1080 25fsp transcode to Prores422

Workflow for HDV 1080 25fsp transcoding to Prores 422 progressive.

If you want to mix Canon 25F and 25FPS material in Final Cut you can use a 25p timeline, it is all good, and renders the 25FPS material (coming from the HV30).

But, if you want to work in ProRes, you need to transcode the HV30 25PFS material .
25fps is progressive in a 1080i signal, two fields in the same timing, each field with half the information. Although it is progressive .. you see interlace jaggies after conversion to progressive ProRes! The two fields are not exactly in the same time.

I tested many ways in capturing and transcoding in Compressor to create a signal that was real progressive as the XHA1 F25 is. With fine motion blur. You need to de-interlace the 25fps for that in Compressor. I can show you that, with some images.

camera: Canon HV30 EU with updated firmware
recording Cine mode HDV 1080 25fps (25p over 1080i)
editing: FCP 6.06
QT: 7.6.2
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
conclusion :
* capturing in 1080i50 or 25fps makes no difference
* although there is a minimal blur, interlaced jaggies are clearly visible
* only de-interlace in Compressor creates real progressive and blur
(de-interlace filter Fast & field output progressive)
* keep your original in native field setting as they are
* if you render the HV30 HDV material in a 25P timeline in FCP all is ok
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope this helps.
