HD Warrior » Blog Archiv » NEW camcorder from Sony…the HXR-NX100 (October 2015)
"The HXR-NX100 features a 1.0 type Exmor® R back-illuminated CMOS Sensor with 20 megapixels. The sensor, which is approximately the same size as a Super 16mm film frame, delivers high resolution, low noise and stunning picture quality even in low light conditions, as well as offering more depth of field control as demanded by today’s diverse shooting requirements. Stunning picture quality is further ensured by a fixed Sony G lens offering 12x optical zoom from 29mm angle of view at wide end that can be increased to 24x with Clear Image Zoom.. These features, combined with built-in 4-step ND filter... "Three independent manual lens rings give simple access to zoom, focus and iris functions. The camcorder also provides a wide variety of connectivity options including HDMI, Multi/Micro USB, XLR terminals, REMOTE, Composite (BNC) and Multi Interface (MI) Shoe, which allows for a wide range of accessories without the need for cables, such as the HVL-LBPC Video Light and the UWP-D wireless microphone series. "Further extending the recording flexibility of the Sony NXCAM range, the HXR-NX100 is able to record in AVCHD, DV and XAVC S 50Mbps for multiple choices and high quality images." |

News Shooter | Sony launches the HD only HXR-NX100 NXCAM camcorder- 1.0-type Exmor CMOS sensor, 24X zoom and XAVC S 50Mbp/s recording
"I think this latest offering from Sony is squarely aimed at developing markets such as India, Africa and South America. The lack of 4K and the fact that it is not a world camera may steer a lot of potential buyers away." |

Looks like an AX100 in the bigger body, without 4K. Controls seem less than the FDR-AX1 or PXW-Z100 but a bit of what is in the X70 like picture profiles etc.

Re: HXR-NX100: 1'' sensor NXCAM
Very interesting...Sony is using the 1inch type sensor in larger ENG-style bodies! Very nice.
If Sony follows its long history on this, we are sure to see a professional "big brother" in the not too distant future. Its just bound to happen ;-) I'd love to see this new pro model have: 1 inch type sensor with 10 megapixels inside its 16x9 crop. This sensor's 20 megapixel total count is great for an RX10 but way too high for 4k. Constant f2.8...prolly asking too much..like the RX10? Full picture profiles set 150 Mbp/s 8bit 4:2:0 Long GOP on SDXC cards..like JVC does. $4,500? I dont know...I think that sounds fair IBC 2015? |

Even though I'm a Sony guy, if both were the same price, I'd go with the DVX200, provided that the image quality wasn't disappointing for some unforeseen reason. |

The lens may have to be F2.8-4.5 like the DVX200, unless they can ask Fujinon to make it again like they did with the EX cameras. I'd want to see all the recording options of the FS7 ported to a 4K variant of this with no RAW, but SLog3 and SGamut3.Cine. I'd expect with a good fixed lens it to be around the price of the current PXW-X200. |
Re: HXR-NX100: 1'' sensor NXCAM
XAVC-L is 4:2:2 10bit for HD but for 4K on the Z100 it is 4:2:0 8bit and I expect that the X70 will be the same. Only difference is that the Z100 will also record at 50/60P but the X70 is likely only 30P.
The Z100 XAVC-L update effectively added the functions of the FDR-AX1 but with XAVC-L MXF instead of XAVC-S mov wrapper. Sony clearly define MXF for the XDCam line and mov for the consumer/prosumer line. Ron Evans |
Re: HXR-NX100: 1'' sensor NXCAM
On the FS7 apparently it is 8bit 4:2:2 XAVC-L at 4K.
|
Re: HXR-NX100: 1'' sensor NXCAM
The FS7 which I think is 10bit 4:2:2 intra frame XAVC-I at 600Mbps and 8bit 4:2:0 for UHD XAVC-L at 150Mbps for 50/60P and 100Mbps for 23.97, 25 and 30 just like the Z100 and the AX1.
I think this NX100 is marketed at the event market to have what is a consumer camera look more professional. Sony had the NX30U as a more pro version of the CX760 and I think this is a similar approach of the CX900 and a lower spec camera to add to the NX3/1 with a larger sensor to get the shallower depth of field. They appear to have left off useful things like touch focus that is actually on the NX3/1 !! Still think the lower spec FS7 will be a 4K upgrade to the EA50. This would bring a 4K product to the weddding/event market. Ron Evans |
Re: HXR-NX100: 1'' sensor NXCAM
Looks like they have put the Sony RX10 in a camcorder body.

