An Evening at Lost Creek Ranch - 5D2 Raw video

Took the 5d2 for an evening stroll and try to get use to the raw video work flow. Used only one lens, a 24-105 f4L.

Had a couple of Komputerbay 1000X 64gig cards.

Also had a Mosaic VAF5D2 filter used.

Conformed and slight grade in Resolve lite finishing in Edius.

Re: An Evening at Lost Creek Ranch - 5D2 Raw video

Very nice. I noted some softness and then read your notes on Vimeo that some clips used crop mode with the AA filter. That would explain it! I also saw some of the dynamic range limitations you noted. I wonder if shooting at a lower exposure would have helped or hurt. (My feeling is that it would help. My eye was drawn to the parts that were blown out and not to noise.)

Do you recall what resolution(s) you shot? That also accounts for some of the softness. Ideally with a Bayer sensor, we'd be shooting at about 1.4x the target resolution. (2688x1512 for a 1080p target.) Of course, with people in the shot, we'd be happy with the current resolution. As long as the eyes are sharp, we're happy. We don't need to see every blemish and the background will be slightly blurred. With pure nature shots the eye really drills into those details!

Thanks Jon,

A lot of shots were in crop mode. I used 1728x972 16:9 all the time to get me.
Also to note, that I wanted to get good framing so I chose auto in preview which will give proper framing in crop mode at grayscale and low res. I believe that plus the VAF exacerbates the situation in my shooting in crop.

Even with the softness, avoiding moire, capturing wide dynamic range, and avoiding h.264 artifacts during capture really rock. Standard MOV shooting wouldn't compete.

We now have our camera back - debricked. Hopefully, we'll shoot this weekend. I'm looking forward to finishing the projuct and showing our RAW greenscreen results! (All shot in RAW Crop without the VAF.)
