New RED camera, the Raven, $5,950 body.

RED is about to release a new camera, the Raven. It looks like their budget 4K camera.

This is not a rumor, it's been confirmed by RED personnel.

When RED says "the release date is unknown at this stage" I don't hold my breath.

If this is less expensive, with the Dragon sensor... why would anyone buy a Scarlet?
(seriously?)

Re: New RED camera, the Raven, $5,950 body.

That is some pretty amazing specs for the money. Shame that Pro Res is limited. If it wasn't I'd be on it ! Red format just doesn't work for 50% of my clients.

Surprising move though....don't quite understand where this leaves scarlet either ....!?

Regarding Scarlet, one has to wonder if the competition hasn't already left it in the dust. It's not Raven vs. Scarlet. It's RED vs. everybody else.

Re: New RED camera, the Raven, $5,950 body.

i agree, an amazing camera for the price, Dragon sensor and unlike the Scarlet Raven shoots 4K on 4K sensor, and up to 120 fps - nice!
it's not going to be $6K but closer to $10 ready to shoot, but still pretty good price for 4K raw 16 stops of DR @ 120fps

Re: New RED camera, the Raven, $5,950 body.

But when will it ship? I really believe a lot of the feature and resolution growth in cameras over the last decade is due to Jim Jannard and RED. But not due to what they actually do - just because of what they threaten. By the time these Ravens are in-stock at B&H, it'll be Labor Day of 2016 and the feature set they "announced" this week will be paralleled by the rest of the camera manufacturers.

I don't think that RED sells through B&H, IIRC.

But still, it's only an APS-C sensor.

not even, a bit smaller then, but what's wrong with that, best examples of world cinema were shot on S35, not on 36x24.

Even less than S 35, that's a recent addition that uses the soundtrack area on motion picture film. The academy format is narrower and cropping is used for the flat wide screen formats..

Hey Mike
Pretty safe bet that they'll roll out in Feb (trickle may be a better word than roll). Considering most of the R&D was done for the Weapon already, the Raven shouldn't be a stretch to get out on time.

Just had a thought... it's too bad they aren't making it with a Sony mount... then you could run a Speedbooster on it with all the goodness it provides FOV wise.
