2010 DVC/UWOL Charity Challenge - Sign Up!

Hey Everyone!

Dylan is slammed with work so I'm calling out all you narrative and wildlife filmmakers in DV Info land. Sign up now for our annual charity challenge!

On Thursday, Dec. 9, you'll be given the theme, then you will have until Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011 to submit your film.

Guidelines will be pretty much the same as they always are but we'll give specifics the day it starts (or sooner, if Dylan gets free). We'll also be talking about the donation pool--we want the winner to have lots of money to give to his or her favorite charity! You don't have to sign up to donate, and you don't have to donate to sign up. But you'll feel great if you do! :)

So sign up now and keep watching for more!!

Henry Williams December 1st, 2010 07:00 PM

I'm in with jingle bells on, Lorinda :) Really excited to be doing my first challenge with the VG10, especially after I had so much fun competing in DVC 19.

Now I just need to start second guessing the theme and writing tons of high concept existential sci-fi horror ;)

Marc Burleigh December 2nd, 2010 11:13 AM

Count me in. The DVChallenge was fun. Let's see what happens when we mix it up with those bear-catchers over on UWOL.

So, what's already been done? "Cold" and "Gifts". So what are the possible themes for end-of-year DV capture that can straddle narrative and nature? "Red"? "Lights"? "Cheer"? "Snow"? "Aurora Borealis"?

Just remember -- some of us are sweltering under a hot sun and thinking more of beaches than blankets down here!

Trond Saetre December 2nd, 2010 03:26 PM

Count me in for the charity fun!

Bill Thesken December 2nd, 2010 04:15 PM

I'll give it a shot, let's rock and roll.

Henry Williams December 2nd, 2010 06:23 PM

You're a lucky man Marc. London's just ground to a halt under a foot of snow!

Marc Burleigh December 2nd, 2010 08:43 PM

Yeah, Henry, I'm reading about it: slow Eurostars, airports restricted, sounds awful. Here it's just so hot and steamy I could do with a blast of cool air (but maybe only for 15 mins or so).

Chris Barcellos December 2nd, 2010 09:08 PM

Has it been a year already..... okay, I'm in.

Lorinda Norton December 2nd, 2010 10:59 PM

Seriously thought about sitting this one out but some of your comments are making it irresistible! Sounds like great fun. I'm in. (Hearing those jingle bells from here, Henry!) :)

Dale Guthormsen December 3rd, 2010 11:23 AM

I will give it a go once again, even if I way out of most your leagues!!!

Lorinda Norton December 3rd, 2010 11:30 AM

Are you kidding, Dale? You do great work! By the way, I'm thinking about trying my hand at a nature film for this one...unless it gets really cold outside, of course. :)

Finn-Erik Faale December 4th, 2010 08:29 AM

I will give it a try.

Andrew Hood December 4th, 2010 07:06 PM

Alright, you've twisted my arm. I'm in.

Lorinda Norton December 4th, 2010 09:48 PM

LOL! I would apologize for the behind-the-scenes arm-twisting but the challenge just doesn't seem right without you, Andrew. :)

Lorinda, "cold" is not a valid excuse for not trying a nature film. ;)

Mugurel Dragusin December 5th, 2010 11:38 AM

I am in, of course!

David Cummings December 5th, 2010 04:47 PM

sign me up!

Clint Harmon December 6th, 2010 01:15 PM

I will join in on this one. Hopefully I will be able to spend more then 5 hours on it this time.

Dylan Couper December 6th, 2010 10:01 PM

I am IN...

...and this time I MEAN IT!

Graeme Hay December 7th, 2010 02:00 AM

I'm In Too

Last Year was fun, so I'm going to try again this year!

Charles Dasher December 7th, 2010 08:19 AM

A first time for everything. Happy holidays!

Craig Bellaire December 7th, 2010 05:32 PM

wildlife

Does that include children? 8^)

Kris Holodak December 8th, 2010 09:00 AM

Believe it or not I'll be less busy during this challenge than I was for the last one, and I might even be able to corral my nieces and nephews into helping me out so Blue won't have to be my only star.

Kevin Railsback December 8th, 2010 05:26 PM

Have a super full plate right now but I'll sign up just in case something opens up to give me time to work on this.

