HD to SD, Jaggies and I hate HD to SD!

Hello,

I have been using the trial for TMPGenc v5 to find out if it is better than Adobe Media Encoder CS5 for all encoding tasks. In short I believe it is better but I am still not happy.

I shoot a lot of stuff in 720p60. I really like this mode and it has always been said it is the best for DVD downconversion. But my recent testing is proving frustrating once on DVD.

Detail level is fine it is just that once on an interlaced DVD it is impossible to get rid of jaggies on diagonals. TMPGenc does about the best job I have seen but they are still there. VirtualDub does a nice job as well but that adds another step in the process.

So I tried some 1080i footage just to test and it seems the jaggies are not there or at least less than 720p60.

So I am looking for user experience. Have you noticed a difference between 720p60 & 1080i from a DVD point of view?

I prefer to shoot progressive but sad to say that DVD is still way more popular than Blu-ray and if 1080i is better for DVD then I will look into it.

Thanks

In my experience 1080 is way better when converted to DVD. The difference is noticeable on big LCD monitors (32" and up).

But I have got excellent results from 720 25p to DVD PAL. I keep everything in progressive for as long as I can.

Re: HD to SD, Jaggies and I hate HD to SD!

Tim,

A member of our forum, mostly active on the Edius forum, has spent quite some time figuring this out. Initially he used VirtualDub, then TMPGEnc. You can find the full tutorial on his business website, at TmpgEnc Video Mastering Works 5 Tutorial for downscaling Edius HD to SD - he even provides the template you just have to copy it over to the right folder in TMPGEnc.

Although his tutorial is Edius specific, you should have no problem coming from any NLE.

Good luck!
