As with any progressive format, like film, pans should be done slowly. You will learn the right speed with practice. Your shutter speed will also have an impact. If there is a subject in your pan, say a surfer, pan with the subject on high speed pans. I would recommend a Pola and lots of ND filters while shooting waves in sunny Hawaii. Or the dual Pola variable ND trick.

Can I regain audio control with pre-amp (DXA-8)
 

Can I regain some or any audio control with my hd10u by using a device such as beachtek's DXA-8 which has a pre-amp, gain, and other controls, or will auto functions in the camera simply cancel out my efforts. And if so, then is there any way to regain in-camera audio control. I figured enough time have passed so that if there is a way someone would have figured it out by now.

I own a Jvc Jyhd10 and a Canon Xl2....My cousin who dabbles in film making came up from Pittsburgh. He owns an ag-dvx100a. We did a shoot together and I think he was very very impressed with the results from the JVC. Now I'm not gonna say that the dvx100a isn't a great camera because it is. However at the end of the day when we started comparing Raw footage on a 28 television the Jvc definately held it's own and many there said the picture was better. Having said that I find that the Jvc is not an easy camera to work with, but if you take your time you can get great results. I do love XL2 as well :).

Hey, I think they used the HD10 on the extras to the movie "Flight of the Phoenix". Check it out - during one of the shots that horrible green light shows on the footage. I'm pretty sure it's the HD10 or the GR1.

Cool... although I haven't seen this movie yet, just out of spite, because I'm such a huge fan of the original version by Robert Aldritch.

lens adapter sizes- 52mm, 58mm + 72mm
 

Never having screwed one on, I feel quite naive about lens adapters. If memory serves--for one reason or another--both 52mm and 58mm lens adapters work with the GR-* cams.

I want to buy not rent an wide-angle adapter, but I'm using an XL-1, which is 72mm (so I'm told). (The idea is to get an adapter I can use for both, if possible.) I called up the store and the man said a 72mm adapter could never work with a GR-*, and a 52/58mm could never work with an XL-1.

Is this correct?

get a 58mm converter and then step up in the case of the canon and step down in the case of the HD1

In June of 2003 I bought an HD10 from Industrial Video in the Cleveland, Ohio area. As I recall, I paid a couple hundred bucks over the B&H price at the time, but the camera was brand new then. I was able to play with the camera, pay my money, and walk out the door with it.

Recently, a white pixel started showing up intermittently, and I took it to the dealer on March 28th. A week or so later, I had an estimate, and I had the camera back on April 22nd. The camera was sent to JVC, and the dealer double-checked to see that the repair was done properly. They were always responsive and cooperative.

The bill was $181, and I am now pursuing the one year extended warranty because the camera was purchased on Master Card. I must provide paperwork to MC, and I should get reimbursed. We'll see!

So many companies are hard to deal with. Industrial Video is definitely an exception!

I go with a local dealer, too. I bought the extended warranty, so I should be good to go.

GR-HD1 Playback Problem
 

I recently bought this camcorder and am pretty satisfied with the
results. I shot one mini-DV tape in HD. It played back nicely on my
HDTV. The next day when I wanted to play it again, it wouldn't. Once it
said "Cannot decode audio or video". When I fast forwarded the tape I
could see the pictures, but it did not play. However, a newly shot tape
played back without any problem.

Then it happened to another tape on which I had recorded a few minutes
of experimental video. Trying to narrow down the problem I discovered
that when I stop the tape in the middle, take it out, and then put it
back, the tape somehow gets corrupted and does not play anymore.
Sometimes it happens the first time I put it back and sometimes I have
to repeat this couple times. It only happens in HD mode. I tried SD
mode and it worked perfectly every time.

If I leave some tape in the beginning (~30 sec) and then rewind the
tape every time before removing it from the camera, this problem does
not show up. I tried it about five times and the tape was still playing
good. This may be a recommended way of ejecting the tape, but it should
not be mandatory.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Can someone do this
experiment on his/her GR-HD1 camcorder? I would really appreciate any
help. If it does not happen with other cameras, then it must be my
unit. Otherwise it may be a design flaw and all GR-HD1 owners should
know about it before they lose something precious.

Sorry to hear of your problem. I've had an HD-10 for two years now, and have not seen anything like that. Have you tried capturing the video. It might capture OK, while not decoding properly in the camera.

Sometime back, I got a JVC D-VHS deck. I was surprised to find that I could make a firewire copy of a data stream recorded off the air (even 1080i) onto the HD-10. The camera screen gave a message indicating that it could not decode it, BUT it played back fine through the D-VHS deck's decoder, and could even be copied back to the D-VHS.

In short, you may be able to get a good firewire capture (or copy) even though the camera's decoder doesn't like it. If the camera is new, send it to JVC. If you have to pay for the repair - I guess that's a judgement call.

I appreciate your response. The capture also does not work. I don't have access to a D-VHS deck yet, but I will try it. I saw one more such issue reported a few months ago in this forum, but I don't if and how it was resolved.

It may be due to the tape quality. I was using TDK DVM60 tape I bought at Costco. When I use a Panasonic tape I am able to eject and replay it. I did it a few times and it has played fine so far. However, I still feel nervous about it.

The camera is new but it was not bought from an authorized dealer. So I don't know if JVC will honor the warranty. I will try it anyway.

It's in DV and small, but at least you can see what Jon Fordham and I did in December 2003. I cut it with the first Lumiere HD and Final Cut Pro 4 and 4.5. I chose Pixlet as the format to cut in FCP, and Apple told me I was the only person doing it. I never had a problem with it, either.
