Anyone attending NAB?

I really really really want to go this year. Is anyone here already making plans to go?

Brian Rhodes February 17th, 2010 10:21 AM

I will be there already book reservations.

Paul Cronin February 17th, 2010 10:46 AM

Any DVinfo.net packages?

Planning on going but would like to support DVinfo if Chris has a package deal?

Taky Cheung February 17th, 2010 11:18 PM

I'll be going this year... only this time I will be an exhibitor too in the Comer booth .. hehe

Lorinda Norton February 18th, 2010 12:40 AM

Hey Clint! I'm planning to be there Monday-Wednesday. Hope to see you!

Dean Sensui February 18th, 2010 02:44 AM

I'm planning to be there from the 11 - 16.

Paul Cronin February 18th, 2010 08:27 AM

Sounds like a lot of DV'ers will be there which is great.

Anyone have good options on the best hotel/show ticket options?

Clint Harmon February 18th, 2010 08:49 AM

Thats what I would like to see to. A nice package deal on the whole thing.

Since I have never been, I am curious if I should get the smart pass to go to some of the seminars. Anyone have any thoughts on what tickets to get?

Paul Cronin February 18th, 2010 09:31 AM

Clint this might help.

2010 NAB Show - Registration - Packages and Discounts

Chris Hurd February 18th, 2010 03:00 PM

Thanks for posting that link, Paul -- it's the one I was going to refer
to in my reply explaining that we haven't opened a travel agency yet
(thus, no package deals to offer).

Hotel rates appear to be very good this year. Airfare is also highly affordable
if you book now. DV Info Net is a media sponsor of the annual Final Cut Pro
User Group's SuperMeet, over at the Rio on Tuesday night, April 13th. Would
be happy to meet any and all DVi folks at that event. Even if you're not an
FCP person, they throw a great raffle at that event which should appeal to
just about everybody. As usual, I'll be hanging out at the bar.

Paul Cronin February 18th, 2010 03:18 PM

Always happy to help Chris.

Look forward to meeting you and all the other great DVinfo.net gang.

Trevor Meeks February 19th, 2010 01:28 AM

I'll be there along with my buddy (a fellow DV-er) Scott Brown.

David Stoneburner February 19th, 2010 06:37 PM

My trip was cancelled last year, but I'll be there this year. The FCP usergroup meetup sounds fun.

Alister Chapman February 20th, 2010 12:13 PM

I'll be there this year. You'll find me on the Convergent Design Booth. I really, really, really must try to make it to the FCP meet.

Paul Hudson February 20th, 2010 06:32 PM

I didn't go last year for the first time in years. I was pretty disappointed in the show in '08. I will be returning this year. I am hoping for a great show.

Despite the moniker "FCPUG SuperMeet," the event is not just for FCP users. One has only to look at the sponsor list to see that. We try our best to put on a show for everyone. It just so happens most of us use FCS.

We try to show off the very best solutions and if that happens to be solutions from Avid or Adobe then so be it. We often feature new tools as well as tips and tricks. Only time constraints keep us from showing off everything we want to show off.

SuperMeets are more about coming together, networking and helping each other. Its a chance to meet many people whom you have only met online but never in person. Its a chance to collaborate with like minded people and get your problems solved. The SuperMeet show is just part of the experience.

This year we will debut the "Open Screen Theater" which will be a small informal area where filmmakers can show off clips of their work and discuss with each other how it was done. Its a first come, first serve sort of thing. Just sign up, get up and show off.

We also intend to live stream the event for those that cannot make it to Vegas.

Big trade shows are not about simply looking at the new toys. You can learn more about them staying home and reading the PRs and info on the respective web sites. They are about getting out of the house and into the faces of those smarter than you. And its just damn fun.

http://www.supermeet.com/

Tickets are on sale now for only $10.00 (plus ticket fee) and Hotels and flights are cheapest I've seen in years.

Alister Chapman February 21st, 2010 02:10 PM

Looking forward to it!

Paul Cronin February 21st, 2010 02:31 PM

Already signed up and looking forward to the SuperMeet.

Dylan Couper February 24th, 2010 03:34 PM

I'll be there... if you can get me out of the bars/clubs/casinos/strippers/gun ranges, I might even make it to the convention center for a few hours. :)

Jim Andrada February 25th, 2010 01:17 AM

I'll be there as well.

Jose Ortiz February 26th, 2010 07:08 PM

I will be there as well!

Jawad Mir March 2nd, 2010 03:02 PM

I am in process of looking for deals but have registered for NAB

Chris, the FCP get together, is that of any cost? It's my first time at NAB so forgive ignorance.

thanks

Michael Horton March 2nd, 2010 03:19 PM

The FCPUG SuperMeet is $11.24 each and that price will go up March 16 so get your tickets now. The admission ticket will also give you 2 raffle tickets, some food and the chance to buy Chris Hurd a drink.

Go here for all the info plus links to good deals on hotels

Jawad Mir March 2nd, 2010 04:11 PM

Thanks Michael,

Just need a little advice. Since it's my first time, do people who have attended here in the past feel that they have made some new friends and gotten new opportunities.

