CineStyle curves now in latest beta

Many have been using the Technicolor CineStyle profile for their Canon DSLRs, and we've seen a lot of downloads for the FirstLight compatible LUT, so we have taken this new build one big step further in supporting this new profile. Now you can set the encoding curve to "CStyle" in the Workspace controls within FirstLight. "CStyle" is not the Technicolor LUT, rather is a model that reverses the camera profile back to linear-light. While that sounds techie, it is really useful as now controls like exposure, white-balance and saturation are more mathematically correct (linear light operations.) If you set the decoding curve to "CStyle" the look will be exactly as before, but with the corrected linear light controls. If you set the decode curve to "Video Gamma" (the default) the CineStyle encoded source will look very much like the LUT has be applied, without using the LUT, freeing up that function for more creative controls.

Note: CStyle curve to Video Gamma is intentionally not exactly like the Tech. LUT, as that LUT has flat ranges which limit post color correction flexibility.

Try it now:

P.S. We also have S-Log curve support now for Sony F3, F23 and F35 users.

Re: CineStyle curves now in latest beta

David:

Thank you for the update.

All of this .lut and Picturestyle business is very interesting.

If I follow this right, by using the CStyle to Video Gama in the Workspace adjustments, we are really choosing the base settings intended by use of the Cinestyle picture profile in the first place. So that means the Cinestyle .lut you provided in your twitter post earlier in week last week is now obsolete, as a device to try to get us the base look, and that opens things up to use other looks on our footage. I actually applied the Cinestyle .lut to footage I had appllied the Workspace setting you recommended, an got a pretty intense and dramatic look.

David:

I may have accidentally changed Primaries. What should that setting be on in normal processing ?

Yes the old (last week) LUT is now obsolete with the new workspace curves, unless you want the double-LUTed look.

"Output Curve" is the normal mode.
