I just want Quicktime...
 

Is there a way to install Quicktime, without having all the other stuff? How do I get rid of the QT icon in my system tray?

You can disable that in preferences.

Edit --> prefs --> QT prefs --> Browser plug-in --> uncheck QT system tray icon.

Quicktime's "qttask" still loads up in the background. Go to run --> msconfig (type it in, hit enter) --> startup --> uncheck qttask
Reboot.

Keep in mind QT player will make that startup again when you open the standalone quicktime player. You can kind of get around it by using "Quicktime Alternative" (do a google search).

I guess that is part of my problem Glenn, I don't have the option of turning off the icon. They USED to include it, but have apparently decided to do what they feel is in your best interest.

the qt icon will go away when you get rid of the qttask garbage, per glenn's post... but it'll all come back after you run the qt player again.

it's just another reason why i quit making qt web video many moons ago.

I love Quicktime's color saturation, hate the baggage. I absolutely refuse to even install Realplayer, because the garbage they load in, the spyware, etc. QT is tougher to kick, because I like the way it looks.

There is a version of RealPlayer made for the BBC that supposedly doesn't have the extra garbage. There is also a corporate version of RealPlayer that I've heard doesn't have the extra things.

As for myself, I use the regular RealPlayer and just disable the RealPlayer message center, and whatever I notice in the phone home preferences that I don't like.
