I'm a Final Cut guy and have been since version 1.0.2, having learned non-linear editing on the Big Boy AVID Media Composer running on a $200k workstation in my media college in 1998 - 99.
The real problem I've found with people starting out in FCP (like I did 9.5 years ago) is realizing you have essentially four workspaces (Viewer, Canvas, Timeline and Browser) and what you are doing is contextual to what workspace you are CURRENTLY in. Once you get used to looking for the highlighted window title bar as a matter of course, your life gets easier. But the caveat is: non-linear editing ISN'T word processing for video, as much as Apple hype would have you believe. Put the time and effort in and you'll be rewarded. I had a fool for a teacher: I taught myself as back in '99 there weren't any training DVDs or online forums like there are today. BUT, I came from a recognized AVID training facility so AT LEAST I had the basic knowledge of the process. FCE may well fulfill your needs but as has been mentioned before here there is no upgrade path to FCP. I should also point out that historically Apple has not allowed upgrades to the Educational versions of FCP either so buyer beware.
