domain name registration

Didn't there used to be two "official" places to register a domain name?

I'm just looking for the least expensive registar - don't need hosting.

Thanks.

There are zillions out there. I'm using www.buydomains.com, but I
have no idea if there are better or cheaper ones out there. For the price they
list you can add redirection (frames) or have there dns servers add an entry
to an IP address (your server), which I have done.

Network Solutions used to have a monopoly on domain registration for .com I think. This has changed.

Currently, I would recommend namecheap.com (enom.com reseller). They are one of the domain registrars with the most features (i.e. they aren't going to nickel and dime you like godaddy or yahoo), and they have good support.

webhostingtalk.com has lots of good information on this stuff (it's like the equivalent of dvinfo.net, except for everything web hosting related like domain registration). godaddy and yahoo are cheaper than namecheap, but they have poorer reputations (i.e. they charge less upfront and nickel and dime you on add-on services).

Don't know about the nikel and diming, but I recently switched from Network Solutions and Earthlink to GoDaddy. I had a nightmare time getting my domain released from Earthlink as they use Melbourne IT in Australia to actually register. It took 8 weeks to actually transfer my domain. Just a heads up for people registering domains.
