SONY DSC-RX10 gets XAVCS!!!

Not finding it on the US support site yet, but it seems to be showing on some EU Sony support sites...

It's not 4K (bummer), but high bitrate XAVCS looks like it's coming to the RX10 via v.2.0 firmware update!!! HOT DANG!!!

Hmmm, wonder if the update on the UK site would shoehorn into a US RX10?!?!

From Sony UK site:

Benefits and improvements
Enables shooting 60p/30p/24p/120p movies in the XAVC S format that supports high bit rates
(1920×1080) 50p/25,(1280×720) 100p, (1920×1080) 60p/30p/24p,(1280×720) 120p
Note: When shooting a movie in the XAVC S format, ensure that an SDXC card of Class 10 or faster is used.

Hope this means the a6000 and a7/r will get it too. They are ale using the Bionz X processor and should be capable of handling it.

I've read that the Mac updater is available on the Chinese Sony site. Works perfectly, you just have to run the instructions thru a translator. There's a thread at dvxuser.com with details.

Sony seems to be doing everything right these days.
Although I was pleased with the video quality I was getting from my RX10, the AVCHD codec meant I could not trust it for any kind of professional work. Now I can finally use it with confidence. It's the perfect gimbal camera! Thanks Sony.

It's usually close but never a cigar, but you don't here me complaining, the rx10 has become one of my favourite camera's in use, even though it has a few frustrating shortcomings the xavcs codec is a welcome addition.

Curious, what gimbal are you using with the RX10?

Re: SONY DSC-RX10 gets XAVCS!!!

I have a Came 7000. Works really well. I prefer to use it with my rx10 instead of my 5DmkIII in raw mode because of it's deeper depth of field and autofocus capabilities. The light weight of the rx10 also helps a lot when using it for extended periods. The articulating screen also helps.

By the way, while doing some testing with the new codec I found out something interesting. I was trying out some high iso for low light, and apparently the camera is A LOT cleaner at 60p 1/60s than any other mode, particularly when pushing iso up to 1600 and 3200. Cleaner as in 100% usable iso 3200 that looks as good as iso 800 does at 24p. Anyone else confirm this?

Re: SONY DSC-RX10 gets XAVCS!!!

Wow, Luis, that's very interesting on the clean ISO, When I get some new cards I'll check that out.

You know, I purchased the Came7000 in a kit, put it together, (That was a lot of fun, I really enjoyed building it), but I tried to get it to work with a GH3 and a 12-35mm lens, never could get it to work. I could never get it to balance correctly especially the Yaw. I had it for 6 weeks an tried every method I could and resource's,

When I communicated with Came-tv, they said that my camera and lens combo might be too light.
They were real good about the return even at 6 weeks, and gave me a full refund, it did cost me $120.00 to return it though, so, I'm real leary about trying a new model like there Came-7800 which has the 32 bit board dual calibration sensors, and quick release plate, and is suppose to be ready to run out of the box.

Sorry, did not mean to hijack this thread.

The iso test works on avchd as well.

By the way, if a specific camera has a center of gravity that makes it awkward to balance a gimbal, such as a camcorder that needs to be placed to the far right in order to be able to open the screen, you can always use some ballast to counterbalance. ;-)

Re: SONY DSC-RX10 gets XAVCS!!!

Updated my rx10 2 days ago and experienced lag in operation at yesterdays wedding during a outdoor photoshoot, every time I pressed on a button to magnify the screen or to switch between manual and auto focus there was sometimes up to a 2 to 3 second lag before anything happened. This behaviour disappeared later on in the evening at the venue, not sure if the camera was overheating as it was quite warm but I have not had this kind of behaviour before. Anyone else noticed strange things after the firmware upgrade?
