 NTSC (I think). I am hoping that with a higher pixel count per CCD than the XL-1s that it might set the standard for prosumer image quality. It should be released in a month or so and it will be interesting to see how it fares.

I have put off my next travel video in favor of applying to several film schools. That also leaves room for a second camera in the XL-1s's price range. I would love an XL-2 but I think that might be some time from now.

Hi Greg,

I post info about the new Panasonic here http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3614 It sounds like you might be interested. I think the product cycle will be speeded up on the XL1. I would be very surprised is the XL2 (?) takes 29 months. Canon will loose a huge market share in that time. The competition would be miles ahead and no company can afford that. My guess would be that it will be replaced no later than spring of 2004. However, I suspect sooner. I think there is a chance Canon will show something at NAB in April and may ship next summer. But don't hold your breath.

Oh, good luck on film school.

As a basic rule, the more money, the better the product. I know the PD150 is better at least according to Sony than the new dvcam variation of the 950. I also know that for some odd reason, I like the pix of the xl1S better than the 150. I do like the simplicity of the sony, but I'm really happier with the Canon.

I'm wondering more so about the fact that everyone likes the GL2. It sounds like the image is good but not as good in low light. Sounds pretty close for comfort at a thousand dollar difference.

I also think that the pana cam is set to be on the wider side of cameras and with a 10x zoom it's going to have it's strengths, but not a hit on quite every level.
