There is no video?

Has anyone ever seen an error like this? I'm having trouble capturing in FinalCut. Video looks fine in the viewfinder. Device control works fine. I can even see the picture in the capture window in FinalCut. But when I go to capture it says "the operation could not be completed as there is no video." What gives?

There are a dozen or so things that could potentially be an issue; try posting more details such as the camera/deck you're capturing from, the format/codec type and what version FCP you're using. Then those with help can chime in.

Footage was shot on an XL2. I'm using an Optura 60 to capture. Have previously captured just fine other tapes from same shoot using same equipment. I recently added a second external harddrive to my system, but this is capturing to the same external drive I always use. Version of FinalCut is 5.14. Interestingly, twice today, both of my external drives have just lost connection. Rebooting them seems to restore the connection.

Boy, that sure implies you're having some kind of firewire issue. I know some Canon cameras are finicky with FCP, especially with multiple firewire devices. Try unplugging all firewire devices except the camera, then capture a short clip to the internal drive and see if it works. Also try capturing with the XL2 and see if you have the same problems. These things may help you zero in on the problem.

Hey Marco,

I had a problem like this once. In the Log and Capture window under the Clip Settings tab there are two tickboxes, one for Video and one for Audio... I found the Video box unmaked after someone else used the suite...

Hope this helps.

Marco,

Read the sticky on the top of this category about FCP not seeing your camera; it's relative to Canon cameras and FW issues. Read through that thread and see if any of that helps sort out your issues.

Thanks all. Boyd's recommendation seems to have helped. Is there a protocol to follow on how to connect multiple drives?