Re: HXR-NX100: 1'' sensor NXCAM
I cannot find any reference to 4K XAVC-L 4:2:2. B&H also quote what I assume. 10bit for XAVC-I as well as XAVC-L 4:2:2 10bit for HD but 8 bit 4:2:0 for UHD with same frame rates and data rates as the FDR-AX1 and PXW-Z100. The info on the Sony WEB sites is also vague !!! In one sentence they mention 4K 4:2:2 and Full HD but no mention of 4K Long GOP. Would be nice to know for sure. The record times look the same as my AX1 or Z100 so likely the same .

Re: HXR-NX100: 1'' sensor NXCAM
A crappy consumer codec on a Pro Cam. Good luck sony or to an NLE which consider Xavc-s a crappy codec

Re: HXR-NX100: 1'' sensor NXCAM
Sony really should start thinking in terms of better specs for 4K. I think 10-bit 4:2:2 is feasible at 150 Mbps, and 12-bit 4:2:2 at 200 Mbps would be nicer. Also, why won't they support DCI 4,096 x 2,160 on the 1-inch models when they offer it on the 1/2.3-inch Z100?

Media composer. Sony and Avid never develop a codec or ama plug-ins for Xavc-S as it is a consumer codec for consumer camcorder. For Media Composer exist a buggy ama plug-ins and it cost 495 $. This is the reason I'm moving to Edius....

Re: HXR-NX100: 1'' sensor NXCAM
I read somewhere that there's still a problem with XAVC-S and FCP10.2.1 also.

Hi Ugo Merlini,
I edit in Avid MC 3.1 and yes there is no XAVCS AMA. I use Edit Ready to convert XAVCS files, these days it's almost in every edit that I do as more people are using the A7S RX10 etc… I own both cameras and find the work flow easy, yes it's a bit long to get these into Avid but hey…. Avid has it's own way of doing things. I also have migrated to Premier Pro and PP takes XAVCS files natively. This is wonderful and I wish Avid could do the same. |

Re: HXR-NX100: 1'' sensor NXCAM
As a wedding video guy, this camera looks like a very nice blend of features in a relatively compact form. Having the 3 dedicated rings, and all the buttons (minimal menu diving) is a huge plus IMO. It's one of the things that's kept me on the edge from getting the AX100/X70.
I'd like to see some dimensions/weight on the unit... but if it's <$2,000 it looks like a nice replacement for my aging NX5. I love the 1" sensor look for shallow DOF.... if there was a way to use the FMU with it, that would be great! But, it doesn't look like it has the capability based on the images. |
Re: HXR-NX100: 1'' sensor NXCAM
There is a handy PDF document called:
Sony XAVC Workflow Guide It presents the variations of XAVC for each Sony camera, and then presents a table with the specs for each variation of XAVC. |

Re: HXR-NX100: 1'' sensor NXCAM
The Australian Sony Pro site now lists the HXR-NX30 and NX70, NX5 (and some others) as discontinued and the HXR-NX100 is now there. No more BOSS in the pro cameras.

Re: HXR-NX100: 1'' sensor NXCAM
FCPX has always been able to import XAVC-S, it's only XAVC-L that it couldn't deal with, especially clips from the Sony X70. For several months we've been using first Catalyst Browse, then recently EditReady to transcode to ProRes. However, the latest (as of this week) firmware for the X70 has fixed that - FCPX will now import and edit native XAVC-L.

Re: HXR-NX100: 1'' sensor NXCAM
FYI: B&H page for this camera is now up:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1156385-REG/sony_hxr_nx100.html Of note is the F-stop range. Identical to that of the DVX200 and the X70. I know some low-light ENG people won't like the loss of light, but keep in mind the price. Those with EX1s might just have to accept cameras from now on may not have that F0.9 stop loss throughout the zoom range. |
Re: HXR-NX100: 1'' sensor NXCAM
The lens is clearly a three ring version of the lens on the X70/AX100/CX900. Sony are really milking this core platform. It looks to be a more useful version than the X70 but leaves off useful things like touch focus probable because it doesn't have a touch LCD and still has a crazy lens cap instead of the nice lever closure version on all the other NXCAM models !! Nice move back to L series batteries though. . That means common batteries with NX5, NX3/1 and NEX-EA50 the likely other cameras for events. Of course after 18 months they still haven't got all my FDR-AX1 working !!! Sony seem to be getting things about 85% at the moment

