Capturing footage - jumbled picture!

I have an urgent problem. When trying to capture footage to my computer with my old TRV-33 and the supplied FireWire cable, the picture comes out jumbled out, describable as what you may see when fast-forwarding/rewinding the tape while playing on the camera. This problem does not exist when the camera is on the recording/camera mode and only when in VTR mode.

Does anyone have a solution?

edit: i might also add that this exists regardless of what software i use to capture

You'll probably want to run a head cleaning tape on your deck. Hopefully, the problem isn't on the tape from the camera needing a head cleaning.

Thanks I'll try that. For the meantime I have convinced myself to suffer bad quality by transferring via USB for now. Problem didn't seem to be on the tape as it did this for more than 1 tape and transferring via USB worked.
