Today, we completed qualification of Avid NewsCutter Adrenaline and Media Composer Adrenaline on Windows XP. we expect to qualify Media Composer on the Mac shortly.

When clips are recorded to FireStore products in the "Avid OMF" DTE file format, it is possible to use the files instantly in the Avid timeline.

In addition to NewsCutter and Media Composer, FireStore with DTE Technology also supports Xpress DV and Xpress Pro on Mac and PC.

Any idea when this software will be available for Mac OSX??

Hello Kalyn,

Currently FireStore DV Conversion Suite is available for Windows 98/ME/2000/NT only. Development continues on DV Conversion Suite, and we are focusing on new features such as additional file format support.

We have benchmarked FireStore DV File Converter running under Virtual PC 6.1 on a 1G Powerbook (OS 10.2.3) and find that it works well and converts at roughly 2X realtime. For example, a 10 minute video clip would take 20 minutes to convert.

it does optical flow calculations, I hope they add a 24fps converter. I can't see buying a camera when the one I have is superior the the DVX100.

I have a Pannasonic DVCPro25

I'd like to see how it stacks up against Vegas, Twixtor, and the RealViz software and for After Effects users Continuum Pro.

24p QuickTime and 24p AVI Type 2 -- With the popularity of the 24p DV format, FOCUS Enhancements has added 24p support to QuickTime and AVI Type-2 DTE formats to FireStore, which will enable users of camcorders such as the Panasonic AG-DVX100A to access DTE Technology within native 24p NLE applications, including Apple Final Cut Pro and Sony Vegas Video. This will be demonstrated on a FireStore FS-3 with prototype software.

Pinnacle Liquid Edition and Vortex native file formats -- FOCUS Enhancements has in beta software enabling FireStore DR-DV5000 and FS-3 to support for Pinnacle's Liquid Edition DV editing products and Vortex News solutions.

Sorry for the late reply. Been trying to get back on track since NAB.

Pinnacle Liquid Edition support is expected in an upcoming release and will be available as a free download from the Focus website for FireStore FS-3 and DR-DV5000 owners.

24p support of QuickTime and AVI2 is also expected in an upcoming release and will be available as a free download for FS-3 owners.

MXF and HDV support were essentially working technology demonstrations on FireStore hardware. Stay tuned to the Focus website for information regarding support of these formats in FireStore products.

I was wondering would this update be any good for me ... I use FS3 bought in March04 and i use it docked with Panny AGDV200. I already use HD Bypass featire to use HD from the FS3 unit withou taking out and connected to my PC for edit.

The new version 1.2 firmware brings a few new features...

1. Scene Marking - It is now possible to mark scenes while you are shooting or playing back to up to ten, pre-named folders on disk. This allows for easy access to particular clips when it is time to edit. A lot of NLE systems will let you import an entire folder of clips to the bin for easy clip management.

2. Loop Record - This is similar to the current Retro Disk feature, where it is possible to loop record video to available disk drive space. This is useful for security and analysis applications.

3. DV Bypass - This is specific to DR-DV5000 users who use the JVC GY-DV5000 camcorder where the camcorder has been modified for 52-pin operation. This feature allows the camcorder to connect to external devices such as NLE systems through FireStore's DV I/O port.

4. Overall System Performance Enhancement - We have enhanced both the record and playback engines in FS-3 and DR-DV5000 for increased responsiveness.

This is a free upgrade for existing FS-3 and DR-DV5000 owners. To upgrade firmware on one of these units, simply download the software update from the Focus support site, copy it to a FireWire disk drive, connect the drive to FireStore and select OS Upgrade from the Setup menu.

Forgive me if this is a dumb question...

We are going to purchase a DVX100A camera. Is the FS-3 okay to use with it, or should we purchase the FS-4 when it becomes available?

I'll need to shoot footage before the FS-4's release in December.

In the next year, we will also purchase a DVCPro camera. My hunch is to purchase the FS-3 for now, and then purchase the FS-4 in December. That way we'll have both cameras covered.

