Yes, I formatted in camera before and after formatting to exFAT on the computer. Formatting in camera didn't change the card format to exFAT so that's why I did it on a computer (OSX if you're wondering). According to B&H XAVC-S recording requires SDXC cards, so that's what I'll try next.

The GoPro formats it's own little modified exFat version to the card, that's why a computer exFat format will not work correctly and why you should not then cross use it in other devices.

Yes I know, that is why I wondered if the Sony needed to format in camera when set to XAVC-S too. It is always good to let the cameras format as they often place directories during the format for data base recovery etc.
