Demo versions should start showing up at Apple stores and some other retailers this week.

I am very ready for a new dual processor G5 this fall. But it certainly is a lot of other equipment I would like to shop as well, so I guess I need to make a new priority list.

Keep in mind the rumors of new monitors this fall as well. Leading the pack of rumors is a new 17", this time a cinema display as well as a possible 30" cinema display.

Funny, after thinking about the G5's, I just went out today and bought a G4/1.25. I will definitely upgrade to a G5, but after seeing how slow they are in coming, and wondering when the *real* OS will be released for them, I can wait until spring. Right now I need another machine to just render 3d animation and DV 24/7 while I do other things on my G4/733 and TiBook... this new machine should be nearly twice as fast. I don't need OSX, dual processors aren't going to help me; all my apps are OS 9 which I prefer to boot into. That's what Apple sells this machine for, and at $1,300 it's very attractive. I'm glad that Apple still remembers there are guys like me.
The more I thought about the G5 the more I remembered the PowerMac 8100 I got back in 1996. Just not quite ready to ride the crest of the G5 wave. Now when that 30" cinema display comes out I might start to get interested ;-) |