You can use the FS-3 with the DVX-100A. You will have to power the FS-3 using an Anton/Bauer, V-Mount or NP battery (or you could use something like a 14V Bescor with a 4-pin connector). The upcoming version 1.3 firmware (now in beta) for the FS-3 will also support 24p QuickTime and AVI Type 2 when the DVX is set to Advanced 24p mode. The FS-4 will also have this feature.

I just found this part of the thread so if you dont mind I reposted my message here is it seems a much better place to be seen.

Is the FS-4 able to handle higher bit rate streams like ones from DVCPro cameras? Also what is the maximum bit rate the FS-4 can consistantly handle without any problems recording? Can the stream be a none standard format (other than .DV, .MOV, .AVI) and still record it? Thanks."

Also for higher bitrate video formats we may need larger hard drives than 80G. Do you plan on giving the option to swap out the internal hard drives and make them upgradeable to large capacities? If not what physical size/type of drive are you using in your product so the more adventurous DIYers can attempt to swap out the drives themselves and still use your great interface - making it possible to suit their special needs. Thanks.

Hi Brett,

As was answered by Don Berube elsewhere, the FS-4 only records 25Mb/s DV currently.

The drive used in the FS-4 will be a 5400RPM Hitachi TravelStar. We do not recommend changing the drive on FS-4 and it will void the warranty. The main reason is that we cannot guarantee the performance of drives other than the Hitachi TravelStar. We have seen some drives that were less than optimal based on their thermal and shock performance. I expect as capacities increase on the TravelStar line, we will probably add them to the line-up.

MX4 Video Mixer Review
 

I have an MX4 mixer that I have been testing. Coming from 3 Sony VX2100 cameras through 100 feet of S Video cable into the MX4, the picture looks really good. This is in part to the filtering, and partly as a result or the 10 bit digitizer. After talking with Focus and getting to know the product I have two feature that I have tested that I like, and would like to present in this post.

1. The firmware can be upgraded using the ethernet interface. This means that for the life of the product it will continue to improve with software upgrades that add features. As an early adopter, I was able to speak with the guys at Focus who could not make promises, but seemed pretty open to ideas for possible features in the future. This seems like a good way to keep the product current with the market.

2. You can import and use jpeg images. Today I imported some images and was easily able to tranisition (700 choices) from live video, to an image, back to live video, and back to a different image. I also had the image appear in the PIP window.

There are a few features that will be coming out in the next three or four weeks that I am looking forward to testing, but right now I feel comfortable stating the following: The people I spoke with were positive and helpful, the video quality was good enough for a dvd shown on a big screen TV after 100 ft of S-cable, and the upgradability and video store make this unit something special.

I am taking the S-video output into a Canopus A/D and saving the digital video on an FS-1. I also did a test where I came out of the cameras 1394 port and into the canopus D/A and into the MX4. This works well, so if I ever have a long enough run were I need the digital signal and digital repeaters, there is a viable solution. I recognize that running digital the whole way would optimize the signal quality, but this solution is a lot less costly and is providing results that would be difficult to distiguish from my all digital work flow. Not for a wedding, but seminars, sporting events, churches, dance recitals, etc,... it seems pretty good for the cost vs time savings.

02/01/2005 - Canon Distributes FS-4 DV Disk Recorder For Mini-DV Camcorders

Users Of Canon Prosumer Camcorders Can Now Save Time With The New FireStore FS-4 And FS-4 Pro Direct To EditTM(DTE) Recording Device

LAKE SUCCESS, NY, Feb. 1, 2005 — Canon U.S.A., Inc. today announced another solution for filmmakers, documentarians and videographers by becoming a distributor of the FireStore FS-4 DTE digital video-disk recorder from FOCUS Enhancements. The FireStore FS-4 and accessories will be sold through Canon U.S.A. Authorized video dealers beginning in February.

A companion for Canon prosumer camcorders, the FS-4 recorder enables DV streams to be recorded to the unit with or without a MiniDV tape inserted. Footage is recorded as edit ready files that can be imported and used immediately by most DV based non-linear editing systems, saving time, and providing a backup. The FS-4 recorder will be available in a 40GB (approximately 3 hours) model, While the FS-4 Pro recorder, which offers more advanced features will be available in 40GB and 80GB (approximately 6 hours) configurations.
