I'll make some time on the weekend to answer all your questions in detail to the best of my ability.

Price

Any word on how much this will retail at in the UK? In your review you mention $7999 which I guess is probably going to be around £6k/£6.5k in the UK. Thats about the price of the Sony EX3 which has 1/2" chips. What are main selling points of the JVC that the EX3 doesn't have to give it a chance in this price bracket? Presumably a big aspect would be that 35mm lenses on the JVC will give more magnification than on the Sony?

Also CCD rather than CMOS. CMOS seems to be the reason why this spate of cameras have appeared with mind-blowing specs and low low prices - there is always a compromise somewhere in there.

Hand-held ergonomics stands out for me, and I think it may be more like £5,000 than £6,000 on the street. Also native SDHC card recording, and because no adaptor is involved, it seems possible to do full overcrank. Use FCP and it gives native Quicktime files.

I was initially skeptical, but after seeing Tims' footage, even the Engineering sample produced better looking footage than my HD 100. If street prices get it closer to the EX1, it becomes very very tempting. This, plus the PL Lens adapter, plus some matched s16mm primes, combined with the Flash XDR, wow.

Tim, thanks very much for taking the time. I may change my mind and come to NAB this year. Depends on new a job I'm starting.

I was told by JVC at the Broadcast Video Expo that they expect the HM700 with stock Fujinon 16x lens to sell at around £5,000 on the street; the list price for it with the Canon 16x lens is £6,300 so a bit less than that in the shops.

That does seem to contradict the information given on this forum about the stock lens being the Canon but the JVC people said there'd been a bit of chopping and changing in the last few weeks about this.

Regards
Dave

The deal with that is the availability of the Canon lens. JVC will offer one of the Fuji lenses as the bundled kit lens at first, up until the Canon lens begins delivery.

Shaun Roemich February 20th, 2009 05:38 PM

Chris, do we have an ANTICIPATED release date for the Canon lens yet?

Craig Yanagi February 20th, 2009 09:10 PM

We're looking for the Canon lens to become available in June.

Shaun Roemich February 20th, 2009 09:13 PM

WOW, right from "The Man" himself.

Thanks Craig. Any word on whether those of us with HD200's with stock lenses might be able to buy a body only HM700 and purchase the Canon separately later when it becomes available? I own 2 HD200's with 2 16x5.5's and I REALLY don't need another but I'm also interested in picking up a 700 soon after release.

Craig Yanagi February 20th, 2009 09:33 PM

We are working on a number of configurations for the GYHM700 to provide the best offerings possible. The offering in the Americas may differ from that in other global markets.

Shaun Roemich February 20th, 2009 09:38 PM

Again, appreciate it Craig. Looking forward to "playing" with the new "toy", whenever a configuration that works for me ships.

Joe Carney February 22nd, 2009 04:15 PM

Mr Yanagi, could you answer the question about HDSDI output? 10 bit 4:2:2 or 8? Not going to effect buying decision, but would like to know.

Thanks

Randy Johnson February 22nd, 2009 07:49 PM

How much is the body only? Will the GY-HD100 lenses work with it?

Chris Hurd February 22nd, 2009 08:30 PM

According to my notes, SDI output is 10-bit. Full compatibility with lenses between the HD and HM series. The HM700 will eventually be released as a body-only kit, but to my knowledge its price has not yet been established. If I got any of this wrong, I'm sure Craig will step in and correct me.