Chris Hurd March 2nd, 2010 04:19 PM

Hi Jawad, that's really what NAB and its associated night-time activities such as the SuperMeet are all about.

Jawad Mir March 2nd, 2010 04:51 PM

i figured but just wanted to get an idea. thanks :)

Michael Horton March 2nd, 2010 04:54 PM

Yeah. The SuperMeet itself is more about connecting with others than the show. The show will teach you something you need to know but its the people you meet that makes the night special. You never know who you will meet that can change your life. But thats up to you. Its not an easy thing meeting new people and if you are shy its best to bring along a friend who is not shy. That way you got an arm to lean on.

Michael Clark March 3rd, 2010 10:44 AM

Have there been any rumors that Glidecam will be updating their HD series (1000, 2000, 4000)? I am wanting to buy an HD2000 but not if a new one is coming out soon. To my understanding, they don't release new series that often.

Jim Martin March 3rd, 2010 11:15 AM

I'm trying to sleep with the right person to get a free hotel room......so I might be there

Get to the SuperMeet early and hang out in the halls outside the banquet rooms. Thats where the Lingerie models will be, and yes fellows, once again the Lingerie show will be at the Rio same time as SuperMeet. Grab your iPhones.

Bill Davis March 3rd, 2010 08:26 PM

I've got to bow down in homage to my dear friend Michael Horton - the only guy I've ever known who is smart enough AND lucky enough to schedule an event that consists of 17 miles of walking hallways to get to the ballroom - and just at the right moment, when your "show floor exhausted feet" really can't be convinced to take another step - there ahead like a shimmering desert mirage are the ONLY two words in the english language that could conceivably revive legions of exhausted video makers to press on ... LINGERIE SHOW.

Somebody really should set up a camera right outside that homage to corsets and lace and watch as the videograher's - male and female alike - have their brains suddenly re-wired by passing under archway after archway picturing corsets and cleavage.

You can just hear their brain synapses snapping - trying to figure out how the signage lighting was done and struggling with questions like where the heck to try and hide a wireless transmitter in THAT sort of shot.

Sublime.

Michael Horton March 3rd, 2010 08:42 PM

Eloquently said my friend. A true blend of creative and beauty all in one hallway.

Cant wait to see you Bill.

Jim Bucciferro March 4th, 2010 02:39 PM

Nab

Hello folks,
I have decided to go to NAB this year - I fully do not know what to expect, except that it will be big. For now I'm just doing the exhibitor pass just to see what's out there and to save some money.

For those of you that have been already, do you have any advice for us NAB newbies?

Thanks
Jim

Michael Horton March 4th, 2010 02:55 PM

Its not so overwhelming as you might think. Stick to the South Hall if Digital video is what you are into. The other halls have stuff that is more for Broadcast and TV stations and high end audio solutions.

Get a cheap hotel cause all you need is a bed and roof a bathroom. You wont be in the room much so who cares if its got a view. Unless you are with a friend who does care.

Bring business cards and comfortable shoes and socks and breath spray. Socks are more important than shoes for comfort. Its the standing around on concrete that kill your feet, not so much the miles of walking. Just ask the folks who work the booths. Look at their faces at the end of the day. Scary.

Meet people and get out at night. Go to the SuperMeet, Media Motion Ball and Red User Event. Not into those, then ask here for other events you might find interesting. The nighttime events are great places to meet folks.

Hang out at the new Post Pit in the South Hall. Free demos of lots of cool things and lots of very smart people will be hanging around there. Use it as a meet up place.

If you come alone to NAB then it can get lonely and overwhelming. But if you are an out going sort of fellow, who doesn't smell bad, then there will be lots of folks to hook up with.

It's the people you will meet that make it all worth it. So come with a smile and look to have fun. You can read all about the new toys when you get back to the hotel.

Jim Andrada March 4th, 2010 02:58 PM

Do not under any circumstance wear new shoes - like I did last year! My feet were killing me!!! Old comfortable well broken-in shoes only as you'll probably walk several miles a day. And of course, nice cushy socks! I used to work these kinds of trade shows years ago and I remember one in San Fran that ran from 10 AM to 10 PM. I thought I'd never walk right again after 12 hours

Aside from that they have a service that lets you pick the exhibits you particularly want to see and tells you where they're located and you can check it on your i-phone to use as a guide in getting around. Very nice and I used it a lot last year. I also made approximate "appointments" ahead of time with some of the software guys I really wanted to talk with and that worked out very well for me. Not sure they will all do it, but the guys I really wanted to talk to at least gave me a time range when they would make themselves available for a discussion. I actually managed to get a half-hour hands-on tutorial from one of the outfits but I think this was more luck than anything else.

Ken Willinger March 6th, 2010 12:20 AM

I'll be there! Bringing the wife this year... will be a little awkward with the lingerie show models all over the place. Just look straight ahead!

Andy Shipsides March 6th, 2010 08:40 AM
