NAB Roll Call

Just a check to see which DV Info Net members are making the annual pilgrimage to Las Vegas ten days from now for NAB. In previous years we've met on Monday morning for breakfast at the South Hall cafeteria; thinking about moving to the restaurant between Central & North Halls this time around. I'm especially interested in hearing from those who are coming from overseas; UK / Europe, Australia, Japan, etc.

Shawn Lam April 10th, 2009 12:08 PM

I'll be attending NAB this year but won't be arriving until Monday afternoon. I'm not from overseas but my flight-path with take me over the Pacific briefly upon take-off as the Vancouver airport (actually located on the Lulu Island in Richmond, BC) is right on the ocean.

Let me know if something is being scheduled for Tues/Wed as I will have more time then.

Jacques Mersereau April 10th, 2009 12:24 PM

I'll be there. This is like NAB #13 for this weary 'cultural warrior'. I remember when the buzz was Macromedia's Final Cut had a lot of future promise as a cross platform NLE, but SPARK was working and had the amazing quality of DV.

Ah, the good ol' days - NOT!

Chris Hurd April 10th, 2009 01:13 PM

No problem, certainly not opposed to doing a Tuesday morning breakfast hook-up as well.

Come to think of it, this one's my 13th as well... every year since 1996, oy.

Pete Bauer April 10th, 2009 01:54 PM

I'm a late bloomer; this'll be only #4 for me. Sunday PM to Wednesday mid-day.

Chris Beller April 10th, 2009 09:01 PM

I'll be arriving late Sunday night. Hope to have a chance to meet some of the DV Info Net members while I am in town.

Doug Okamoto April 10th, 2009 11:33 PM

I'll be there. Hey, that sounds like a song title...!

This will be my 9th NAB. I'm already too old!

Bob Grant April 10th, 2009 11:37 PM

I should be there, we're flying United :)

Scott Anderson April 11th, 2009 08:03 AM

Wouldn't miss it.

# 12 or 13 for me, as well. Even with all the recent talk these past few years about the 'net making trade shows irrelevant, NAB is still a singular event. Each year, I continue to be blown away by products, companies and techniques I never knew existed.

I'm in for Tuesday morning breakfast - South Hall, or someplace else?

Alister Chapman April 11th, 2009 10:21 AM

I'll be there. Doing a presentation about XDCAM for Sony between 10am and 11am on Monday morning. I fly in Sat night, depart Thursday lunchtime.

David Schmerin April 12th, 2009 10:56 AM

I'll be there all week and beyond... Guess it helps to live here.

Christopher Drews April 12th, 2009 02:46 PM

Shawn Lam April 15th, 2009 12:18 PM

Hey Chris,
Have we set a time and date for the breakfast?

Tuesday is looking good for many.

Dave Rochelle April 16th, 2009 02:00 PM

I'll be attending for the first time & will be there Sunday am through Tuesday night. Does anyone know of worthwhile activites/get-togethers taking place on Sunday - not officially NAB convention-related...? I only have a one-day (Monday) pass to the PPWC and there are no exhibits open Sunday).

Kevin Shahinian April 16th, 2009 08:03 PM

I will be making rounds between vendors and hanging out with the team from Cinevate at their booth on Wednesday 4/22/09. Be sure to stop by - I hear there will be quite a few announcements and they've got an amazing booth planned; its set to be a show highlight.

Joe Bowey April 17th, 2009 11:27 AM

My 10th I think. I'll be there. coming from Glendale, AZ. A little different this year as I have two twin boys. My wife is coming because we ALL need a break. The boys will be there to but not at the convention. Staying at MGM. but will miss the vegas party.

Jim Martin April 17th, 2009 02:24 PM

I'll be there Sunday afternoon and leaving Tuesday morn. I haven't posted for a while due to being layed off from Birns.....oh the economy. Anyway, I look forward to "running into" members of the "motley crew".

Jim Martin

Chris Hurd April 17th, 2009 03:34 PM

Hey Jim shoot me an email please -- the only contact I have for you is through your previous employer.

Jim Martin April 18th, 2009 08:19 AM

It is said, it is done.

Chris Hurd April 18th, 2009 09:22 AM

Didn't get it, please try again Jim -- chris at dvinfo dot net -- thanks in advance,

Charles Papert April 18th, 2009 11:37 AM

I called over to Birns not long ago to buy something and asked for you, Jim--the response was tight-lipped enough for me to read between the lines. Sorry to hear that. Hope you get sorted out soon.

Jim Martin April 18th, 2009 07:05 PM

Thanks for your thoughts.....Pete, of course, is still there so he can help you..

Jason Livingston April 18th, 2009 07:10 PM

Looking at attending maybe a little NAB time on Tuesday but, most likely, I'll first show up at the FCPUG meeting Tuesday night. See you guys there! =)

HELP! Buying Tripoid directly at NAB possible?

Hi together,

for us it's the first time that we'll visit the NAB show and we are exited to see this, but sadly they had open our car twice this week and had stolen our tripod which we need for a shooting on Tuesday morning. So my question:

Will it be possible to buy a tripod (smaller size for EX1) on the first day of the NAB show or is this just a show without any direct selling of products. Is there an other chance to buy such a tripod in Vegas (like Manfrotto HDV or similar), I don't like to drive to L.A. to buy one. lol

Thanks for your help and have fun at the NAB!

Swen

Robert C. Fisher April 19th, 2009 05:32 PM

Well I am going to be there this year for something like the 14th time. I don't think I have missed an NAB since 1994. This year should hold some interesting developments in the Digital Cinema space. I am ready and will be there on Tuesday. Business has been so bad this year I didn't think I would be able to go but rooms are really cheap this year so that has helped a lot.

Swen,

The larger manufacturers don't really sell merchandise from the show floor. But a long standing tradition if you hang around for the final day (Thursday) is to feel free to make any of the exhibitors an offer on their show floor stock. Sometimes they aren't set up for sales - but I've had luck in previous years reminding whoever's in charge of the booth that if they sell me something, they won't have to pay to ship it back to the office.

I have a few Matthews stands I bought that way years ago.

I *believe* that some of the retail outfits have booths where they sell show specials.

But I might be thinking of other smaller shows and EXPOs where sales are normal.

Check out the map as soon as you arrive and look for Retail sounding names like 5th Ave camera, etc.

Good luck.

Chris Hurd April 20th, 2009 08:51 AM

We'll try for 8:30am this morning at Banners (the restaurant inside the LVCC between North & Central Halls)... check the round area up at the front, come on up and say hello. If it ain't us, you might make new friends anyway. Will repeat tomorrow.

Swen Goebbels April 20th, 2009 10:06 AM

Bill,

thank you very much for your answer... so I think I'll give it a try to buy a tripod on NAB. That'll be a new kind of "gambling" in Vegas for me. :-)

Best wishes,
Swen
