Just as an FYI, we also now have a 40GB 2-pack available ($845) and a 2GB Solid State disk drive.

Is there a hybrid adapter (in a future FS model I suppose) where we can use the much more affordable 3.5", or 2.5" laptop-sized drives? I find the pricing for custom-sized firestore drives insulting (no offense).

Andrew,
The drive prices I provided are for the internal drive slot on FS-3 and DR-DV5000. However, you can connect any FireWire drive to the HDD port on the side of the unit.

Swapping hd's won't come until the next generation of devices.

You would carry spare hd's in your bag and insert them into the read/write device, which would be built-into the camera like the present tape mechanism. There would be an integrated firestore SLOT, very much like the CF card slots in digital cameras, making external firestore peripherals obsolete..that would allow you to pop in/eject hard drives at will.
