Re: Dji osmo
Hrmm I was tempted to buy a Ronin-M for my GH4.. but this is cheaper and would achieve the same result. Very tempting.

Re: Dji osmo
Just pre-ordered. Same thing, I almost bought a Go Pro Hero 4 Silver and one of the Go Pro gimbals yesterday but this seems like a more well integrated system, with more control image and movement fine tuning than a Go Pro. Can't wait until they ship in a few weeks. I have access to a Ronin M and I have a 5D MKIII laying around but frankly, the Ronin is a bit finicky to set up and to travel with. I think I will actually get a lot more use out of the Osmo, even on real jobs. It doesn't look as good as my C100 + Ninja Blade but for an occasional moving shot to add energy, walk and talks, etc. this thing looks great.
Darn, doing a shoot in NY, I would love to run around the city with one of these, but the shoot happens before they are supposedly going to ship. |
DJI Osmo gimbal
DJI Osmo ? Reinvent Movement | DJI
Single handle gimbal Price $649 with X3 camera 4k camera or X5 or X5Pro Raw option. LONDON, Oct. 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- DJI, the world leader in creative imaging technology, today announced the launch of the Osmo, an integrated camera and handheld stabilizer that opens the creative possibilities of cameras in movement. Using DJI's signature three-axis gimbal stabilization technology, the Osmo eliminates the shake of traditional handheld devices, creating cinematic shots in an easy-to-use, easy-to-set up form factor. The modular format of the Osmo makes it fully compatible with DJI's Zenmuse camera series, but comes standard with a 4K, 12-megapixel camera with a 1/2.3" sensor and a 94 degree field-of-view lens. "DJI consistently refines the way cameras move in space - whether they are in the air or on the ground," said Frank Wang, DJI CEO and Founder. "With the Osmo, we have created a camera specifically designed to capture a smooth moving image regardless of filming conditions." Intelligent controls built into the handle make changing between shooting angles, capturing photos or recording video effortless. Creators can view live images of what the camera captures, adjust camera settings and control smart filming functions including - Panorama - Take a picture and the camera will automatically pan around 360 degrees, taking and stitching overlapping photos to create a panorama. Long Exposure - Make handheld long-exposures crisp using the camera's stabilization technology Slow Motion - Capture slow motion shots at 120 frames-per-second (fps) up to 1080p Its onboard universal mount works together with an included smartphone holder in addition to other optional accessories including a tripod, a bike mount or an extension arm. The Osmo handle comes equipped with an on-board stereo microphone, as well as a 3.5mm audio jack for recording professional-quality external sound. "Traditional handheld cameras are either shaky, or require bulky stabilizers that are difficult to set up," said Paul Pan, DJI's Senior Product Manager. "The Osmo moves the experience of handheld filmmaking from capturing what happened, to sharing expressive, smooth video that shows what an experience was like." The Osmo handle, which can be bought separately without a camera, is fully compatible with DJI's existing Zenmuse series, making it the perfect accessory for everyone who already owns an Inspire 1 with a Zenmuse X3, a Zenmuse X5 Pro or a Zenmuse X5 Raw. The Osmo is available for pre-order at store.dji.com for USD 649 and GBP 549 and will begin shipping October 15. Additional Osmo accessories include - Tripod - Place the Osmo securely on almost any surface. Extension Rod - Reach out further for all new angles. Combine with the Tripod for added height. Bike Mount - Lock the Osmo to your bike for a new kind of bike movie. Universal Mount - Add extra microphone or LED light to your Osmo. Straight Extension Arm - Mount two accessories to your Osmo at the same time. |

Sorry didn't see this thread.
Posted press release here. Perhaps mods can move it. http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/digital-...mo-gimbal.html Looks to be ideal gimbal for single person discrete quick setup situations like shooting in NYC for example. |
Re: Dji osmo
I was looking at the beholder but this looks to be a much better deal, is it compatible with android?
|
Re: Dji osmo
Just ordered an X3 unit. Should be a useful little tool.

Re: Dji osmo
One of the reviews on the web showed someone using it with an HTC so I would say yes, the DJI app can be used on Android.

Re: Dji osmo
Does anybody know if you can put other cameras besides the DJI ones?
|
Re: Dji osmo
I didn't think those would mount on the hand-held device like the x3 model?
|
Re: Dji osmo
Different gimbal, not the Osmo.
|
Re: Dji osmo
The Osmo product is the handle (which also includes battery, logic board, plugs, controls, etc.) Zenmuse is the gimbal. X3, X5... those are the cameras.
The base Osmo includes the Zenmuse X3 (gimbal and camera) and the Osmo handle. You can buy the X5 or X5R with Zenmuse Gimbal to replace the Zenmuse X3 that comes with the base Osmo. It's my understanding that later there will be an Osmo X5 package, but not yet. Right now you have to buy the X3 and, later, the X5 upgrade. I just ordered the X3 edition to see if the gimbal can do the type of shots I want. If so, I'll definitely be adding either a second unit or will upgrade the camera/gimbal to the X5 or X5R (need to see some reports on their various quality... some early reports are that the compression kills the benefits of the X5 without Raw.) |

If you don't need to change lenses or shallow DOF, then you can spend ~$600 on the base model with the X3 which still shoots very nice 4K video. |
Re: Dji osmo
I am sure it is a very fine camera system and at $5K not including all the accessories, priced to compete with professional systems. However, I think my remark is more, the marketing seems to be consumer oriented. I can see how this could work on a professional level. But once on that level, I would be more apt to look at better known professional cameras married to a gimbal. Perhaps DJI can change that perception through time.