Re: HXR-NX100: 1'' sensor NXCAM
There is a clear lack of buttons on the underside of the LCD. It may just be touchscreen.
To see this with a Fujinon lens would be pretty good as a higher up model. Hope they also solve the highlight issues and skew in a future model |

Re: HXR-NX100: 1'' sensor NXCAM
I wonder what the chances are of this camera getting the Sony PXW-X70-style 4k software upgrade treatment in the future.
Or...Sony just might have the 4k big brother version of this ready by then. |

Size seems very close to the NX5. I was thinking something like Canon AX20, but this NX100 it's very very similar to my AX2000 (NX5 cousin). It's quite big. This new wave of one sensor (Video & Photo cams to record video) makes me thinking what happens with 3 sensor cams. It's the end of this kind of machines? Actually, 1 sensor gives the same or better quality than 3 sensors? Almost all film cameras are 1 sensor? Specifications HXR-NX100 General Mass Approx. 1900 g (4 lb 3 oz) (body) Approx. 2100 g (4 lb 10 oz) (with lens hood, eyecup, NP-F770 battery) Dimensions (W × H × D)*1 171.3 × 187.8 × 371.3 mm (6 3/4 × 7 3/8 × 14 5/8 inches) Good points of this cam: 1.- Battery system. By far the best price / quality / duration of all brands. Canon & Panasonic batteries aren't good as Sony ones. And this model, NP-F970, are the best of the best. Batteries from the nineties... still works. Recharge resistance is amazing. Hard to believe. Sony rulez in this field. 2.- 1" sensor size. Good for background blur & good for sharp focus. Not critical as full frame sensor (in a run&gun situations). Somebody says it's an RX10 photo camera in a NXCAM body. We'll have to find out if the same sensor. 3.- Ergonomics very similar to the Sony HDR-FX1, Z5, NX5, NX3, etc. This is excellent. This is a strong point. 4.- Updated codec, XAVC S 50Mbps. It's better than AVCHD (five years old). It's a step forward. 5.- Estimated price: less than 2K. This price hurts Panasonic and Canon counterparts (Panasonic 90 and Canon AX20). Bad points: 1.- No SDI output or version with it (like Canon AX25). 2.- No 4K. This is relative because the price is so low. But we are in 4K world more than 2K. Let's see what happens with firmware updates. 3.- 12x optical zoom. Hmmmmm, the same as the old HDV tape cam FX1. Ten years later... 14x or 16x if the can't put 20x. When you try 20x (it's basic) you can't go backwards. It's a big fault and I accept that the big sensor and the price is the key. |
Re: HXR-NX100: 1'' sensor NXCAM
It seems an interesting packaging of what is likely the CX900. The AX100 I have has Clear image zoom so that 12x zoom can be 24x zoom and it works very well more range than my NX5U and in most instances a better image quality so don't let the zoom range bother you. XAVC-S is also better than the AVCHD that the NX5U has so comparing 60P XAVC-S from the AX100 with 60i from the NX5U the AX100 wins !!! I will look at it when it comes out and may offer a lower cost replacement for my NX5U.
I have SDI on the NX5U and never used it so no loss. As far as 4K is concerned for me it would need to be 60P and I do not think that Sony will do that on this range of camera. Ron Evans |

Re: HXR-NX100: 1'' sensor NXCAM
Looking at this guy, even though I'm trying to go smaller on camera size... having something in a similar layout to my NX5... that uses the same batteries which I have a ton of, would be nice. If it's around $2,000 may have to look at getting one.

NX100 is $1,699
A very nice price...
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1156385-REG/sony_hxr_nx100.html I had almost talked myself into picking up some CX900s this week for $1,300... but now that I see this, I'd much rather have the NX100 external controls and 3 rings for $400 more. I've not had any issues working with the 50mbps XAVCs from the Sony a7s and have been able to do a good amount of post to those files, and I assume this one will have the same abilities. I should add, I spent a lot of time at Best Buy this past week, and the focus on the CX900s was very slow to lock on... I'd imagine that in the NX100 it would be quicker since it's newer and has a more "pro" style build. Will def have to check it out first. |
Re: HXR-NX100: 1'' sensor NXCAM
Wow I didn't expect that price. Now I'm tempted to get one and use it for all the small jobs next year. Thanks for the update.
