I've recomendation from my friend how upload to youtube w/o recompression:
your video+audio must be under 350 Kbps in flv container with resolution 320x240
video is H263 sorenson codec and audio - mp3 and duration of video no more than 10 min.

How do you think that compares to encoding 1280x720 @ 5200 kbps?
And why use YouTube when it is so much worse in quality than Vimeo?

I can upload to rapidshare or p2p 1920x1080 at 50 or 100 Mbps videos.
But if you need resonable size/quality and big auditorium for your video
you must do compromises. For youtube possible also 1280x720p24 H264 1Mbps (~3min)
but with hack and size limited to ~30MB equal to 10 min of 350 Kbps.

Web videos from Final Cut Pro

I found this online a while back, sorry I don't have a link.

To compress and encode video for the web from Final Cut. Go to File, Export, and choose Using Quicktime Conversion. Name the file, make sure the format is Quicktime movie, and click on options. Click on the settings, and under compression type select H264. This is the latest quicktime compression.

Now click Size. Click the dimensions tab and click on custom. Web videos are seldom encoded at the videos original size, because the larger the size the longer it takes to watch and download.

The resolution of fullsize standard definition video is 720 X 480. Export at 480 X 360, this retains the aspect ratio of the movie video. Set letter box I'll click OK.

Now encode the audio. Make sure Sound is checked and click on settings. Under format select IMA 4:1.

Under rate select 22.05. These settings will help shrink the file size. And hit OK. And OK one more time.

And finally hit save. You have to wait a few minutes for the movie to export. And there's a video ready for the web.

I want to upload 720 x405 (16:9) format to YouTube in similar quality.

My videos are ONLY 8:30 secs each.

What did you do with Rapidshare?

I usually output at 2.25MBps CBR (constant bit rate) and use an H.264 codec.

After trying several different settings including various h.264, divx, etc. These settings work the best in Vegas for Letterboxed HDV on YouTube. You get the High quality setting and it renders quick.