Re: Dji osmo
Just a thought, but as the Osmo can be controlled remotely from iPhone/Android, it could be mounted on a pole, which in turn is mounted on a tripod, then Bingo! - you have a Polecam...

That seems pretty much what they're offering.

Yes Craig, I've seen that. However, I was referring to a much longer pole - maybe 12 foot- as with the Polecam.

Re: Dji osmo
I shot some video recently with the GoPro using a Feiyu-Tech GS4 mounted on a monopod. I was at a vineyard on uneven ground with the action moving at a very fast pace. The shots are not perfect but it gave me the effect of using a crane in an area where a crane was not practical. I also shot with an AX70 but anything that looks like a crane and most walking shots are the monopod/GS4/Gopro setup. Overall it worked out really well for me and was very light and mobile. I love the idea of being able to use a similar set-up with a raw camera once the price goes down.

Engadget DJI Osmo review here - they seem to like it.
DJI Osmo review: A hand-held stabilized camera worthy of its price I should add that I've just read the first few customer reviews of it on amazon.com - seems there are issues with the app crashing/freezing. I'm interested in this device but I will await further real owner reviews - proceed with caution! |
Re: Dji osmo
Mine arrives on Thursday, will report back as soon as I get to play with it. The bummer I am reading from early adopters is that the fan makes it too loud to shoot dialogue, possibly even with plugging in a wireless mic, people are still reporting that the fan would be too loud to shoot talent even from 5'-10' away.
Second thing I am seeing repeatedly is that the compression looks worse in 4k, that if you are going to use 1080, shoot 1080. It maxes out at 60 Mbps. I am still looking forward to using it in my work and for travel/fun but I have a client who wanted to shoot a walk and talk with a quality wireless mic, not sure if that will work? We'll see. The compression looks only marginally better than Go Pro, which is pretty crappy but what do you want for $649.00? |

Here's a quick test with the OSMO and the RodeLink wireless lav. Nothing special, just hooked it up and hit record. I didn't find the fan to be much of a problem (outdoors at least). Raw out of the camera.

Osmo Woes
My Osmo arrived on Friday. Worst out of box experience I have ever had with a new piece of gear. Instructions are limited, confusing, make little sense. After charging the battery overnight, I tried to initialize and link to my iPhone, Osmo kept just shutting down. The phone bracket basically won't hold my iPhone with the case on it, I am going to have to ditch my battery case when I use the iPhone with the Osmo because if I don't, the iPhone is basically falling out of the bracket on the Osmo. Even when the Osmo did power up, I only saw picture on my phone for perhaps 1-2 seconds, then the Osmo would power down like the battery was dead, so I am not even sure if it ever initialized? Battery charged all weekend as I was out doing family stuff, going to try it again tomorrow.
If it doesn't start behaving this morning when I have an hour or two to mess with it, it's getting shipped back to B&H for a refund. Not a good experience at all, DJI needs some lessons from the other manufacturers and Apple on how to create a positive out of box experience for their customers. Too bad, I was pretty hyped to fall in love with the Osmo but now, I am shipping it back unless it behaves. |
Re: Dji osmo
Sorry to read of your bad experience but this kind of thing/reading of some other experiences with them is one of the reasons I steered away.
Sure, I got pretty interested in the DJI Osmo when it was announced (and we are starting to see some "OKish footage" from it)... but by the time you've bought the X5 camera (and even that will be limited to 60Mbps) it's serious money that can be spent in other ways to getting professional grade gimbal shots - in my view. I decided to go a different route. My Letus Helix Jr Aluminium arrived this morning, along with the Pelican case I had bought with it and a few extras. Nice instruction handbook inside, plus good resources on the web for set-up. What a beautifully designed, well thought out and superbly engineered piece of kit. Can't wait to fly my Canon C100 and new Sony FS5 on it - when the latter arrives - soon I hope! I wanted the flexibility to be able to fly decent cams and glass of my choice, not be limited to a "locked-in DJI camera only" type of choice. Sure, others will love the simplicity and very small form factor - and I understand that. Time will tell if I made the right choice - but right now I feel I did for the applications I'm going to use it for. Not wishing to hijack this thread, just reminding people thinking of allocating the money required for the Osmo and better X5 cam that there are some good alternative choices out there, made by very well respected companies that pride themselves on customer service. |
Re: Dji osmo
Two of my second shooters have gotten theirs. One was doing a commercial project this weekend with it. Will have to call him later today to get his experiences. The other shot a wedding in Antigua last weekend and I haven't heard how his experience was with the Osmo, but will check today as well.

Re: Dji osmo
Well, after a glowing report on the Osmo last week, I seem to have come across a problem:
After powering the unit up today, I had two steady green lights either side of the handle base. The wifi connection was good from the iphone to the unit, able to control gimbal movements etc, just no picture from camera! Besides that, after opening the camera dialogue page, there was nothing that I could do there to change settings. Last week, the camera was shooting in PAL, today it had reverted to NTSC with no way of altering it. In fact, the base controller didn't want to recognise a camera at all, even though as I said, I could operate the gimbal from the phone. It's probably too early for there to be any public help posts yet, but I have contacted DJI Support EU. Time will tell... |