Alan Emery December 8th, 2010 06:52 PM

Count me in for this one!

Bruce Foreman December 8th, 2010 08:57 PM

Sign me up for this one, too.

Pete Bauer December 8th, 2010 11:10 PM

Ok, I've been arm-twisted into it. I'm in.

Lorinda Norton December 8th, 2010 11:26 PM

LOL! Wish I had more time...this arm-twisting is getting kind of fun. :) Welcome back, Pete! We haven't seen you since something like DVC 3. Let the fun begin...

Glad to see everyone else who has signed up during this busy season! Theme announcement TOMORROW. Still time to sign up!

Here's an idea, Trond, how about we swap--you do a narrative film and I'll get out there in the cold! :)

When will I learn to keep my mouth shut and just go out in the cold to film... :)
Can't promise any narrative, but it could be fun to try it out once. Never done that before.
Now the charity question is, how do I get the wildlife to talk, haha?

Meryem Ersoz December 9th, 2010 01:49 PM

wow, so if we don't don't finish, it is the double whammy of shame...the sharkbait wall of shame!

I'm gonna see what I can shoot in one day with my Flip, so I'm in -- barely, but in. I have a new dog and a new cat, so I'm sure I can do something holiday-festive. Fake reindeer antlers and santa hats for everyone!

I forgot how exciting it was to sign up for one of these.

Dick Mays December 9th, 2010 05:20 PM

In, or on the wall, one or the other.

Lorinda Norton December 9th, 2010 07:06 PM

Meryem--welcome back! Gonna be fun to see your perspective on the theme. :)

Sign up remains open for anyone else who would like to join the fun!

Meryem Ersoz December 10th, 2010 07:47 AM

PERSPECTIVE, huh?

a kitten-cam, that's the ticket...I'll title it HOW TO DESTROY THE CHRISTMAS TREE.

I knew these pets would make this easy...

all I need is a "making of" featurette accompanying it, showing me rigging a camera to the kitten and having my eyeballs removed during the ensuing tussle.

Kitten-cam??? That sounds perfect. Sadly for me Blue has landed herself on bed rest with a torn ACL so I'm not sure who I'm going to rope into staring for me now.

Lorinda Norton December 12th, 2010 12:46 PM

Ouch! On a back leg? Under other circumstances I would say that given Blue's size she would be able to star in a limited capacity within a week or so. But when my little dog tore his ACL he had three other legs to help him out.

He couldn't undergo surgery so it was left to heal the best it could. It reached a point fairly quickly that he could walk on it without a noticeable limp; he only carried it when he ran. But I would think it is going to be a lot more of a hardship for your little Blue.

Kris Holodak December 12th, 2010 01:23 PM

Yes the back leg. It's that sad mix of pathetic and funny to watch her try to walk on her stumpy leg with her bum leg held up. At first "bed rest" was easy because she would just stay wherever I set her down. But now that the pain pills are working she's getting impatient with me not letting her run around the back yard. She is enjoying the princess treatment of being carried up and down all the stairs though. Maybe I could cast her as some sort of notorious crime boss who just sits back and lets her minions do her dirty work.

Cole Seidl December 13th, 2010 01:46 PM

I think I'll be back by then... I'm in.

Lorinda Norton December 16th, 2010 06:29 PM

Dylan just got word from Guy Cochran at DVeStore that the winner of our charity challenge will receive a Stellar Lighting Diva Ring light Photo/Video Diva Ring Light - DVeStore !!

I bought one that has already been put to lots of good use--almost every day last week, as a matter of fact. So easy for fast interviews--can be used as a key or fill and makes older skin like *ahem* mine look its best. Though it won't help you nature/wildlife types in the field it sure would come in handy for a documentary that includes interviews. And for narrative films it certainly has its uses, as well.

Thanks a bunch, Guy! We always appreciate your support of the Challenge.

Sign up is still open, so if anyone out there has been thinking about it, now is a great time to jump in! :)

Jeff Hendricks December 26th, 2010 05:05 PM

Is it too late to sign up? If not I'm gonna try...for the first time in...well...too long.

Trond Saetre December 26th, 2010 05:20 PM

Welcome onboard, Jeff.
It is never to late to sign up to have fun.
