Clipwrap and 24P footage
 

I've only just noticed this product; a few questions:

1. How does clipwrap handle 24P HDV footage, since it's encoded within a 60i stream?
2. What is the output type from Clipwrap? Can it convert to ProRes?

Not sure how Clipwrap handles 1080i, since I only use it with 720p HDV... But, it definitely does handle transcoding to ProRes or Apple Intermediate codec. You can also simply re-wrap the footage into QT HDV codec.

Thanks Eric; how well does converted footage play in the Final Cut timeline, since it's essentially still compressed? (i.e. is it choppy?)

I use the DR-HD100 to record M2T streams, and that's what I import to the FCP system. Works like a charm!

The unique function of ClipWrap is that it literally just wraps hdv m2t clips in Quicktime without any transcoding. Therefore it is superfast - it only takes as long as it takes to copy the file.

Clipwrap is ideal for workflows where you capture tapeless HDV to m2t (via OnLocation, Scopebox, or Z7/Z270 with a CF card, etc.) and then all you have to do is wrap them into the Quicktime container and start editing natively in FCP. At this point the files are identical to what you would get if you had captured HDV in FCP.

Thanks Tim; for those of us working in 24P in HDV, there's the issue of reverse telecine at some point in the workflow (I don't buy the concept of working in 60i on the timeline and then removing pulldown on final rendering). At this time, I'm testing whether I can use clipwrap to quickly get my M2T files into a form that's recognizable by compressor and then use it to transcode to AIC or ProRes and remove pulldown at the same time. I've seen online articles indicating that compressor can recognize M2T files, but in version 3.5 at least, it doesn't for me.

Greg. I "Clipwrapped" all the 1080p24 HDV m2t files for a short film I shot with the Sony Z7 to CF cards and they all came into FCP as 1080p24 - pulldown already removed. No need to fiddle around with compressor or prores.
